  1. The Scary Movie Series has jokes! :oI must have missed that scene
  2. SO in the spirit of Halloween and all and seeing as there are only 17 polls to choose from on e page one right now I thought I would make one. :)Simple Questions, which type of horror movie character/villain/monster/however you describe the guy/gal/thing that does the killing do you think is most effective as an element of horror? For me it's probably comes down to either the dead unstoppable psychopath ala Elm Street, or the freakishness of some ghost kids like in Grudge and Ring. But what do others think?
  3. I think some of the big reasons cinema admissions do so well here:Local films:Since the end of censorship 15 years ago, Korean cinema has consistently produced high quality films that the local audience will happily choose over the Hollywood offerings.Said with absolutely no numbers or proof I would guess there are not many other countries out there that have a top 10 all time box office chart made of almost exclusively local films.Hanging out with friends outside of home:When I was at school, most of the time spent with friends was at each others' homes playing games or whatever. Here in Korea it is not common to invite friends round to your home so you meet in the downtown areas. From here, your daytime choices are essentially coffee or cinema.Dating:Again, it is common for people to live with parents until marriage, even if they are 30 years old or even older. Therefore again, the option of a night at home together is more difficult and unappealing so you go out and thus the lure of the cinema is greater.Or maybe just the films this year have been better :)Like I said this is all speculation and guessing.
  4. A Whole New World. And I'm hoping this is because Danger zone is much higher than I expected as opposed to the other way around
  5. I would agree Hemsworth has what it takes to be one of the top 5 guys in Hollywood this time next decade.I also believe that Heath Ledger would have been in with a shout by now as well if things had turned out differently.
  6. Final thought,I feel there is more chance of an actor like Ryan Reynolds hitting the A List in the next 10 years than one like Fassbender.
  7. I think there are many different definitions that can be used for this discussion (and clearly are being used). For me the big factor over A list is the 'name value'. An A lister's next film will be describe as 'the new Will Smith Movie' or 'the Johnny Depp Movie' as opposed to 'there's a new movie out with that guy from Twilight in it' or 'the new Harry Potter film'. I think this then needs to be combined with which actors increase an audience purely by being in the film?An actor could be in a string of big hits purely because his agent got him in the right films. If I had been the star of Avatar it would have still made $1B dollars, it was that kind of film. Whereas if MI4 had starred Colin Farrell or Drederick Tatum (or whatever he's called) it would have grossed less.I am a casual movie goer (who owns about 400 DVDs), I will be drawn to the cinema based on an actor and vice versa turned away based on an actor. I also believe there are genre specific A listers. The top Examples being Adam Sandler (Comedy), possibly put Ben Stiller in that same bracket and same genre. However there are a very select few actors out there that can draw a smash hit audience regardless of genre, these would be:SmithCruiseHanksDeppClooneyDowney JrI do not see Fassbender starring in a succesful Rom Com, or Sandler in an action movie any time soon.
  8. I think it says a lot about Eye of the tiger that I consider it (and thought it was) the Rocky theme, not merely the Rocky 3 theme.(Looks like peoples' time is up but secretly hoping a couple of sneaky votes for Matt and Trey may turn up in the last second)
  9. From the List: The Incredibles although it probably ranks about 7th on my top Animated films (excluding adult animation) list:AladdinLion KingJungle BookToy Story 2ShrekShrek 2Kung Fu Panda 2IncrediblesRobin HoodBeauty and the Beast
  10. High School Musical 3 :DI suppose the closest I can think of (which will probably get roundly disagreed with) is Eurotrip > Road Trip + Boat Trip.Really hated Road trip but for some unknown reason found something really enjoyable about Eurotrip.
  11. My biggest with the remake was that they made Freddie a Paedophile. For me the thing that made Elm street great was how Englund played a character that you kind of routed for even though he was pure evil. He had character an charisma as opposed being another silent psycho who could walk faster than teenagers could sprint. The remake ruined that. Cheering on a psycho-killer in a film can be all part of the film, but a paedophile... that's too real life and so the character can never become the wise-cracking, enjoying what he does type character which was why Nightmare on Elm Street was able to support 7 sequels.
