  1. Weekend 17-20/03/2016 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % Change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Kung Fu Panda 3 35,335 N/A 51,082 1 2 Zootopia 17,883 -31.3% 85,541 3 3 London Has Fallen 14,609 -21.4% 91,821 3 4 The Divergent Series: Allegiant 8,683 -37.5% 33,020 2 5 The Finest Hours 5,245 N/A 5,245 1 6 Spotlight 5,241 -41.6% 64,724 4 7 Deadpool 3,675 -33.7% 212,893 5 8 Gods of Egypt 3,128 -29.1% 56,571 4 9 The Lady in the Van 3,109 N/A 3,109 1 10 Krigen [Danish] 2,919 N/A 2,919 1 Source: http://www.grandmagazine.gr/ngine/article/2983/sarakosth-kai-stasimotita-sto-box-office 'Kung Fu Panda 3' had a solid performance this weekend, grabbing first place with an opening significantly higher than its predecessor (27K admissions) and only slightly lower than the original 'Panda' film (38.6K admisisons). Including the previews it has already surpassed 50K admissions and will undoubtedly reach 100K admissions. The original had a 5.2x multiplier, with a final total of 200,600 admissions, while the second one had a 4.1x mulitplier, with a final total of 110,185 admissions. Even if its mulitplier is as low as 'Panda 2', it can still reach 150K admisisons, and given the approaching national holiday on the 25th March with schools closed on both the 24th and 25th, a 4x mulitplier is a foregone conclusion. A similar fate is awaiting 'Zootopia', which is also headed for around 150K admissions. The race between them will be close. In the meantime, 'London Has Fallen' has been outpacing 'Zootopia', since it has been selling enough admissions on non-holiday weekdays to make up for the difference by which 'Zootopia' has been leading on weekends. Among newcomers, no other movie - apart from 'Panda 3' - really impressed and some ('Pride and Prejudice and Zombies', 'Ein Atem') were complete disappointments, even when considering their per-theater average (1,111 admissions from 16 theaters and 1,192 admissions from 17 theaters respectively). 'The Finest Hours' and 'The Lady in the Van' played in a similar number of theaters (18 and 15 respectively) yet they earned much much more. The best per-theater average, though, was achieved by 'Krigen', which only played in 7 theaters. 'Allegiant' had a significantly better drop than its predecessor (and on par with the original) but it is trailing it by about 14K admissions. Holdovers generally performed well, with none dropping more than 42%. 'Spotlight' and 'Gods of Egypt' are nearing the end of their mediocre runs and 'Deadpool' is moving ever closer to 'Age of Ultron'. However, it remains questionable whether the next weekend's holiday will boost the above films since 'Batman vs Superman' is opening this Thursday. Based on past 'Batman' and 'Superman' film performance, this one should be happy to match the opening of 'Deadpool', although, given that this weekend is a holiday, it will probably go slightly higher.
  2. Stellar performance by Zootopia, both here and in US&Can. Can't wait for $900M and possibly $1B.
  3. Let's not keep our hopes up for $1B WW just yet. $850M is good enough. UK and Japan are two key markets and it is not guaranteed the film will perform exceptionally in either. In any case, it's great that Disney is providing daily updates to the overseas gross.
  4. New films released this weekend: The Finest Hours Kung Fu Panda 3 The Lady in the Van Krigen [Danish] Ein Atem [German] Shan he gu ren [Chinese-French] Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Der Fall Ö. [German] A three-way contest this weekend between 'Zootopia', 'Panda 3' and 'The Finest Hours'.
  5. Something very fishy going on. Spectre had its biggest per-theater average since its 4th weekend and it's hard to believe that it actually happened. They'll have to fudge the numbers again though, if they want it to reach $200M.
