  1. ^Agreed. These re-releases are just another way for Hollywood to avoid originality. They're worse than remakes, no matter how good the movie is.
  2. Six movies is just too many for a franchise like Fast. Not interested, even if reviews are good. Looking forward to Iron Man 3, Trek II, Pacific Rim, Robopocalypse (as long as Spielberg is still directing), World War Z, Lone Ranger, Man of Steel, and maybe After Earth. Smith is one of my favorite actors but it's hard imagine M. Night turning things around. Every time he comes out with a new film the internet community thinks "maybe this one will be his comeback." And then it ends up worse than the last.
  3. I'll never root for the success of a 3D re-release. Hollywood keeps topping themselves as far as how unoriginal they can get.
  4. 152mil opening weekend is more than just the fanbase.
  5. I've actually noticed a trend in recent years where films released in Jan-April overperform and many released during the summer underperform. I think it's simply a matter of dollars being spread more evenly throughout the year.
  6. Unfortunately no. I was just visiting Austin that weekend. It's mostly Cinemarks and AMCs in Dallas and they all have plenty of annoying texters.
  7. The Hunger Games:Alamo Drafthouse Austin TXSat 8:45 pm SOLD OUTTrailers:Breaking Dawn - laughter at the end when Bella peeka-boos the deerPrometheus (teaser) - silenceSnow White and the Huntsman - whispersThe Avengers - some clappingMovie: A-Best start to a book-adapted franchise I've seen. Lawrence is amazing and a star in the making, Hutcherson is endearing, and the supporting cast (Tucci, Sutherland, Banks, Kravitz, Bentley, and especially Woody Harrelson) are all aces. Liam Hemsworth doesn't make much of an impression but then again he has little to do here. Nearly every scene/note is pitch-perfect. My only complains are the oft-mentioned skaky-cam which is overdone in a few scenes, and the "clothes on fire" effects are pretty fake-looking. I imagine they'll double the budget for the sequel though. Deserves all the money it made. Crowd was into it and there was clapping at the end. Girls next to us were crying during one of the death scenes.
  8. Audiences sure are harsh towards horror movies, aren't they? Havn't seen Silent House but I highly doubt it's "F" bad.
  9. Climax was good, but the rest of the film (showing the trio learning and goofing around with their powers) was more interesting/original. Character development made the movie what it is.
  10. The Lorax is huge, no doubt. But has anyone mentioned the possibility that 10-15mil of its OW could be due to teen sneak-ins for Project X?
  11. You're right, they're biased against blockbusters (Rise of the Apes, Harry Potter, The Dark Knight, Nolan not nominated for Inception, etc)...but they also fail to recognize true "movie as an artform" films (Drive, Shame, Take Shelter, countless others). They're the worst sort of voting body. They like "middlebrow" i.e. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, War Horse, The Artist, The King's Speech, etc.
  12. What's up with Wanderlust's number? 2.5 Fri and 3.0 Sat means 5.5 before Sunday. So it's going to make only 0.3 on Sun?
  13. By the way, has nobody noticed the obvious green screens in a few non-action shots during the ASM trailer? It's distracting, and makes obvious the fact that they shot quite a bit in L.A. and on soundstages. Seeing the trailer again on the big screen, I noticed for the first time how "been there, done that" the whole thing feels. Besides more night scenes, the whole tone doesn't feel THAT much different from the original trilogy.
  14. The scene between him and the drug runner with a phone in his mouth was pretty funny.
  15. Ghost Rider II:9:30 pm75% fullTrailers:ParaNorman - few laughs21 Jump Street - laughs (seriously, people...nobody gives a shit if the old tv show was a drama)Prometheus - silenceThe Amazing Spider-man - some chatter, a few "huh?"Movie: C-Nice visuals, better action than the first (Neveldine/Taylor know how to shoot a car chase), but predictable and cliched in almost every way. Ciaran Hinds and Idris Elba bring much needed gravitas, but they can't save a nearly non-existent plot nor the tired action-movie tropes. Cage is predictably looney, but even his form of crazy is beginning to wear. Entertaining in spurts, but too campy to recommend.
  16. You can't say a guy is one of the worst actors ever if he's had good performances before (Moonstruck, Leaving Las Vegas, Raising Arizona, Adaptation, Matchstick Men, Bad Lieutenent, etc). Cage just seems to not give a fuck when he stars in these types of movies, so he turns on "Crazy Nic" and goes over the top with it.
  17. I find it amusing that people still have to be surprised by Reynolds. He's been proving his acting mettle for quite a while now, it's just that he tends to choose bad projects.
  18. I was referring to The Devil Inside. Overhyped? Where? Here? LMAO...I don't base my expectations on what people on forums think. I base it on the trailers. They were great, the reviews are great, and the movie is close to great. It'll still be a success, I guess I just don't see how the aforementioned films held more appeal on OW.I imagine Radcliffe is helping Woman in Black, and apparently it's not too bad.
  19. The box office is weird nowadays. How a generic R-rated crime thriller, the umpteenth exorcism film, and the fourth movie in a tired franchise that is STILL aping The Matrix all open bigger than Chronicle is strange, strange, strange. The Grey too, although that one at least looks pretty decent.
  20. Chronicle6:00 pm showing80% fullTrailers:The Three Stooges - laughs at the lobster and Snookie scenes (ugh)21 Jump Street - lots of laughsThis Means War - few laughsBattleship - teenagers were excited, otherwise silenceMovie: B+Tops Cloverfield as the best found-footage film to date. The early scenes are highly entertaining and full of humor, which the audience responded well to. Halfway through is where the plot turns more dramatic (and even disturbing in some cases), and the film becomes something of a character study with superpowers. With the exception of a few moments towards the end, the acting is top notch. The effects range from perfect to serviceable, and the climax (not to mention those flying scenes) is breathtaking. An impressive debut from Josh Trank. Audience clapped at the end.
  21. According to early screenings it's one of the better horror movies in a long time.
  22. Haywire: D+Red Tails: AUnderworld: A-Moviegoers sure are sophisticated, aren't they?
  23. There are already enough unoriginal ideas in Hollywood. Should we really encourage something as blatantly lacking in ideas as re-releases? Not to mention the original movies were never intended for 3D so the 3D itself will be inherently lackluster. 3D only seems to work when the film was shot with it in mind, and with a filmmaker who knows how to use it (Avatar, Hugo).
