  1. Ahem, let's get back to another polarizing film...how about that Titanic 3D drop? We expecting good legs or what?
  2. Not an exciting weekend but not a disastrous one. Cabin did fine, Three Stooges surprised, and Hunger Games held its own.
  3. Well Stooges will likely play to families just as well as Hunger Games has so far so it's looking like a really tight race.
  4. I'm serious!! Why wouldn't you advertise to the one demographic that made your movie the then-most successful movie of all time?
  5. Both Titanic and American Reunion belong to a different era in all honesty. Titanic's run is more of an anomaly than a cultural icon; not to mention that Titanic's main audience, teenage girls, weren't the main focus of the marketing. The ads made a big deal out of the EVENT rather than what made it successful: ROMANCE!!! Hardly any of the ads actually showed, you know, Jack and Rose swooning over one another. And American Reunion is almost like what an actual high school reunion's like: you're not really looking forward to it as much as just wondering what they've been up to all this time. Hardly any of the cast members did anything significant except perhaps Hannigan and Scott so it really did seem like seeing the "popular" kids in high school that really didn't amount to much.
  6. Still phenomenal for a first entry into a franchise in, you know, SPRING.I'm actually surprised at Mirror Mirror; I had a suspicion that it'd go for bust at $14M or less.
  7. Well, you can at least appreciate the honesty. But $60M would be nearly $20M higher than any of the Twilight films' second weekend so take some solace in that.
  8. Disney just can't seem to do sci-fi all that well. What the company can't seem to commit to is allowing their director to be the primary force of creativity in the film. Even though this is a property that's inspired a hundred years worth of sci-fi adventures, it was never a true passion project, just something that happened on the coattails of Avatar.
  9. These early updates have still been pretty on the money though (multipliers not quite).
  10. There's really no nice thing to say about John Carter other than "it could've been worse...".Its only hope is international.
  11. You know, if I were one of the Weinsteins, any of these past two weekend would've been the best time to really market the hell out of The Artist. I mean especially for Valentine's Day; they could've said "the most critically acclaimed romance in years!" and really hammer that point in. Still doing better than Hurt Locker but I was hoping for it to break out just a little bit more.
  12. Lionsgate has never been that great at marketing. If Warrior was released through Fox Searchlight or the Weinsteins, it would've probably broke out.
  13. Common rule of thumb I use with movies: don't ever overestimate tabloid actresses. Also another rule: don't expect a McG movie to break out.
  14. Or at least a good damn director. You'd think considering his first Oscar-nominated role was with Michael Mann, that would convince him but I guess not. He's never worked with a Scorcese, a Scott, or a Spielberg. Say what you will about Tom Cruise but at least he's worked with directors that would, you know, actually challenge him. That's why I'm almost positive After Earth will be a weak film because you're talking about a huge ego in Smith and a HUGE ego in Shyamalan.
  15. Well marketing did a good job in that regard. Hell, people I knew in the animation industry thought Miyazaki directed it so what does that tell you? It's a definite victory.
  16. Considering the small theatre count, it's actually going to make twice as much as Ponyo's opening weekend in one day and it's total gross in a single weekend and will easily be the biggest non-Pokemon anime opening. I'd say it's a victory for the studio, especially since Miyazaki himself didn't actually direct it.
  17. It's bizarre that companies for the longest time wouldnt actually put a straight-up romance for Valentine's Day Weekend. Romantic comedies, definitely, but never a straight up romance like The Vow or Dear John even though it can be an incredibly successful film. I bet if Notebook had came out Valentine's Day back in 2004, it probably would've been a gigantic box-office hit.
  18. The poor multiplier for Phantom Menace is the bad thing; it was the only film to drop on Saturday. I guess only the really devoted, and I mean REALLY devoted, all came on Friday. I can't imagine it having that great of legs.
  19. When my family got the internet around the middle of 2001, but I didn't join Mojo's Forums until about January 2007, which is strange looking back...
  20. I don't think it'll be that frontloaded; a good amount of the audience is likely families so it should be able to have a 3.0 multiplier. Maybe just short of $30M but certainly above $25M.
  21. I should've known Jay Z would help this movie, just as much as Jay Z helped out American Gangster. To be fair, No Church in the Wild is an awesome song. Although did anyone notice that the marketing kinda phased out Ryan Reynolds.I'm more so curious about the legs; will it fall short of $100M like The Book of Eli?
  22. ...Damn Denzel. The others don't surprise me but...DAMN Denzel. One of the more stunning openings in a LONG time. I wouldn't have thought that Phantom Menace would get $33M and be the THIRD one of the weekend.
  23. Great results, here's hoping next weekend does well too. Not expecting three $25M+ openers but weirder stuff has happened,
  24. Incidentally this is only going to fuel the Potter/Twilight war..."Haha Twitards, OUR leading actor's first lead role opened higher than YOUR leads' feature debuts!!"Still great that both are matching, and in the case of Woman in Black exceeding, expectations.
