  1. The most fun I had following box office runs were: - Frozen's domestic and Japan run - Inside Out VS Jurassic World VS Minions - Star Wars Episode 7 - ZOOTOPIA's China, Japan, and domestic runs - Finding Dory - The Secret Life of Pets - Moana (?)
  2. And my excitement for this film continues to increase! I'm a sucker for movies like these and if they somehow execute the messy narrative, this film should do really well critically and may even be the last film from 2016 to pass $300 million. Its up to Moana, Rogue One, and Sing to make the Top 10 $300+ million club a reality.
  3. Exchange rates killed Star Wars. With current exchange rates, it would be sitting all high and mighty at around $102 million in Japan as opposed to its $96 million.
  4. Animated Film: Domestic Gross: Worldwide Gross: Kung-Fu Panda 3 $143,528,619 $519,881,355 Zootopia $341,268,248 $1,023,772,429 Angry Birds $107,509,366 $349,779,543 Finding Dory $486,278,295 $1,026,933,304 The Secret Life of Pets $367,881,865 $874,324,567 Ice Age: Collision Course $64,063,008 $407,446,018 Sausage Party $97,670,358 $139,908,213 Kubo and the Two Strings $48,019,974 $69,491,837 Storks $71,245,243 $176,945,243 Trolls $135,785,969 $292,175,365 Moana $84,411,896 $101,589,690 Total: $1,947,662,841 $4,982,247,564 Average: $177,060,258 $452,931,596
  5. Considering how "How Far I'll Go" is still in the Top 10 of iTunes (Excluding The Voice performances) and the Moana soundtrack is getting better reviews than Frozen AND is sitting at #3 and #8, music is not a disadvantage. Sure a first-listen might not warrant reactions similar to "Let it Go" but with more listens it gets better; you hear the arrangements, the beautiful melody, the instruments, her glowing and warm tone, the modulation, etc... And the millions of people who've bought or listened to the album or songs agree with me judging by its Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, and Billboard performances.
  6. Comparing 2016 to 2017 will be like comparing Mariah Carey to Ariana Grande respectively. Probably will have a few good things here and there, but cannot be compared to legends.
  7. That's great! The demographic for my school is 9/10 - 14/15 and ranges from 6th-8th grade. Everyone knows how much of a Disney fanatic I am and asked me how it good it was and of course I said it was amazing! I'm going with 4 other people to go see it again this Saturday and that'll hopefully solidify its place in the Top 5 of Disney Revival's best films!
  8. During school today, SOOO many people said they wanted to see the film after hearing how good it was because people thought the trailers and teasers looked too kiddy. The people who did see it compared it to Zootopia and Frozen, saying "Not as good as Zootopia or Frozen, but definitely good on its own." People also liked "You're Welcome" much better than "How Far I'll Go," and said the best part of the film was the climax to resolution and said it was the most beautiful animated film they've seen. My friends are already inviting me to go see it again this Saturday.
  9. During my showing: - Beauty and the Beast got almost zero reactions - Cars had a lot of reactions, "They're making a new one?" "Did McQueen die?" "CARS!!!" "That was dark" - Hidden Figures had a few laughs - Sing... SOOOOO many laughs and SOOOO many people whispering that they want to see it - The short had the best reaction with the father in front of me whispering to his kid about the message of the short, a 12 to 13 persons group of teens behind me talking about how it was basically an Inside Out 2.0... and my little brother asking me about when Moana was going to end "It didn't even start yet" Deduction: my brother and all the kids are obsessed with Sing and want to see it during the holidays, my brother and a few other kids hated Moana, and teens love Disney and Moana!
  10. Hopefully they perfect that CGI/2D hybrid software because we all know a story that resonates with EVERYONE, a marketing strategy akin to Illumination's, a release date during Oscar Bait Season, and rave critical reviews = instant BP! ... I wish
  11. The only reason $700 million would seem like a disappointment is only because we feel that as loving and caring people, everyone should go see the film and enjoy one of the best theater experiences of 2016. I'm expecting anywhere between Big Hero 6's and Inside Out's numbers. Unless it breaks out in a big market outside of the US the Billion Dollar Dream is dead. However, it has a really good release date in Japan and Disney may be going for a WOM ran behemoth much like Frozen. It just has to survive a few months of "competition" to take advantage of the national holidays. As for China, Frozen "only" did a bit below $50 million and this is heading towards $30 - 40 million so I don't think it's a bad number. The true telling signs of whether this will break out or not is next week so we'll just have to wait and see. At the moment, the soundtrack is steadily gaining traction, so maybe it'll reach its peak much later with the help of its songs? WOM-ran films tend to open medium to small and lose steam very slowly, and I think that was Disney's plan all along: create a WOM behemoth much like Zootopia and Frozen. PS: In response to @Quigley, I believe Big Hero 6 did around $80 million in China.
  12. Within almost a week of release, every single one of the original songs from the Moana soundtrack have charted in the Top 200 of iTunes. "How Far I'll Go" (Auli'i Cravalho) is sitting at #11 while "We Know the Way" and "You're Welcome" are in the Top 50. "I am Moana" is now gaining speed and could crack the Top 50 in a few days, becoming the true success story of the soundtrack. The only song under performing is "Shiny" which only started charting today after every other original song from the soundtrack. "How Far I'll Go" (Reprise) and "Know Who You are" charted BEFORE "Shiny" and HIGHER than "Shiny." As for the box office prospects I hope Moana rebounds during Saturday and Sunday to take the 5-day animated feature record in gross.
