  1. SOUTH KOREA - DAILY FILM ADMISSIONS: Day 1 84,797 160,592 138,028 62,258 35,604 2 84,384 170,315 132,464 68,872 46,874 3 430,189 169,404 97,061 56,705 4 435,610 335,326 170,508 128,705 5 157,528 333,016 159,563 142,478 6 187,623 154,783 74,966 61,335 7 161,927 150,770 82,143 79,043 Week 1: Total: 1,709,407 1,488,030 720,543 561,204 3-3.5 million admissions or $20+ million seems reasonable as I believe two blockbusters will soon be released and Your Name is doing phenomenal business and could gross north of $40 million bringing its worldwide cumulative to a staggering $400 million! However, Moana will benefit from the Lunar Holiday, so it could potentially challenge higher ceilings, but its still too early to tell how strong WOM is although it has high ratings on Netizen, a high audience score, and a good critical reception. Although I'm no expert in the South Korean box office, it seems Moana will stay flat on Friday when most, if not all releases typically increase. Hopefully it rebounds Saturday and Sunday.
  2. Non-final Thursday: Your Name continues its domination as Moana debuts in 2nd place after raking in $34,554 from 16 theaters on Jan. 11th. For "comparisons," Frozen debuted with 160,592 admissions on Jan. 16th and had an overall admissions total of 1.7 million for it's weekly total. 1. Your Name - 121,462 2. Moana - 84,794 3. Master - 46,114 4. Allied - 43,505 5. Assassin's Creed - 41,405 6. La La Land - 17,359 7. Passengers - 11,063 8. Sing - 9,271
  3. The top two films of 2016 are Moana and Zootopia...

  5. It opened in Brazil on Jan. 5 and has Japan, Hong Kong, Argentina, South Korea, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden as major markets left and a few mkre smaller ones.
  6. Moana's U.K performance has been quite staggering where the film opened to $2.7 million and has grossed $21 million to date which is around a 7.77x multiplier, Moana also opened to $2.8 million in Mexico and has grossed $12 million to date which is a 4.2x multiplier, and Moana has additionally posted a 10x multiplier or higher in Germany, Spain, and Italy. The consensus seems to be that Moana will open small and leg its way to a respectable if not great gross. Japan and a few other territories wait in the wings so let's see if the film can get past BH6 worldwide.

