Strong increases for Zootopia, The Bodyguard and Kung Fu Panda 3. Very weak increase for Batman v Superman. Good for The Mobfathers. Decent for Heaven in the Dark. Good for Eddie the Eagle.

2 PM update: Zootopia is really hopping away from Batman v Superman now. Up 8,000+ in admissions and we haven't hit the 3-5 PM sweet spot yet. Zootopia has also been edging away from Batman at night the last few days but today is a different case because today will benefit Batman v Superman more with the holiday Monday to come tomorrow. I think the weekend is too close to call right now. Need to see how tonight goes before declaring a winner.

Batman v Superman secures the #7 OW of all time. Zootopia did really well. Kung Fu Panda 3 did not do that great. It only increased 23% despite the 7-day 2nd week vs. 4 day 1st week and the holidays. Rest of the holdovers was clobbered by the top 2. Heaven in the Dark opened tepidly.

Great hold for Zootopia. Batman v Superman and The Mobfathers barely increased. Batman v Superman had the 2nd worst hold of the top 10. The Bodyguard did well. Excellent increase for Kung Fu Panda 3 but that is still a disaster for this weekend. It still had the weakest hold of the top 10 on Sunday.

It really came down to the wire today but Batman might have just pipped Zootopia at the finish line. Batman only had 80% of Zootopia's admissions this weekend and still came out ahead. That this weekend turned out to be this close is a massive underachievement for Batman v Superman. It is extremely lucky it got high ticket prices and IMAX to soften the blow. 7m will be cleared on Monday and then 8m should happen in about 2 weeks time. Zootopia poured it on in the latter stages of this weekend but it simply could not keep up with BvS's prices. Nevertheless, it enters the 4m ranks today and 5m should happen at the end of next weekend. The Bodyguard opened really well while The Mobfathers did not gain much traction with a higher profile Chinese movie opening a day later. Kung Fu Panda 3 squandered this weekend and it will finish in the 3.5-4m range.

Another strong day for Zootopia. Awful decrease for Batman v Superman. Under 20,000 admissions on a 2nd weekend holiday...yikes. The gap between Batman and Bodyguard has shrunk from 7,000+ on Saturday to less than 1,000 on Monday. Kung Fu Panda 3 had one of the best increases on Monday but even that was not enough to push it below 50% from last Monday. The Mobfathers had the only other decrease on Monday and it's clear that moviegoers are turning toward The Bodyguard instead.

What do you think of the controversy over the Hong Kong film awards this year?

Many very weird choices, something wrong with the jury. The 2 most evident one are Best Picture and Best Action Choreography, lol.
How did 10 years win Best Picture? So many other better contenders.
How did Ip Man 3 NOT win Best Action Choreography with that Elevator fight scene and Tyson fight scene, SPL2's actions were even weaker than the 2006's SPL and SPL2's action are so messy.

There is something very wrong with the credibility of HK film awards now IMO.

PS: Mad Max Fury Road is out this Friday? Is it a re-release?

10 Years won Best Picture for being political. It was to send a message to Beijing obviously for not televising the ceremony and possibly due to Ip Man 3's box office scandal. By awarding the film to 10 Years, they are not celebrating film but speaking out against supposed injustices against being ruled under China.

Keep in mind, 10 Years was not nominated in any other category except for Best Film. All the usual awards that goes along with a Best Film were not nominated including Director, Screenplay, Actor/Actress, Cinematography therefore they had none of the components that make up a great film.

Stupid. This move will set back HK industry for years. We should expect some backlash from this with severe punishment from China possible. Cold War 2 might be affected now.

Wow, Kung Fu Panda 3 is gone from the top 10 in only 3 weeks. That looks pretty bad for Batman. IMAX is likely skewing the admissions a lot. Terrible for Huntsman. I think it did worse than the first one's opening day pre-sales. Of course, that debuted in the summer but right now, box office is kind of dead so Huntsman could have taken advantage. That's not a bad hold for Zootopia once you know that kids went back to school this week unlike last Thursday. Awful for Trivisa. Meh for The Bodyguard and bleh for the rest of the top 10.

