Rsyu
With it's Sunday number Exodus: gods and kings finishes it's opening week with 772,643 admissions and $6.2M gross. Noah managed 1,133,149 admissions and $8.1M gross so it's numbers aren't overly impressive. Word of mouth seems mixed too. While Korean people love films that have an epic feel the general consensus for exodus seems to be that the story isn't all the great. I don't expect this to have great legs. It's slipped behind Interstellar in presales so whether or not it can maintain it's position as top dog of the box office will depend on how much walk-up business it can generate. Interstellar started its fifth week of release with its daily admissions dropping below 100K admissions for the first time during it's run. It subsequently slipped to second in presales and saw it's dailies almost halved as Exodus took all it's IMAX screens. Since then it's recovered better than one would have expected, gradually gathering steam as it moved towards the weekend, culminating in a frankly stunning Saturday increase. This coincided with it reclaiming the top spot in presales and suddenly the possibilities of 10M admissions happening doesn't look as bleak as it did midweek. Several milestones were crossed this week. First and foremost, it crossed 9M admissions, beating Iron man 3 (in admissions as well as gross) in the process and all in a matter of 32 days. Frozen and Avatar both took 33 days to reach the same tally. It also became the 3rd most attended film of the year and 15th overall as well as becoming the 3rd most attended/grossing foreign release. In the following weeks it's likely to breach the $70M barrier and cement it's place in the top 10 highest grossing movies in both dollars and Korean won. Big match in its second week decreased by 32.3% compared to its OW. It's currently the strongest playing local film but that isn't saying much. It will finish above 1 million admissions for certain but fail to go above 1.5 million admissions. Local films will remain week until the 17th when ode to my father opens Don't cross that river my love overcame its average opening week and showing some great increases in it's second outing. Basically it's a documentary independent film about two old folk who are still in love despite their years, and readying themselves for their inevitable death and parting. It's playing great among the elderly from what I hear. Fury also experienced harsh drops with most of the audience flocking to see either Exodus or Interstellar over it. Admissions for its third week did less than half of what it did last week which is surprising since word of mouth seemed to be decent. Finishing with over 1.5 million admissions is touch and go at this point requiring some good drops from here on out to leg it over. Next week top 5 predictions: 1. Exodus: gods and kings 2. Interstellar 3. Theory of everything 4. Love, Rosie 5. My love don't cross that river Edited December 8, 2014 by Rsyu

James
Yeah, I was just going to ask that. Considering the date change and all, do you think this will top TH1's 21M? Can we expect more than that? 30M maybe?

Rsyu
are those presales good for BOTFA? Btw: what can we expect for BOTFA? Yeah, I was just going to ask that. Considering the date change and all, do you think this will top TH1's 21M? Can we expect more than that? 30M maybe? Presales for TH3 are decent for now but nothing special like Interstellar which topped the presales chart 19 days before it's release. It needs to show some rapid increases soon hopefully before the weekend. AUJ-$21M DoS-$16M WB had some contract issues with one of the major multiplex chains during Desolation of Smaug's release causing it to lose a lot of screens. So the decrease from AUJ isn't entirely down to a loss in popularity although that probably was a factor too. DoS also had the misfortune of 10M admissions hit film The Attorney arriving it's second week. AUJ suffered from competition in the shape of Les Mis, Life of pie and Tower (local film) releasing in subsequent weeks. TBOTFA faces ode to my father (released on the same day), Criminal designer (12/24), Sangeuiwon (12/24) and Taken 3 (1/1) during the early stages of it's run. To gross $30M TBOTFA would need to show some significantly better legs against competition compared to previous films. The LotR series was beloved by many here and WB are clearly using that in its advertisements but I'm not confident that it is enough to get people to see TH3 and it doesn't really have the feel of an event film. Guessing $24-27M for now.

Rsyu
True, beating Frozen looks unlikely but it might yet scrape by 10 million admissions. It was an insane run in any case, the best any film has done in Korea without holiday legs.

Rsyu
So 70M is locked. How hight can Interstellar go? 75M? Also, is that presales number good for TH? I think $71-$72 million finish, maybe $73M tops. I would be surprised if it does much business beyond the 17th. The Hobbit's presales are strange. They rose by 17K on monday and only by 6K on Tuesday. Regardless, the majority of it's increases should happen at the end of the weekend and it's out-muscling ode to my father in presales too which is a positive sign.
Rsyu
Yearly admissions for Foreign releases: 101,023,260 (51.3%) Yearly admissions for Local releases: 95,715,672 (48.7%) 2014 was pretty crazy. Foreign releases has a great chance of finishing the year with higher admissions than local films for the first time since 2010. Hardly surprising when you consider that just Interstellar+Frozen alone is bigger than Roaring currents.