  6. Weekend 10-13/03/2016 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % Change from last weekend Total admissions (by Sunday) Clean Monday Week 1 Zootopia 26,016 -0.6% 58,029 6,636 2 2 London Has Fallen 18,596 -27.2% 62,780 5,062 2 3 The Divergent Series: Allegiant 13,883 N/A 13,883 3,246 1 4 Kung Fu Panda 3 (previews) 12,089 N/A 12,089 4,348 0 5 Spotlight 8,979 -39.1% 54,802 1,923 3 6 Deadpool 5,545 -45.9% 204,080 1,312 4 7 Gods of Egypt 4,413 -47.5% 50,083 1,049 3 8 Loreak [Basque-language Spanish] 3,221 -5.5% 8,065 567 2 9 Zoolander 2 2,961 N/A 2,961 809 1 10 Taxi [Iranian] 2,718 N/A 2,718 517 1 Sources: http://freecinema.gr/greek-box-office-clean-monday-sadness/ http://www.grandmagazine.gr/ngine/article/2977/apokriatiko-box-office-xoris-ekplhxeis This past weekend was the third in a row to record the lowest admission total of the year (i.e. each weekend beat the previous weekend's record-low) with 113,989 admissions. Expect the next weekend to beat this record again. At least Monday saved the day, being a holiday. 'Zootopia' unsurprisingly retained the #1 spot with a stunning 1% drop. Its run is far from over, keeping in mind that a two-day holiday is coming up on the 24th and 25th of March (a Thursday and Friday). 150,000 admissions remain a possibility. The news is even better consdering the competition it faced from 'Kung Fu Panda 3', which scored 12,100 admissions worth of previews this weekend from 63 theaters. To put that in perspective, it suffices to say that 'Kung Fu Panda 2' earned the comparable amount of 12,583 admissions on its third weekend from 82 thetaers. In second place came 'London Has Fallen' again, posting an impressive 27% drop from its opening. Its predecessor, 'Olympus Has Fallen', earned a total of 74,345 admissions, which the film will surpass by next weekend the very latest. The top opener, 'Allegiant', had a lower opening than 'Insurgent' (even when factoring in Monday's grosses) but higher than the original 'Divergent'. 'Panda 3' actually earned more than 'Allegiant' on Monday, as expected for an animated film. All other openers were truly disappointing with only two others making it into the Top 10 (at #9 and #10). Among other holdovers, 'Spotlight' had a rather meh drop of 39% and crossed 50,000 admissions, as did 'Gods of Egypt'. 'Deadpool' crossed 200,000 admissions, the second film to do so this year after 'The Revenant'. It is the biggest Marvel film released by Fox and is only days away from surpassing 'Iron Man 3' to become the biggest Marvel film outside the two Avengers and the original Spider-Man trilogy. Definitely not an outcome I expected. 'Loreak' had a minor drop and it very positive word-of-mouth. I'll refrain though from praising it too much since its survival depends on how many screens it will lose next weekend, which sees the release of eight new films.
  7. Weekend actual: $89.3M OS total actual: $295M Actual US&C total: $144M WW Total: $439M
  8. In the US and Canada, the final tally of Zootopia based on the post-second-weekend trajectory of: Lorax or Ice Age 2 -> ~$260M Monsters vs Aliens or Wreck-It Ralph -> ~$287M. Big Hero 6 -> ~$304M The weighted average is $280M but I think it will come closer to $290M China can make around $190M with 45% drops from now on and 3 weekends left. I say $200M. Japan is always a wildcard but I'll stay on the safe side and bet $50M. Rest of the world $315M. My relatively conservative estimates, bring it to about $850-855M. If there are any pleasant surprises down the line, the number could higher. In any case, Inside Out is likely to leave the Top 10 animated film WW list and Zootopia could even reach #8 easily.
  9. New films released this weekend: Η Μικρή Άρκτος (I Mikri Arktos; Ursa Minor) [GR] The Divergent Series: Allegiant Zoolander 2 Where to Invade Next Sunset Song L'Hermine [French] Felix and Meira [Canadian] El Ardor [Multi-country co-production] Taxi [Iranian] 'Divergent' earned 11,116 admissions on its opening, while 'Insurgent' made 20,412 admissions. 'Allegiant', the penultimate film of the series, may follow this upward trend (similarly to 'Mockingjay - Part 1'). Expect a very small drop from 'Zootopia' especially with a Monday holiday on the 14th, so the race to the top will be interesting.
  10. Weekend 03-06/03/2016 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % Change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Zootopia 26,186 N/A 26,186 1 2 London Has Fallen 25,557 N/A 25,557 1 3 Spotlight 14,739 2.4% 39,530 2 4 Deadpool 10,251 -67.8% 189,059 3 5 Gods of Egypt 8,399 -60.2% 40,524 2 6 The Revenant 3,607 -20.5% 325,342 7 7 Daddy's Home 3,481 N/A 3,481 1 8 Loreak [Basque-language Spanish] 3,407 N/A 3,407 1 9 The 5th Wave 3,380 N/A 3,380 1 10 Room 2,106 36.8% 45,810 5 Source: http://www.grandmagazine.gr/ngine/article/2961/ena-anapantexo-didumo-lagou-kai-alepous-stin-korufh-tou-box-office Really sorry for not posting this earlier. I've been quite busy this week. It was not a surprise to anyone that 'Zootopia' topped the charts although it underperformed slightly. What was a surprise was the difference between first and second place: 629 tickets. It's been quite some time since we saw such a photo finish. 'Zootopia' is thus unlikely to reach 200,000 admissions but I think 150,000 is possible, given its stellar ratings and universal appraisal. 'London Has Fallen' opened to more the 'Olympus Has Fallen' (19,266 admissions) but it is still far from a success. Among other openers 'Daddy's Home' and 'The 5th Wave' both underperformed. 'Loreak' was the only respectable opening, since it played in 5 theaters. Furthermore it was surprising how most movies dropped precipitously: 'Deadpool', 'Gods of Egypt', 'The Forest', 'The Brothers Grimsby', 'Hail, Ceasar!', 'Un plus une' and many more dropped more than 50% this weekend. Most of them actually dropped dramatically - around 70 or 80% which is truly puzzling. Most Oscar nominees and winners were the only ones that survived the plague that hit the box office: 'Spotlight', Best Picture winner, had a rather mild boost of 2% but it can easily reach 100,000 admissions if it manages to hold well for a couple more weeks. 'The Revenant' had its smallest drop yet and has now surpassed 'Shutter Island' and 'The Departed' to become the third -not second (kudos to Joel M) - biggest film starring DiCaprio (behind 'Inception' and 'Titanic'). 'Danish Girl' also held well but 'The Big Short' on the hand plummeted.