Unless if Batman v Superman has a sudden resurgence or Huntsman sees a big explosion of admissions soon, Zootopia is going to win this weekend.

Don't think it will affect Cold War 2 much to be honest. Because Aaron Kwok won best actor (There is also controversy on this on weibo though), but I think the negative effects caused by giving Ten Years the Best Film award, is negated by the positive effect of Kwok winning Best Actor, so Cold War 2 is safe.

But HK Film awards is totally rigged, really brought the entire HK film industry backwards. Very disappointed with the jury.

Since I had not watched the film itself, I have no right to judge whether Ten Years should be awarded or not.

But I believe if only political reason affect this result, that looked more like controversy between Zero Dark Thirty and Argo in Academy Awards. Or better saying, rigging controversy or are not limited to Hong Kong (or certain extent, China) but all over the World.

I did agree the nomination should be revised, but not necessary to alter the result unless there are more politically controversal film flooding the scene.

It has nothing to do with Aaron Kwok winning best actor but that Cold War is a HK film and they could realistically sabotage Cold War's box office in a number of ways: set release date very late, put massive competition on opening weekend, scrutinize hard for any box office fudging, etc.

Slow day overall. Huntsmen carried the day with increasing admissions at night. Sad opening day for Trivisa. It only did slightly better in admissions than Mobfathers' opening day last week. Batman v Superman/Zootopia both seem to be heading in one direction but one has the upper hand on the other. Zootopia's drop will likely be smaller in gross while Batman's drop will be larger with IMAX admissions inflating it right now. Zootopia also has the disadvantage of seeing children return to school this week. That should make for a strong Friday/Saturday hold and then a deflated Sunday hold with last Sunday being inflated by the holiday Monday. Batman just seems lost with no respite in sight. Iffy hold for The Bodyguard but maybe with Thursday added in this week, it can escape a drop above 50%. Terrible for The Mobfathers. I really don't understand why all 3 (Trivisa/Bodyguard/Mobfathers) decided to release these past 2 weeks. The competition is stiff enough with Hollywood entries and then you add in all the same genre local flair and you're just cutting into your own box office potential. Eddie the Eagle had a decent hold.

-- 5 The Bodyguard -- $42,610 -- -- 7 $823,801
Notes on the above:
1. Huntsman: Winter's War - 9,100+ admits; avg 40 per showing
2. Trivisa - 7,000+ admits; avg 37 per showing
3. Zootopia - 6,400+ admits; avg 36 per showing
4. The Bodyguard - 4,200+ admits; avg 29 per showing
5. Batman v Superman - 4,000+ admits; avg 20 per showing

The change from those admissions above and the ones posted yesterday show a big spread within the top 5. Huntsman is over 2,000 admissions up on 2nd place Trivisa while The Bodyguard overtook Batman v Superman in admissions for the day.

Decent for Huntsman though it should just miss the 1st one's OW. Trivisa opened 2% off The Mobfathers' OD. Not a good hold for Zootopia but it's understandable with kids returning to school. Batman v Superman's drop is no excuse, however, and shows how badly it has performed for it to lose to Zootopia on its 3rd Thursday with Zootopia hindered by kids going to school. The Bodyguard is doing alright so far. It will get to 1m by this weekend.

It is coming out during the protection period, and most chinese films know to avoid a head on collision with CW2, so I am sure it is quite safe.
I hope the quality is good though, i mean most films start to deteriorate in quality when other A List Stars are added.... when Box Office becomes more important than Quality, it is very worrying..

Actually  foreign movies can't change their release dated once settled, local movie(inlcuding HK movies) can shift their dates as often as they want.

Didn't know they include HK movies as local but they can still do some damage to its box office by manipulating its surroundings.

Not bad for Huntsman. Zootopia though is doing everything it can to come back this weekend. Very good daily increase. Very weak increases for the rest of the top 5 and The Bodyguard. Port of Call reenters the top 10 on the basis of theaters adding showtimes due to its strong showing at the HK Film Awards.

Incredible hold for Zootopia. Decent for Huntsman. Weak increase for Batman. Batman's hold is not all that great either. Good for Trivisa. Excellent spike for Port of Call.