  12. Huzzah :DAlthough, even though I understand and agree with why the rule is in place it is upsetting when you think of an iconic song/scene combo and realise it doesn't qualify.Examples of such:Stuck in the Middle - Reservoir DogsBitter Sweet Symphony - Cruel IntentionsWe Will Rock You - A Knight's Tale
  13. As a Brit living in Korea who studied Hindi for a while and obviously has had a lot of exposure to US cinema, I sometimes feel it can be awkward when people talk about favourite films and I list films that nobody else has evr heard of. So I wanted to do a list of top 10 foreign language films. I know that not everybody here is a native English speaker so for clarity of this particular thread, Foreign means made outside of an English Speaking Country and also made in a non-English language. (Basically what I am saying is that The Passion doesn't count.) If people could also clarify their home nation (and place of reference if it seems pertinent) it could also be interesting to see who from where watches what. Here is my list: (You will notice that Asian CInema dominates) Just Missed the Cut: Les Visiteurs, Anatomy, Alone, Nightwatch, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Tale of Two Sisters and many more... 10) La Femme Nikita - France The only European Film on the proper list this is a film that used to be on the BBC all the time and there are scenes I remember even now. It was the first French film I really enjoyed (and possibly still the only non-comedy I've enjoyed,) and even if there are better films out there from across the channel this one has a special place for me. 9) Dil Chahta Hai - India Good old Channel four and their habit of showing Bollywood films at 3am, I turned this on as I was about to sleep and was still awake and watching 3 hours later. Set in Australia, the story is about love (I mean aren't all Indian Films ), and like with any good Indian film you have the time to really get involved with the characters and the drama. I am a fan of Bollywood, a big fan but also a very picky fan. These are not Hollywood films where 80 minutes later you're onto the next one, these things are 3 hours plus long and so need to hook an audience. This makes the actors pivitol to my enjoyment of a film. I don't think there is any other cinema where charisma of the stars has such an important role to play. It is also the reason why if I were to list my top 10 Bollywood films, this would possibly be the only one not starring Shah Rukh Khan. Great acting and a great way to pass 3 hours. 8) The Terrorist - Tamil A Tamil film I bought accidently when wanting to practice my Hindi and it is amazing. Set around a girl chosen to be a suicide bomber and the joy she feels at being chosen followed by the confliction she has as she learns more about what life is about. 7) My Sassy Girl - Korea The classic Korean Comedy that is still the reason why every other song released here seems to sample Pacobels Canon. A fun and quirky comedy that was a huge hit across Asia back when Korean comedy were not hits across Asia. A nice guy falls for a slightly crazy girl and as expected hijinks commence. Not much is lost on a Western audience bar the language and it doesn't fall foul to that too common Comedy mistake of making a character you are supposed to root for dislikable for 75 mintues of the film. 6) The Ring - Japan There had to be a Japanese horror on the list so why not the best Japanese horror of all time and one of the best horrors anywhere. Still being copied, still not surpassed. No need to say more. 5) Thirst - Korea This is the point where you realise I am a fan of Song Kang Ho and Park Chan Wook. The first of 4 Park Directed films on the list (2 of which star Song). This film is odd. A Catholic Priest who becomes a vampire and spends the film in turmoil over the inner struggle between his Catholic Faith to not harm and his Vampire lust for blood. Some of the best acting you will see anywhere in the world takes place in this film it is awe inspiring at times. Park has told a better story before, but Song Kang-ho has never been better than in this film (and i consider him the best actor on the planet). 4) Oldboy - Korea The one Korean film everyone may have watched and one of the most controversial endings in cinema. Winner of the grand jury prize in Cannes and a stunning piece of cinema all round. 3) JSA - Korea A story about North and South Korean soldiers becoming friends. A true masterpiece (with again awesome acting from Kang-ho). The first and perhaps only Korean film to humanise its North Korean characters. A tour de force of cinema. 2) Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - Korea One of Park's less popular films but yet my favourite Korean film. The lead actress is incredible in her role as a woman convicted of kidnapping and murdering a child and now out for revenge. There is tragedy, comedy, violence and everythig you need for a classic film. The twist ain't bad either. 1) Kal Ho Naa Ho India India and Shah Rukh Khan at their best. Stunning film, superbly acted, songs that I still listen to today (just look at my 100 film songs list) and an alround amazing film. One of only 3 films I brought with me to Korea in my suitcase when I moved. If you have never watched Indian cinema, watch this one. If you don't like this then Bollywood isn't for you as this is the best.
