  1. I like how riczhang just calls him Marty like they're best buds. And by like I mean I could never understand why anyone who reviews any movie does that.
  2. I just rewatched Elle the other day. That Christmas dinner might be the funniest prolonged comic set-piece since Wolf of Wall Street. By the time one of those guys put on Lust for Life I completely lost it. What a movie.
  3. Too bad it didn't happen to another 2016 film that had a firm ground in faith and starred Andrew Garfield that actually asked the audience to do some mental work.
  4. It's not gonna drop so softly on a post-holiday weekend. Should be happy if it gets to $20m.
  5. Not to mention she herself won for playing a sexual abuse survivor. I do think it should be about the art but she's got every right to not be happy about this. Though if she really didn't want to be the one to hand Affleck the statue she had plenty of time to approach the organizers or whoever about it and talk to them about arranging something different this year I dunno.
  6. Yeah Larson will be standing there dreading that she might have to read Casey Affleck's name/hoping that it's Denzel instead and she won't have to force herself to smile.
  7. Let's just have Kate Mckinnon, Dwayne Johnson and SLJ present them all.

  10. I doubt there are many people among the GA who, even if they didn't much like the movie, are going around saying they wish it starred some people from Broadway or the reanimated corpses of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. I don't wanna obsess over this too much or say that people shouldn't express their opinion about the movie at this point, but that second quote reads like it's still December and there hasn't been two months of backlash and arguments that already served as fodder for an SNL sketch for chrissake.
  11. Gloriously entertaining. TIGHTLY plotted (I was shocked to find out this was an original screenplay and not an adaptation of some novel that they had to trim down) and emotionally complex. Verhoeven takes the aesthetics of your typical prestige WW2 melodrama and injects them with actual energy and character, playing around with the comfortable archetypes of both sides of the conflict (three years before Tarantino did the same thing in Inglourious Basterds) and pointing out all the bullshit it sees while treating every serious moment with the gravity it deserves. Very involving without being the least bit sentimental, and, in the end, a real kick in the balls to all the "respectable" airless European movies of the same vein. Don't understand how this isn't widely considered a bonafide modern classic.
  12. Read the plot summary of the novel on Wiki. Woof. Between that, the cast and the director this has a pretty good chance of being unbearably manipulative so yeah I'm out for now.
  13. Yeah if Weinstein actually bothered to promote Lion it could be making twice what it's doing now.
  14. 200m for LB would require legs at least as good as The Lego Movie's and that is simply not happening.
  15. I got no problem with them picking Hardy and Stewart.
  16. the BAFTAs really spreading the love around in the technical categories so far. Original Score: La La Land Editing: Hacksaw Ridge Production Design: Fantastic Beasts Costumes: Jackie Sound Mixing: Arrival Makeup: FFJ if anyone's been suspecting that it won't be complete La La Land domination on Oscar night this adds a little more weight. I'd definitely been thinking that FB might pull an Alice in Wonderland and take production design or costumes or both.