I know this seems like a dumb question but does the LW and TW mean, "last week" and "this week" respectively?  And thanks for the daily updates, LOVE seeing your write ups and amazing effort and dedication to keeping this thread polished and one of the best on the website! :D <3

Yes, that is right. If you see LW and TW together with a day of the week, it means last __day and this ___day. If you see TW together with weekend estimates, it means 4-day weekend estimates from this weekend. Thank you.

Zootopia increased its lead on Huntsman during the day today and that will prove to be very important in deciding in who wins this weekend. The Huntsman didn't do too badly. Not bad of an increase for Trivisa. Batman is doing horribly. Not good for The Bodyguard. Port of Call is doing very well. Eddie the Eagle had a great hold. Poor from Kung Fu Panda 3.

1 Zootopia $690,000 -42.0% $5,245,000
2 The Huntsman: Winter's War $650,000   $650,000
3 Trivisa $415,000   $415,000
4 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice $320,000 -74.8% $7,675,000
5 The Bodyguard $235,000 -49.7% $1,015,000
Zootopia backed into #1 on its 3rd weekend based on the strength of its word of mouth and the weakness of others around it. Every other movie in the top 5 is almost a full point back of Zootopia's rating despite user scores going down the more days it is out and Zootopia being the longest or tying the longest running film in the top 5. Zootopia is slowing down but it will get to 6m, doubling its nearest Easter animated competitor, The Croods, and tripling any other Easter animated release. Keep in mind that The Croods was released day-and-date while Zootopia was delayed for nearly 2 months from its earliest international release and released against Batman v Superman, diluting its ultimate box office potential. For a medium sized market like Hong Kong, it is near suicide to release against a huge moneymaker on opening weekend because most theaters only have 6 screens and they usually play superhero tentpoles on 4-5 screens but Zootopia defied all the odds. I'd say for a bigger market like the UK, this is not as much of an issue because they are able to accommodate more films with multiplexes but in HK where space is limited, this is a much bigger problem, one that does not get any attention.

The Huntsman: Winter's War played very well this weekend but could not hold on for the win. Of course 3D helped but most theaters did not even bother showing this in 3D anyway but at least it will see a slight bump from the first one's OW. User rating is only a 3.7/5 but its opening is a success.

Trivisa did alright. Like The Bodyguard/Mobfathers, there isn't really much to separate them. It might be a studio success but it's not that big local hit like Ip Man 3 or Cold War was.

Batman v Superman crashed on its 3rd weekend. As movies start winding down in IMAX, the ratio between admissions:gross is much smaller than normal because of phantom seats added to its admissions total. The smaller ratio levels out the high ratios we see on opening weekend for tentpoles. For example, Batman's Thursday admissions number included 32% of phantom seats from IMAX alone. Although it fell even more this weekend than its 2nd weekend, its 2nd weekend is actually worse when you inspect it more closely. Its 2nd weekend had a Sunday that was inflated by a Monday holiday, exactly the same that it had on opening weekend while this week has no holiday which means a deflated hold. Even with all the doom and gloom, it still managed to sludge past Deadpool, Captain America 2, Inception and The Dark Knight's totals this weekend. 60m HK will occur soon and 8m is happening. 8.1-8.2m seems to be where it's headed.

The Bodyguard passed 1m. Its weekend hold looks better than it appears due to it opening on Friday last weekend. Its 3-day Friday-Sunday is down close to 60%.

Strong increase for Zootopia. It has systematically increased its lead on Huntsman the past 2 days. Not bad for Huntsman. Terrible for Batman. Incredible increase for Port of Call.

Zootopia crushed the field on Sunday. With Huntsman 2 dropping on Sunday, it really opened a nice gap between the two. Not great for Huntsman 2, Trivisa, Batman or The Bodyguard. Port of Call and Kung Fu Panda 3 enjoyed very nice increases on Sunday. Awful for The Mobfathers. Excellent hold for Eddie the Eagle.

Zootopia's Sunday buffer wiped out Huntsman 2's 2-day advantage from Thursday and Friday. There were some minor changes for the top 3 from projections.

There will be no updates on Monday or Tuesday.
