RED SPARROW | 03.02.18 | Fox | Jennifer Lawrence
Incarnadine replied to kayumanggi's topic in Box Office Discussion
I saw the trailer in front of Kingsman last night, not great or terrible, although JLaw looked really good in a couple of the outfits. When I saw the trailer I had the feeling I had seen something very similar before, but I couldn't think of it until it came to me this morning. There was a TV movie in 1985 called "Secret Weapons" starring Linda Hamilton and also Geena Davis. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089983/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_1 I also couldn't help but think of "The Americans", like how Keri Russell's character would have been 15-20 years earlier. -

The Croods: A New Age | Nov 25, 2020 | RIP Cloris Leachman
Incarnadine replied to CJohn's topic in Box Office Discussion
I was very surprised when it was cancelled, much less surprised that it has been revived. As mentioned, the original was a surprise huge hit at nearly $600m WW and it's 2 stars are both riding career highs in success and popularity at the moment. If the original had a sequel clause in it they might be getting Emma and Ryan for much less than their current asking prices. -
So, IT opening day estimate of 48-49M is maybe enough to beat the September OW of $48,464,322 (Hotel Transylvania 2) and almost enough to beat the OW record for horror of $52,568,183 (Paranormal Activity 3). 🤡 Excellent movie, the casting was perfect. It'll be interesting to see which of those kids might become big in the future.

Theater bans Gone With The Wind for being "Insensitive"
Incarnadine replied to Incarnadine's topic in The Speakeasy
The decision to pull the movie was almost certainly due to online complaints rather than a strictly business decision. The movie obviously sold tickets and made the theater money as this theater has had 1 or more showings of GWTW every year for the last 34 years and had already announced it was on the schedule again before this kerfuffle started and they caved to the online outrage and pulled it. If the local ticket buying community had been "outraged" by the movie I doubt it would have played there so long as ticket sales would have suffered. I suspect most people never gave it a second thought or felt the need to complain about it in person, but once you can complain about something from the comfort of your own phone, and often anonymously, people suddenly become outraged and emboldened about pretty much anything. Interestingly, I just saw the most recent showing at this theater was Aug. 11. Presumably there were either few or no complaints before that showing as they scheduled another showing. I wonder what suddenly changed? -
Theater bans Gone With The Wind for being "Insensitive"
Incarnadine replied to Incarnadine's topic in The Speakeasy
Wow. When I started this thread I honestly thought there would be maybe 1 or 2 pages of discussion about censorship and where things are headed once you start. Personally, I'm not particularly fond of GWTW, but not for most of the reasons being touched on in this thread, rather it was simply before my time and doesn't really resonate with me, which is true of a lot of older movies. Still, much like controversial books that have been banned like Huckleberry Finn or Catcher In The Rye, which I pretty much have the same feelings as GWTW and for similar reasons, I can recognize them as classics from a different era, which shouldn't be entirely judged by today's mores and standards. Once you start censoring past works because they don't conform to modern sensitivities all you will end up with is the blandest non-controversial lowest common denominator "entertainment". -
http://deadline.com/2017/08/gone-with-the-wind-racism-memphis-tennessee-orpheum-theatre-hattie-mcdaniel-vivien-leigh-charlottesville-1202156922/ The world gets crazier and crazier. The article doesn't mention that the theater has had screenings for GWTW for the last 34 years, sometimes more than 1, with no problems, but suddenly they get some people throwing a fit on their Facebook page and it's time to ban a classic. I have to wonder how many complaints they got from local movie goers, the people who might actually patronize the establishment, as opposed to random online users who could be from anywhere and in all likelihood would probably never come within 100 miles of the theater. The term "slippery slope" comes to mind. I believe we are well down the slope now and still picking up speed.

I got my ticket for Friday Sept. 8 at 7:30 pm. It's filling up surprisingly fast and looking at the seats sold it looks like people are buying in groups, but considering it's mostly the prime seats sold so far it could just be couples and small groups taking the good seats early. I would have loved to go see the Thursday preview instead, but I get up early for work and I'd be lucky if I got home by 11 pm.

Leap! | Eric Summer & Éric Warin | August 25, 2017
Incarnadine replied to Blankments's topic in Box Office Discussion
This still hasn't been released in the U.S. yet? I vaguely remember it was released here in Canada quite a while ago with the title Ballerina. Also, is the U.S. the only country to keep the title "Leap"? I recall most countries had changed it to Ballerina. -
From August 25th to August 31 all movies at all Cineplex Odeon theaters will be at the Disount Tuesday prices. Considering there are no new movies of note coming out this week I guess they are trying to get butts in seats. I might go and see a few movies again like Wonder Woman or Spider-Man and maybe something like Ingrid Goes West that I couldn't bring myself to pay full price for.

Well, damn. Here I thought we were getting the long awaited American Maid spin off from The Tick.

For Canadians: Cineplex 30 days of summer
Incarnadine replied to Incarnadine's topic in Box Office Discussion
Cineplex finally has some info up. It runs until Sept. 15 and they will announce the next round of movies weekly so there isn't a full list for the entire promotion. https://www.cineplex.com/30days