  9. 2016 saw animation dominate and conquer the box-office scene with a domestic intake of over $2.2 billion and a worldwide intake of $5.4 billion. Can 2017 follow the trend and increase from the already mind-boggling figures posted in 2016? The animation slate, opposite of 2016, in 2017 seems much weaker without any offerings from Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS), but that does not diminish the possibility of another record year for 2017 with releases from PIXAR, Illumination, the LEGO franchise, and many more. PIXAR currently has an "iffy" original offering slated for November as it tries to tap into the musical genre with an animated feature about a young boy and his adventures in the world of the dead. Cars 3, the third film in the notorious Pixar franchise will also see a revival with a summer release in June hoping to cash in on the poorly received franchise. Illumination will be looking towards continuing their fire streak with Despicable Me 3, the third animated feature in the Despicable Me franchise which has already amassed over $2.6 billion worldwide. With the continuing trend of sequels tending to drop softly or harshly from their previous installement depending on the original material, can Despicable Me 3 hope to gross over Minions, their only $1 billion film or Despicable Me 2? Illumination has always been a brand known for its great appeal to younger kids who eat their outputs like sugar cookies and their marketing tactics, but is it time to end the story of a misfit villain? Although Despicable Me 3 is all but guaranteed to gross over $250 million if not $300 million, only time will tell as to how far this film will go. Truly kicking off the Lego Film Universe, Warner Brothers will be hoping for another smash with The LEGO Batman Movie akin to the $267M grossing The LEGO Movie as The LEGO Batman Movie is slated for a February release. Ninjago, another LEGO franchise film will be released in September and although September is usually the "slump-dump" period for films, Ninjago will hope to turn things around and perform like the Hotel Transylvania films. 2017 will be the telling signs for how well and if at all the LEGO franchise will survive. Dreamworks will continue their two animated features per year trend by releasing The Boss Baby in March and Captain Underpants in June. Past Dreamworks films have performed in the $120-150 million range and The Boss Baby and Captain Underpants look to follow suite unless somehow one of or both films break out. Dreamworks has been struggling lately to put out quality films with box office receipts to boot, but have received moderate successes with their original stories such as Home and Trolls, so hopefully The Boss Baby and the adaptation of Captain Underpants follow suite.
  10. I concur: One of the greatest films of all time in my opinion. No other Walt Disney Animation Studios film has matched the sheer awesomeness, beauty, awe, and pure magic Beauty and the Beast conveyed and expressed. If there ever was a film that truly made you believe in magic and love, its Beauty and the Beast no doubt.
  11. It's already broken out in France and is the highest WDAS or second highest WDAS release in smaller territories like the Philippines. But I agree, Japan could be the key ingredient to make this film stand out amongst the 2016 animated blockbusters.
  12. Disney dominated, crushed, and obliterated box office records left and right in 2016, proving that their "controversial" formula works, and in a big way too. Almost every single film they released in 2016 was a "must-see," an "event," and fueled by their animated properties, they've accomplished a feat which no other studio has ever or will ever for a very long time be able to accomplish. Almost every single film they released received unanimous critical praise and their films consistently tried to push the medium forward. You can hate on Disney all you want. You can disagree with their choices all you want. And at times you may be immensely vexed with Disney as a company, but Disney has come a LONG way from its dark days as a company and even if unseen/unheard turmoil still exists somewhere within, their box-office receipts showcase the very power of the company and what its capabilities are. Favorite Disney Films of 2016 (in no particular order, except for Zootopia being on top): - Zootopia - Finding Dory - Moana - The Jungle Book - Rogue One - Doctor Strange - Queen of Katwe I've yet to see Civil War, Pete's Dragon, The BFG, Alice 2, The Finest Hours, and The Light Between Oceans.
  13. Where is Moana likely to end? Isn't this week its last week since it only received a one week extension?
  14. Final domestic gross divided by their opening weekend.
  15. In terms of box office returns, yes, Illumination is dominating the animation field. In terms of quality, no, Illumination needs to truly get a grip on how to tell entertaining tales without being cliche. A book may be geared towards kids, but if it's not a good work of literature, I don't think parents who want their children to grow up to push their respective boundaries would be keen to let their children read those books. In the same way, although films may provide a sense of entertainment, much like any work of art, you always have to ask certain questions such as, "Did it push the medium forward?" "Was the storytelling coherent?" Yeah, there's nothing wrong with films geared towards kids with kid jokes and kid themes and kid _____ so on, but there's also nothing wrong with being critical of Illumination's products and their quality because the bar for quality animation has risen considerably and Illumination should at least try to reach those standards. Sing is a good film, The Secret Life of Pets is a good film, heck, the Lorax is a good film. But do they really push the medium forward: Not really.

  17. Watch every film in the Top 10 of 2018 be from Disney... That would never happen, but it would be the most hilarious thing ever!
  18. Very true and thank you! That is so nice and endearing to hear! <3 <3
  19. Diversity in entertainment is important, especially in the United States when it is considered the so-called, "Melting pot of the world." When you have a country as culturally, religiously, and ethnically diverse as the United States of America, it is VERY important that you showcase the beauty in all the cultures, religions, and ethnicities you house. Some people may be less prone or comfortable to talk about representation and some may say it is needless, but young children do watch, do care, and do hear and they do learn from what the grown ups do and what is put on the screens and on paper. As a fourteen year old who's been raised all his life in a very conservative Christian family, I can say for a fact that because of representation, I could relate with certain characters and ideas in books, films, television, etc... and found out that being "gay" is not so bad. So yeah, I do think representation is VERY important and it is a shame that we still hold on to certain 18th century propaganda to substantiate why the way things are is okay.
  20. I'm just hapy Moana's going to jump back to No.3 in the Top 10 ahead of Passengers after falling to No.6 during the last weekend.
