Rsyu
Kundo: age of the rampant crossed 2 million admissions today (time-July 26th 4:09 pm: KOBIS) on the fourth of it's release making it the fastest film to reach that mark this calendar year. This is a day faster than Transformers: Age of extinction which took 5 days to reach the same mark.
Rsyu
Opening weekend (friday-sunday) for HTTYD was $6,460,346 in gross and 791,938 admissions. HTTYD2 OW is currently $3.548 million gross and 430,985 admissions with sunday numbers to come. I'm not seeing a big difference between the respective opening weekends of HTTYD2 and HTTD though.

yjs
Strong numbers for Dragon 2 I guess. It's not stronger than former animated hits like KFP 1, 2 or Frozen but those were the exceptions and it's doing nicely facing such a huge competition. Actually that 870K daily admission from Kundo is just a MONSTER so Dragon 2's 300K number seems a little surprising too me, even. It will end somewhere similar to the first film (about 2.5M-3M admissions I'm thinking.), which was already a modest hit (No. 15 of 2010 and 7th all-time biggest animation) in Korea where animated films are not nearly big as other territories with similar market size.
Rsyu
I was kind of hoping the success of frozen would lead to a wider acceptance of animated films in Korea but so far, looking at the poor perfomance of animated films in general this year, it looks like frozen was a one off anomaly. I just went over the seat saturation for HTTYD2 since it's OD and it looks like this 7/23: 14.6% (rank 20) 7/24: 18.0% (rank 18) 7/25: 23.8% (rank 12) 7/26: 52.1% (rank 6) You could argue that the saturation is increasing and the weekend is half-decent but the OD seat saturation especially is just poor. I could see that just from the amount of people in my viewing, just 1/10 full during prime time on opening day. It's continuously lagging behind Dawn of the planet of the apes in this area too. Kundo was a decisive factor yes, but I also think that interest wasn't all that high to begin with.

Rsyu
Roaring Currents (명량) (D-1) Plot: The film revolves around the titular Battle of Myeongnyang circa 1597, regarded as one of legendary Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin's most remarkable naval victories, in which he led the only 12 ships remaining in his command to a heroic victory against an invading Japanese fleet numbering 330 vessels Battle of Myeongnyang? In the Battle of Myeongnyang, on October 26, 1597, the Joseon Admiral Yi Sun-sin fought the Japanese navy in the Myeongnyang Strait, near Jindo Island, off the southwest point of the Korean peninsula. With 12 ships remaining from Won Gyun’s disastrous defeat at the Battle of Chilchonryang, Admiral Yi held the strait against a fleet of 133 Japanese warships and at least 200 logistical support ships. Many Japanese warships were sunk or disabled during the battle and the Japanese were forced to retreat. Given the disparity in numbers, the battle is regarded as one of Admiral Yi’s most remarkable victories. It has a great platform from which to build on, Admiral Yi Sun-sin being a pivotal and significant figure in South Korean history. Also given the recent souring of relations between South Korea and Japan over various political issues, watching one of the most famous victories in Korean history is likely to be popular choice. Potential stumbling blocks could be the general quality of the film. The general consensus among movie reviewers seems to be that there is too much focus on the battle and not enough on character building. Using Yi sun-shin could turn out to be a double edged sword in this respect in that there could be a backlash if the quality of the movie doesn't live up to expectations. Rsyu
Bad word of mouth for Kundo is already beginning to show in presales, with it lagging behind how to train your dragon 2 by a significant amount. Walk up business remains the difference at the moment with Kundo still dominating screens and showtimes even though HTTYD2 has a higher seat saturation. It'll be interesting to see how Roaring currents (tomorrow) and GotG (07/31) affects this balance.
