jiangsen
BoxOffice.com Weekend Actuals Jurassic World is winding down its China run, but held strong with $9.41 million (-40%) from ~47,000 screenings on its fourth and final weekend. That brings the total for Universal's global blockbuster to $221.7 million and places Jurassic as the fourth highest grossing film of all-time in China behind Avengers: Age of Ultron ($235M), Transformers 4 ($319M), and Furious 7 ($390M). Despite the great hold, Jurassic's 30-day imported film license will expire on Thursday, preventing it from passing Ultron. Universal must be disappointed that the run will be cut short with gas still left in the tank and one can only imagine how much longer Hollywood studios will put up with this treatment.

jiangsen
BoxOffice.com Weekly Preview According to EntGroup's EFMT Index for this weekend's new releases, box office expectations are highest for Tiny Times 4.0 (小时代4:灵魂尽头), the final chapter in novelist/screenwriter/director Guo Jingming's Tiny Times series. Despite heavy criticism condemning the young protagonists as materialistic and vain, the Tiny Times series has proven very popular with the Post-90s female demographic, grossing a combined $211 million since summer 2013. Last summer's third installment alone grossed ($84.77 million) and we think this fourth and final film will bring out even more young fans (and the boyfriends they drag along). Aimed at a similar demographic and receiving just as much buzz as Tiny Times is the youthful romance pic Forever Young (栀子花开2015) based on a hit song by He Jiong (何炅) from 2004. He Jiong, the congenial host of China's hippest variety show Happy Camp, also takes the reins as first time director, and producers are hoping his rabid fans will come out to support the film. Weekend predictions: Tiny Times 4.0 - $35M, Forever Young - $18M, Monkey King: Hero is Back - $15M, Monk Comes Down The Mountain - $8M, I Am Somebody - $2.5M Edited July 7, 2015 by jiangsen

I can imagine, 2017 Things that hopefully could happen when China and Hollywood sit down for the next round of negotiation supposedly in 2017: Annual quota expands to a higher number like 50 than the current 34. It seems impossible for the quota system to become fully invalid in the foreseeable future. Although, even if it does, SARFT can always easily come up with more tricks to limit the total number of imports screened, like strengthening the censorship. In fact, if there is not no limit to the number of the quota, Hollywood may find even less than 34 imports screened, as SARFT could always say to Hollywood, "look, we are open to release a broad cross-section of international pictures but many of the films you submit simply don't meet our standards of censorship.” So, if Hollywood is smart enough, they should put up with an exact number of quota like 50 or 100, instead of can we get rid of the quota system ? Hollywood's revenue-sharing taking raises to a higher number like 30% than the current 25%. Name a third company as the authorized distributor of imported revenue-sharing films after CFGC and Hua Xia. Contenders include Wu Zhou 五洲 (Wanda) and Si Hai 四海 that's recently put up by SFG with four other state running theater chains. But some say this situation won't change. Make the co-producing and co-operating items more favorable to foreign studios. Lift the rule of one month run. It seems impossible to name a second authorized importer after CFGC. Btw, good opening for Monk but it's soon going to be destroyed by Tiny Times 4. Edited July 7, 2015 by firedeep

keysersoze123
I think JW will drop hard today as TT has taken away most of its showtimes. I would say 1415m yuan finish. Based on today's ER that is around $228m.