  14. Thanks All three songs are from a movie called Kal Ho Naa Ho (Bollywood), I think the English title is 'tomorrow may not be'. SO the song is called PRetty Woman but it is not THE Pretty Woman (although the chorus samples it somewhat) Pretty Woman; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCLmrP-0cyc Kal Ho Naa Ho: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOOe2_2UMEQ&feature=fvst If any songs on the list do not qualify, sorry
  15. Somehow, upon putting my list of 100 into order they became 101, so I am assuming there is a double up somewhere. (I cant find it though). 16. Oh one final question:If somebody only votes for say 10 songs, how will they score:100, 99, 98, 97 etc1, 2, 3, 4, 5... etcOr in step progressions (eg for 10 songs):100, 90, 80, 70.. etc
  17. So just to clarify what is okay I am going to pick a random song and scenarios (not necessarily from real movies), but just as examples of what is okay/not okay...Example Song: Love is all around by the Troggs.Possible scenarios:1) The Troggs version is played over a scene during the film. - Not Okay2) Wet Wet Wet release a version specifically for 4WAAF - Okay3) Bill Nighly Sings Christmas is All around for Love Actually - Okay4) The Troggs rerecord a new version for a film - Okay5) The Troggs appear as a wedding band or whatever and sing original song in a film - Not Okay6) The Troggs sing Christmas is all around - Okay?7) An actor sings Love is All Around to the original Troggs score - Okay? Two other small questions: Could one vote for a song performed within a movie by a character (eg Will Ferrell - Dust in the Wind: Old School)can the same song be voted for twice if it appears in 2 different versions in two different films (The closest I can think of right now is Love is All Around and XMas is all Around)
  18. I am not saying, never make a comic book superhero movie, but why are there not more Hancock's being made.Yes by now everything becomes a satire/homage to something else, but part of the reason I liked the concepts of Green Hornet and Kickass was that they were set in a world aware of the invented characters of Batman etc and were inspired from it.But surely both of those concepts could have been done originally without being constrained by the backstory of a pre-existing story. I wanted The Green Hornet to be about a rich guy essentially trying to be Batman in the Real World, but due to the comic (I assume) this couldn't happen. Still liked the film but would have preferred something different. The reason I like Hancock was because it was Superman in the real World, not Metropolis.
  19. 15) Freddie Vs Jason Freddie Kreuger is a character that lives through Robert Englund and for me at least, so long as he is playing the role there is something to enjoy in even the worst of Elm Street films (numbers 4 and 5 for example). I feel that this was a much better film than anybody expected or maybe even wanted it to be and twas a shame it never got a sequel. 14) Ju-On - The Grudge (Japan) Dear Lord what a scary film. Every scene is traumatising and the little boy is arguably the scariest thing in cinema history. However I always found the Japanese gilm to be too disjointed to rank higher, everything was centred around the house and trying to follow which character was who and when was far too difficult to rank it as a better film. But for scares... see opening two words of this. a asf sd adfddf 13)Hills Have Eyes I thought this films has a great build up and decent characterisation for a horror film. The evil people were sufficiently evil and it was a very enjoyable cinemagoing experience. The last 20 minutes however made me realise how desensitised to mutant killing I have become as it felt like watching a video game more than a film. 12) Cabin In the Woods A new but I thought well made film that did a good job of blending traditional horror with Scream-like satire of horror. The acting was very good and the story progressed well (even if it got a little lost near the end). The ending may not be the strongest closing scene ever but I enjoyed the homages, parodies, comedy and horror it gave us. 11) Hostel A film I almost switched off multiple times during the first 20 minutes or so as it was just a godawful terrible opening act. Everything I hate in a film. However when they finally made it to Slovakia everything changes and the closing 2 thirds is some of the best bure fear and horror Hollywood has created in the past 20 years. If they could have come up with a better concept as to how to get the characters to the Hostel instead of the Amsterdam rubbish this could have placed higher and mean I could reccommend it to more people without have to repeatedly apologise for the opening third. 10) Alone (Thailand) The follow up from the maker of Shutter (that I somehow still havent watched), this was a film about a dead Siamese twin. The director knows his horror and this film continued the rise of Thailand as perhaps the next great home of Asian Horror (that sadly never got realised). If Shutter is better I really should go watch it, but this is also really worth a view. 9) Blair Witch Project A film best watched with an open mind and willingness to be scared. I remember I saw this with some friends on DVD when it was first released and the reactions were mixed. By then we had all of course heard it ws 'the scariest film ever' 'best horror of alltime' etc and thus the viewers were split into two pre-film mindsets: those like me who allowed ourselves to be open to what the film was trying to do, and those who seemed to be like: 'Come on then. Scare me.'. This second group of course missed the point and in working to much on wanting to not be scared by the film, they missed the point of the film entirely. There are no monsters in this film, no demons or werewolves, there's not even a witch. It's all about how scary things can be when you let your mind play tricks on you, when your imagination runs wild. So if you don't let your imagination be free to run wild, the film will not be scary and be wasted on the viewer. 