  1. Simply put it's one of the most groundbreaking and influential films ever made.
  2. Which one? Just wait until I see Boyhood and proclaim it a masterpiece
  3. I wonder if GBH could pull off a win. Has anything this year been even close to it in terms of art direction?
  4. Maybe I'll take it back once this comes out, but I really wish they left it at 3. This just feels like Disney in full "fuck you, pay me" mode.
  5. 110 now. Not a ton of progress. Also, Masaki Kobayashi falling off the list is a fucking disgrace. He should be in the top 50 based on Harakiri alone.
  6. Saw this for the first time ever last week. Straight into my top 10.
  7. McGregor acts like the stupidest person in the universe.
  8. Before 1972 so that Godfather, Jaws and Star Wars don't make up the Top 3. Though The Good the Bad and the Ugly or 12 Angry Men would probably win in that case anyway.
  9. Pretty great and well-paced for its first 150 minutes, too bad it goes on for another 45 after that. The final big argument between the main character and his wife - the emotional climax and highpoint of the film - is immediately followed by a sequence that's unnecessary, wildly contrived (the moment with the money is just ridiculous) and just feels tonally off. (It's like if Dostoevsky tried to finish writing a Chekhov drama for him). Then the movie pretty much limps to its final scene. A very admirable character study that ultimately confuses length with depth. Great performances and cinematography though.
  10. I give Keaton the edge but we shouldn't underestimate Cumberbatch's dark Weinstein powers. They'll probably both win at the Globes (comedy and drama respectively) so it'll be a race to the end.
  11. I actually think Princess Kaguya is #2 right now because in addition to critical acclaim it's likely the last chance they have to give Ghibli its much-deserved second Oscar and Isao Takahata his first and only one. I think it has much more of a chance against Lego than The Wind Rises did against Frozen. 1. Lego 2. Kaguya 3. HTTYD2 4. Big Hero 6 5. Boxtrolls
  12. Well, his next project is a full season of an HBO series
  13. Saw it for the second time today and became even more convinced it's pretty brilliant. Love the Moebius' band structure, the mood, the soundtrack and the way (almost) all of it snaps right into place in the final 20 minutes. And, at the risk of sounding controversial, Patricia Arquette is jaw-droppingly gorgeous in this.
  14. Slowly but surely getting through the wilderness that is the middle of the second season. Y'know, I was expecting that James subplot to be a complete waste of time but it's kinda fascinating. I actually like the basic idea - a naive, good (as in "good person") character from Twin Peaks ventures outside after a trauma and immediately finds out that it's no better out there. What that storyline needs is a better-developed, more likable main character than James, a better actor than James Marshall, a bit more coherence and enough style for it to come off as a genuine neo-noir instead of a ludicrously sleazy direct-to-DVD erotic thriller. So it wasn't unfixable from the start, but they did more or less everything wrong with the premise which I guess is why it's so maligned. But I think Lynch might have made it work (much better) if he had been around and put his mind to it - granted, that's something that could be said about a lot of things, but still. He could have also made the femme fatale less obviously trashy and cast Isabella Rossellini or someone in that vein. Now, the whole subplots concerning Little Nicky, Super-Nadine, and the mayor's brother? That right there is a waste of time. Just one big void. All of that shit belongs in a third-rate sitcom. Ben Horne reenacting Civil War isn't much better but at least we get Richard Beymer chewing the scenery which puts a smile on my face no matter what he's doing.