  11. New films released this weekend: Κάυση (Kafsi; Cremation) [GR] Zootopia London Has Fallen The 5th Wave Daddy's Home Victoria [German] Loreak [Basque-language Spanish] 'Zootopia' is the top contender for #1
  12. Its 59% drop was average, I would say, for a superhero film. Even if it continues the trajectory of ~60% drops, it can reach 200,000 admissions, the second film of the year to reach the milestone. Hopefully a third one is on its way next weekend, Disney's own Zootopia. This weekend had the lowest admission total of the year so far (118,074 admissions) by a wide margin. Newcomers were generally unimpressive, with 'Gods of Egypt' leading the pack. 'Spotlight', however, is bound to post good holds following its Oscar Best Picture win (baseδ on historical comparisons we can expect a big increase next weekend). I don't exclude the possibility of it crossing 100,000 admissions but it's too early for any serious predictions. All other openers earned nothing much and 'To xipnima tis anixis' was dreadful (725 admissions from 17 screens). Among other holdovers, no comment on 'Hail, Ceasar!'. 'Suffragettes' haδ a 2nd-weekend drop of 77%! 'The Revenant' had its biggest drop yet (I really miss that 2nd weekend drop of 27%), while 'Worlds Apart' is looking for a final total around 670,000 admissions. Nice holds, as always, were posted by the animated bunch. No major news for films below the Top 10.
  13. 'Deadpool' stayed on top for a second weekend but dropped 59%. 'Spotlight' just opened this weekend and will very likely see a surge in viewers following its Oscar win. More tomorrow...
  14. New films released this weekend: Το ξύπνημα της άνοιξης (To xipnima tis anixis; The Awakening of Spring) [GR] Spotlight Gods of Egypt The Brothers Grimsby The Forest Zvzidan [Croatian-Serbian] Marketa Lazarová [Czechoslovak] There is very little doubt that Deadpool will hold on to first place for a second weekend.

Even more impressively, it is the biggest opening for a non-sequel superhero movie (yes, Deadpool did appear in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' but that doesn't really count since this one has a new storyline and the marketing did very little to link Deadpool to the X-Men franchise). The next non-sequel in the list is 'Iron Man' at 61,400 admissions, although the list doesn't contain the original 'Spider-Man' or any other superhero films before 2003. Superhero openings (4-day, since 2003) Rank Title Admissions Release date Notes 1 Spider-Man 3 >100,000 03/05/07 85,000 in Athens only 2 Spider-Man 2 100,000 07/07/04 4-day estimate – we only have official number for 5-day weekend at 127,500 3 The Dark Knight 100,000 17/07/08 4 Avengers: Age of Ultron 94,250 30/04/15 5 Deadpool 77,774 18/02/16 6 The Avengers 75,755 26/04/12 7 The Dark Knight Rises 74,530 21/08/12 8 Iron Man 3 66,278 25/04/13 9 Iron Man 61,400 01/05/08 10 Iron Man 2 61,080 29/04/10 The ratio of admissions from the entire country over those from just Athens is 2.25. This is a very high number. I haven't seen anything like this as long as I've been following the Greek box office or in any of my research into past box office data. It is definitely a number that very few films of this size can achieve. Athens usually sells more admissions than the rest of the country or slightly less. In the latter case, the ratio may be a bit over 2. Reaching 2.25, though, is nearly unprecedented. 'Hail, Ceasar!' also had a decent opening, although the same can't be said for any other of the new releases. Holdovers had quite big drops. Obviously it was expected to some extent since last weekend Valentine's day boosted earnings, but 'Deadpool' also seems to have made all other movies bleed (too bad they're not wearing a red suit). The best hold of the Top 10 was posted by an animated film ('Les Nouvelles Aventures d'Aladin'), followed by 'The Revenant', which has now crossed 300,000 admissions. It is now days away from surpassing 'Shutter Island' and 'The Departed', to become the third-biggest Leo-starring film after 'Titanic' and 'Inception'. All other films dropped around 50%. 'The Boy' and 'Worlds Apart' are slowly losing sight of their desired milestones: 100,000 and 700,000 admissions respectively.