8) Final Destination The first of two maybe more contentious choices. Teen Horror has its lovers and haters. Like with American Pie style comedies, I love the best films i the genre and pretty much hate the rest. In Horror, Final Destination is among the best for me. Great concept, excellently executed and does what all good horrors do in keeping the audience cringing throughout when they know something bad is about to happen but don't quite know when or how. 7) Idle Hands Ah comedy Horror. I really really enjoyed this film (and not just for Jessica Alba), Really the first time since Scream I had seen a film blend horror and comedy how it should be done with an audience flipping between fear and laughter even within one scene. The fact I haven't seen this appear on any list suggests that either nobody saw it or that I am the only one who liked it. But its a lot of fun and there is some decent horror in there too. 6) R Point (Korea) Yes the Koreans can do horror too (even though thriller is their forte), and this was a little known yet damn scary film. A group of Korean soldiers stationed in Vietnam find themselves searching for a disappeared platoon and happen upon something much more scary. There are scenes in this film that put big budget action movies to shame and the direction (as with most Korean cinema) is top notch. Well worth searching out and watching as it seems like it is the only Asian horror not getting remade by the Americans... 5) Grudge Which could be a shame as sometimes, the Americans do a really good job at remaking Asian Horror films. If you remember my big criticism of Ju-On was the lack of a focal point to the story. Well that is dealt with here as Geller's character takes over from the House as the centre point to the story and it is all the better for it. Probably the last decent thing Geller did before her acting ability went down the drain, this is scary with a good plot. This is mostly thanks to the great decision to keep the story located in Japan as well as recasting that creepy little Japanese kid as the creepy little Japanese kid which allows this to maintain the horror of the Japanese version whilst improving the story. Great film. ignore the sequels. 4) Saw Along with BWP, the best film when it comes to exploiting pure fear. There is nothing really scary in this film scene to scene. Yes there are a couple of gory scenes, like with most horrors, but show somebody any 2 or 3 minute exert from Saw and they will not be all that scared by it. Show the whole film however and it will never leave you (I still have a friend that will not let anybody say the word Saw in his presence). Masters the slow build to perfection and puts the watcher fully in the position of the characters. The more the film goes on the more you think about yourself in their position, what would you do, could you do it? And from then on it is a month of nightmares worrying about the scenario coming true. 3) The Ring The best American horror of the past 20 years and it is a remake of the Japanese film. What makes it so good? Same as the Grudge, they respect the original story. Why mess with a good thing? Hollywood as a bad habit of dumbing stories down so that Americans can understand more easily and this is an insult to American Audiences. It would have been so easy to have Samara run around killing people in a haze of CGI and gore, but they didn't do that, they kept to the Japanese model and saved the payoff till the end in an awesome remake of the most iconic horror scene in Asian cinema and one could almost argue of all time. Everything about this film is done to the maximum capability and the only thing stopping this placing higher is the fact that the original was already faultless. 2) A Tale of Two Sisters (Korea) Well that and the fact that During the seven year period where Korea was producing the best cinema anywhere in the world, they also produced some horror too. Admittedly this is not a scary film, but it is immensely psychological and Kim Jee-Woon is possibly the 3rd best director in Korea (which is still arguably top 20 in the world). The thing that made Korean cinema so great 10 years ago was that directors had freedom nowhere else had. Censorship was gone and now a director was free to write and direct a film in their own vision without studio interference and the results were stunning. Remade in USA as The Uninvited (a film I haven't seen yet), this is a wonderfully made film that anybody willing to read subtitles must see. Will be really interesting to see The Last Stand next year and what happens when he gets to direct Arnie's comeback role. 1) Ring Not much left to say that wasn't said for number 3, except to say if you liked the Ring US, you must see the orignal. Even if subtitles are not for you this is the film that revived horror for me as a genre. Truly scary, horrific and any other adjective you can use for a horror film. It was cinematic perfection and that is a rare thing for horror to achieve. Well that was the longest post ever, a shiny gold star to anybody who actually reads it.
  20. At the risk of getting murdered...Sixth Sense - M Night ShylamagooAmazing how it can all go so wrong from there.
  21. I am not a comic book reader (have literally never seen a Marvel or DC comic let alone read one), however I am a big fan of superhero films. Therefore when I go to the cinema or buy a DVD and watch Hellboy, Constantine, Green Hornet etc I have no Idea that they are already comic characters until the inevitable Marvel or DC logo turns up in the credits. Now I enjoyed all of the above films a lot (maybe even more so than some who are burdened with having to compare every scene, tshirt and haircut to the comic book equivalent) but I wonder why a studio will choose to spend millions on getting the rights to an obscure unknown to the mainstream character instead of just making up their own own. I mean even Kickass turned out to be based on a book or something. DId that story plot really need to be attached to Marvel? Same with Green Hornet. Now there are some great lesser known comic book characters out there it seems (judging solely by the films) like Hellboy and Yes I did like Constantine also despite the apparent heresy that Keanu Reeves isnt a blond Livepudlian, but why can't a studio just make a stand alone superhero movie? Aside from Hancock and The Incredibles I cannot think of any original for cinema Superhero characters (and it wouldn't surprise be if either of those were also comic books to start with and I lookl like an idiot). Why doesn't it happen?
  22. So Nolan's trilogy is over. Won't talk about the film in specifics, but seing how big Batman obviously is what happens next? What would you like to see?For me as much as I like the Nolan films, I kind of want to see a batman a little more extracted from reality. Or to be fair, anything that allows the riddler to turn up (would even be open to a sequel to Batman forever with Carrey's Riddler but understand I am possibly alone in that one.)