  13. Hopefully that's the case. The movie version of "How Far I'll Go" rises to #34 on iTunes after having trailed behind Mariah Carey's christmas anthem (this song will never die) for a few hours. "We Know the Way" rises to #80, "You're Welcome" arrives at #98, "I Am Moana" is sitting at #151, and "Where You Are" is at #191. Only "Shiny" is left to enter the Top 200... (Tragic "villainous" song performance). The soundtrack is #10 on the albums chart, going down one spot from an original high of #9 today.
  14. 2017 in animation looks... bleak. Each year usually offers at least 2 staple an destined to get great reviews films, but all of the slated releases look/sound iffy to me. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised. Probably will be the first year I'll see more live action films than animated ones.
  15. Rotten Tomato scores for Major Animated Features of 2016: 1. Zootopia - 98% and 8.1 average rating 2. Kubo and the Two Strings - 97% and 8.4 average rating 3. Moana - 97% and 8.0 average rating 4. Finding Dory - 94% and 7.7 average rating 5. Kung Fu Panda 3 - 87% and 6.8 average rating 6. Sausage Party - 83% and 6.8 average rating 7. Secret Life of Pets - 75% and 6.2 average rating 8. Trolls - 75% and 6.2 average rating 9. Storks - 63% and 6.0 average rating 10. Angry Birds - 43% and 5.0 average rating 11. Ice Age 5 - 13% and 4.0 average rating Average Percent: 75% (Fresh) Average Rating: 6.6 2016: Year of Animation indeed!
  16. I agree! The amount of quality, germane, and thought provoking and enchanting animated features this year has been insane! The studios came in ready to go ballistic, played the stage like pros, and are hopefully going out with a big bang! From Kung-Fu Panda 3 all the way to Moana and hopefully Sing, 2016 has been a historic year for animation not only in terms of box office revenue, but quality wise as well.
  17. This year is the most active I've ever been on this site. Every time Disney releases a new animated feature I spew away and disappear for several months until the next animated feature hits... Which has been quite a lot and of course other studios' releases had me hyped and pumped up! - January: Kung-Fu Panda 3 was great! I grew up with the franchise and can't believe it's been over 8 years since the first one - March: Zootopia... stunning and my favorite movie of the year - June/July: Finding Dory and Secret Life of Pets were amazing in their own ways - August: Kubo and the Two Strings was enchanting and dazzling - November: Moana... UGH! Between Zootopia and this... I can't even choose - December: SING! I'm so scared yet hyped for this one! The trailers have been great in my opinion and hopefully Illumination hits it out of the ballpark! Hopefully Moana brings in the big bucks and crosses the $300 million threshold! <3
  18. The heart, the soul, the storytelling, the character development, the twists, the turns, and everything about Moana from the very tip to the core makes Moana one of the greatest Disney/movie experiences of all time. I had high expectations going in, and Moana not only shattered those expectations with ease, but set new standards of animation and storytelling. The storytelling might be cliche to others, it may be linear, it may seem as though you were already a way-finder and could navigate through every nook and cranny, but Moana is simply dazzling and extravagant. The trailers, the teasers, the posters, etc... they do not do Moana enough justice in showing the grandeur and the very essence of what Moana is. Moana is simply heartwarming, packed with emotion and thrill, and sets itself apart by not only digging into its own premise, but by providing theater goers a sense of relief from everyday events. Moana is not just good, it is amazing! Is it better than Zootopia? No, but it has its own niche and no longer needs to be compared to Zootopia. Moana will be remembered for a very long time not only because of its easy storytelling and great music, but because Moana herself and Maui have cemented themselves as some of the greatest characters ever produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Moana is the story that Disney has tried time and time again to tell, but never quite succeeded... until now. Moana is a triumphant hark from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Moana is Disney's call to all foes, challengers, and belittlers: we are at the top and we're not coming down. A-
  19. Moana: - $325 - 350 million domestically - $500 - 600 million OS WW: $825 - 950 million PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE GROSS OVER $1 BILLION!
  20. With Zootopia's chances of winning at less than 1%, we shall continue to dream... Hopefully the highest ceiling is cracked open by a deserving animated film in the near future. As animation continues to ride on high tides, we can only hope the stigma surrounding the genre as nothing more than child's entertainment is soon dispelled and the genre soon is revered as the form of art that it is. Animation is an amazing, creative, and wonderful expression of art that deserves the same amount of attention and reverence as live action films and one can only hope that one day we view it as such. The highest ceiling for animation to break is to win that coveted Best Picture oscar and I'm certain it will happen one day. If Beauty and the Beast couldn't do it, if Up couldn't do it, and if Toy Story 3 couldn't do it, then some other great film will do it. That I'm sure of.
  21. I was watching Yuri on Ice thinking it was one of those typical sports anime releases, but then episode 7 came out and everything changed. 0///0
  22. I expect Zootopia to get a nomination in Best Original Screenplay and Best Animated Feature and Moana to get nominations Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song... hopefully 2.
