just got back from a screening. the big positives are the leads, in particular Asa. Kid is straight charm all throughout and really elevates a very muddled script. Britt was solid too, though I do feel she's consistently being typecast as the angsty teen. Also, another thing that was surprising was the VFX. They were really excellent for a film that isn't really a sci fi in any way except its setting. That being said, I can defintely see why this has been shuffled around on the schedule. It's one of those weird movies that could have been really, really good but the potential got lost somewhere in the execution. There are several instances where the film really has you and then immediately something nonsensical or ridiculous happens and the moments gone. It's a cycle that starts repeating about 1/3 the way in and never stops. I think I saw in the credits the story was written by either 4 or 5 people and you can definitely tell. I don't know how extensive those credits are (i.e. if just rewrites or what) but the film is quite disjointed and there are a few things, one scene in particular, that is just ridiciulously over the top. I'm curious to know the budget on this thing, it seems like it would have to be over 60+ and I don't see it making half that domestic. Ratings wise I'd probably go with C+ just based on how much I liked Asa in the lead. However, I think it's something I'll forget pretty quickly. EDIT: Just saw on BOM that the budget is 30 which is RIDICULOUS for the quality of the look of the film. Seriously shocking on that front.

movie is fucked. seriously the damage here is done. and whether you agree or disagree about the level of animal cruelty that video showed I can PROMISE you the crowd they wanted to carry this film (and could have carried it to be a nice sleeper) will just boycott the shit out of it. I must have seen 15 shared articles about it on Facebook alone yesterday. I legit think this could have done something like 15/75 but will now be lucky to make 25 total.

http://variety.com/2017/film/box-office/fantastic-beasts-worldwide-box-office-2-1201960085/ SO proud of my bb. 800 WW was about as best case scenario as you could hope for and as we've all discussed the domestic multiplier was truly something great. Excited to see if they really play up the Dumbledore connection for part two, which if done successfully could surely make a play for 250.

thats fair. he was playing an iconic character that hadnt been in the film until that movie. i just think the star wars brand is absolute PEAK right now and I think FOMO is a real thing that brings real money to the box office. i think there are instances (Paul Walker's last FATF) where people who have had had no interest have gone to the movies for whatever reason. I think its fear of missing out, they go because they think they should and they don't want to miss a cultural phenomoneon. I think Episode 8 will have all of the backing of the fanbase an then some along with peak GA interest. Just my opinion. a 300 OW would really take something special but I think this now has a legit shot at outpacing VII OW.

Box office tracking this Christmas felt lackluster to me. We have some films like RO doing really great but IDK this time of year on here is really nostalgic for me. I was active on BOM since I was 15 (I'm 28 now) and we have had some freaking exhilarating holiday runs. I think it's mostly the very mediocre new films we had open but the fact that only one of them BARELY broke 20 for the 5 day probably had a lot to do with it. Oh well, next Christmas looks like something special.