A Marvel Fanboy
If we define an A-list Chinese movie star as the following: has had at least one 100m+ grossing film at the Chinese box office that sold on his/her name or saw him/her star in leading role in the last three years (since 2012) has had at least three 100m+ grossing films at the Chinese box office in total to date has been starring in movies for at least five years Then we end up with the following list: A-list Chinese Movie Stars Actor Age Actress Age Wang Xueqi 王学圻 69 Carina Lau 刘嘉玲 50 Jackie Chan 成龙 61 Sammi Cheng 郑秀文 43 Chou Yun-fat 周润发 60 Li Bingbing 李冰冰 42 Chen Daoming 陈道明 60 Xu Jinglei 徐静蕾 41 Ge You 葛优 58 Zhou Xun 周迅 41 Tony Leung 梁家辉 57 Lin Chi-ling 林志玲 41 Andy Lau 刘德华 54 Zhao Wei 赵薇 39 Tony Leung Chiu Wai 梁朝伟 53 Shu Qi 舒淇 39 Jet Li 李连杰 52 Yao Chen 姚晨 36 Donnie Yen 甄子丹 52 Gao Yuanyuan 高圆圆 36 Jiang Wen 姜文 52 Tang Wei 汤唯 36 Zhang Hanyu 张涵予 51 Zhang Ziyi 章子怡 36 Ching Wan Lau 刘青云 51 Fan Bingbing 范冰冰 34 Aaron Kwok 郭富城 50 Bai Baihe 白百合 31 Nick Cheung 张家辉 48 Yang Mi 杨幂 29 Louis Koo 古天乐 45 Liu Yifei 刘亦菲 28 Sun Honglei 孙红雷 45 Ni Ni 倪妮 27 Xu Zheng 徐峥 43 Angelababy 杨颖 26 Huang Bo 黄渤 41 Jacky Wu 吴京 41 Daniel Wu 吴彦祖 41 Chen Kun 陈坤 39 Leehom Wang 王力宏 39 Huang Xiaoming 黄晓明 38 Liu Ye 刘烨 37 William Feng 冯绍峰 37 Deng Chao 邓超 36 Tong Dawei 佟大为 36 Nicholas Tse 谢霆锋 35 Shawn Yue 余文乐 34 Eddie Peng 彭于晏 33 Mark Zhao 赵又廷 31 Wen Zhang 文章 31 Wang Baoqiang 王宝强 31 Kenny Lin 林更新 27 These are all we have as A-list Chinese movie stars: 35 actors and 18 actresses. However, this year nearly 60 Chinese homegrown films are expected to cross the magic 100m mark. And the number will soon surpass 100 within three years. Let's be conservative, say one major release boast two A-list stars on average, meaning China will soon need more than 200 A-list movie stars, also meaning an A-list movie star has to headline 3~4 movies each year ... in other words, A-list movie stars are in very short supply in China, especially considering the age of many A-list actors/actresses on the list. This is causing: Chinese movie star salaries skyrocketing (along with the market quickly expanding) Rushed film productions and low-quality acting performance Celebrity obsessed China desperately needs to produce dozens of new A-list movie stars in the next few years
A Marvel Fanboy
Meanwhile in Hollywood, one like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt continuing producing movies at a rate of one title per year would be considered very hard working. Edited July 9, 2015 by firedeep
POTUS 2020
Hollywood stars used to put out 3-4 films a year in the 30s and 40s. A lot of them were B movies, quickly shot and poorly produced, but the tickets were selling cause it was the only game in town. Then TV came along and the quality had to go up. Pitt or Cruise can spend months preparing for a role, 3 or more months to shoot and then post production. So yes 1 per year is about what it takes to get it done right. I enjoy a lot of foreign films but the voices, sound and lighting can often be off. I understand they have much smaller budgets but sometimes quickly rolling them out can cause poor quality and a bad reaction from audiences. christian bale, amazing physical transformations for the fighter and then American hustle, had to take 6 months for those opposite physiques, then there is the accents to learn that were authentic and yet coming from a british actor. quality over quantity Tiny times will break 100m today, maybe 110. May beat JW OD, will it hold up OW and beat JW OW or be front loaded? JW will close very close to $228m, depending upon precise XR Monk getting hit 40% from yesterday

A lot of young TV actors are also transitioning to become lead film actors like Li Yifeng (Forever Young), Tang Yan (The Three Body Problem), Yang Yang (The Left Ear) and several others. Not to mention China's current craze for fresh meats and idols becoming film actors too like Kris Wu (Somewhere Only We Know, Fading Wave, So Young 2, Guo Jingming's L.O.R.D.), Lu Han (20 Once Again, I Am A Witness, Great Wall). Unknowns like Lin Yun (Stephen Chow's Mermaid, L.O.R.D) are also being pushed right now. I don't think it's going to be a problem since China itself is ready for the young generation to take over in films.
