Ok but when you factor in 30 vs 60 days plus the fudge, FF7 comes out on top. FF7 with 60 days probably makes 410-415M instead 391M.

Not really, FF7 last day was AOU opening, already down to 1M yuan daily, probably making another $2-3M tops if it was extended.

FF7 had monster opneing and held really well due to weak competitions and great WOM.

MH had big opening and big competitions but had great legs thanks to summer holidays.

It had no Hollywood movies to take screens away plus most movies flopped. At least week after week movies flopped only ones to do anything was TMK and JBM.

Wed 12 -13.9% -51.8% 2347 379
Thu 10 -11.9% -66.9% 2358 381
Fri 14 31.7% -79.7% 2371 383
Sat 24 71.5% -65.1% 2395 387
Sun 20 -15.3% -55.8% 2415 390
Mon 8 -59.8% -48.1% 2423 391
Tue 1.5 -81.3% -89.1% 2424 391

I beg to differ, different treatment. FF7 was still making good money in its final days. on the last day when AOU opened, shows were cut from 16% to 3%. MH's shows were slowly cut from 20% at the end of 30 days to 17, 11, 8, 6% then 3% over 4 weeks

FF7 easily makes $10-15m more given 2 more weeks and proper show count.

Congratulations to Monster Hunt. At least the crown finally returned to a domestic film (rare in these Hollywood-dominated times). As for FF7 fans, just accept it. Comparison is not apples-to-apples but who will care 2 years from now? Apart from a few on this blog, no one.

in the end none of this shit really matters, a billion people don't have enough to eat on a daily basis, that matters,  lets stop posting and shut the forum down. stop wasting money on going to see the same movie 5 times and buy a brother a loaf of bread B)

I don't know about Mermaid's potential but maybe people in China are overblowing their expectations for that to be huge.... The WOM on that could be good....or it could be bad.

Many people expect this to be the next "Monster Hunt"...in terms of local movies. Reasonable maybe...but not very doable, though.

Frozen was around the middle at $1 = 100 yen so it didn't get screwed but it didn't benefit from a high yen either. Still, It grossed less than Spirited Away in yen but more in dollars so it's hard to say it got screwed.

I just looked at the exchange rate for Japan while Toy Story 3 was being shown there.

Yep, Frozen got screwed.

It's directed by Stephen Chou. How can it be bad ... he debuted three films in Mainland since, ranking #1 (2004), #4 (2008, CJ7 is a kids flick) and #1 (2013), even a better track record than Zhang Yimou. In China, in terms of box office, no other director does better him except Bayformers (on par) and James Cameron.
