POTUS 2020
4 minutes ago, Barnack said: That seem completely in contradiction, if a year with a lot of great films doesn't make much more than a year with a lot of bad tentpoles, that seem to show how important marketing spending is, much more than good film or not. The tentpoles usually have their own built in audiences. My point was that they spend $100m+ on P&A for most of them. Some years there are a lot of $300mDom/1bWW÷ movies, other years far less but the years arent far a part in total BO The audiience will just go see the non tentpoles instead. In other words its a near zero sum game. If they cut their PA in half domestic would still do $11b and China would still do $8b Because they will go to the movies once a week, month or year regardless. The studios would save a couple billion.

Dont know whats wrong with this one.. is it a buy out movie? On 10/25/2019 at 10:26 PM, efialtes76 said: No, Tencent is one of the producers. No, not a buyout. Similar case to Maleficent 2 that the release notice issues only a few days before opening. A Marvel Fanboy
18 hours ago, MrGlass2 said: But why forbid marketing if the movie does get a release? They could just have kept the ban. There you get to the part of how the typical mind of a Chinese government agency works. In their logic, you can do it, but you can't say it;And vice versa, you can say it but you cannot do it. Oftenly seen in China, if your movie/show is banned, you must say that the release is canceled because of technical problems—you absolutely cannot say it is banned. Similarly, your site is not blocked by China even if it is actually blocked—the Chinese government never admits such a thing. Your movie eventually has passed the censorship but the Film Bureau told you to keep low profile in marketing then you ought to be low profile. In this way, you know that you bear sins and should be thankful to the government. The governing laws work similarly in every industry in China. A Marvel Fanboy
17 hours ago, Gavin Feng said: I think no connection between Better Days & Once Upon a Time in HLW. The dismissal of Once Upon a Time in HLW is totally a accident. Better Days was supposed to get the date last week. The announcement on Tue is very crazy because most distributors couldn't even send their copies to theaters across the country in such a limited period of time. I heard Film Bureau actually have no problem with the Bruce Lee scenes. The only reason it was dismissed is Lee's daughter, a American citizen, talked with them. So the release of Once Upon a Time in HLW suddenly become something unacceptable because keeping releasing it would hurt the friendship between Chinese and American in a sensitive time(those leaders are negotiating for a deal on stopping trade war). If Shannon Lee is a Chinese citizen, Film Bureau wouldn't give a shit about her complaint. I dont think so my buddy. Better Days was always granted release after censorship. All it needed was a window to land quietly (with very little marketing) though. With OUaTiH gone, Oct 25 suddenly became an empty spot thus the film Bureau felt it necessary for Better Days to fill the slot. OUaTiH was canceled release, not because friendship between China and the US must be looked after, but because of the complaint of Bruce Lee's daughter. Otherwisely, releasing OUaTiH normally, making the studio happy would be more helpful to the China-US friendship. The film Bureau listened to Shannon Lee because she is the daughter of Bruce Lee who himself is always seen as a figure invincible, a legend shall not be defamed in the eyes of many Chinese. And Chinese government loves mythmaking even more than the people do. So I think the ban of OUaTiH is simply the result of a second-thought after Bruce Lee's daughter complained, to preserve Bruce lee's image.
