  1. *If you exclude the mission impossible one or one of the absolute biggest movie phenomenon of the 2010 that was The Greatest Showman. Colin Farrell lost that status of kiss of death in supporting role a good while ago.
  2. This sound ridiculous by moment, almost illegal in California, how would an employer know the sexuality of is employee he hired (why would anyone would want them to seek that information). For studio movie it will be easy they will simply always have the D1 achieved clause of Audience development, marketing/publicity/distribution team are full of women and the film distributor and can always pass C2 I would imagine as well, making their hole slate eligible regardless of the actual movie released. At least they seem clear that it will not include international movies, but that seem a new hurdle for small movies and the danger to put a giant asterix on all future best picture with minorities even when they will get in on their own merit and if no good movie wasn't eligible anyway (people will not follow all those details).
  3. I think he wanted to make an high dynamic range version in the past: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2017/11/james-cameron-titanic-20th-anniversary-avatar-terminator-fox-studios-sale Like they did for Titanic: https://www.displaydaily.com/paid-news/ldm/ldm-in-brief/ldm-cinema/titanic-remastered-in-dolby-vision-hdr-for-20th-anniversary
  4. Looking at this (planned release): https://web.archive.org/web/20200225033906/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_films_of_2020 They still do in some genre, horror notably: A Quiet place 2 Candyman Purge 5 Woman in the window Irresistible King of staten Island Ghostbuster Bob Burger Free guy I Still Believe Infinite Man Hitman Wife Bodyguards Monster Hunter Conjuring In the first 3 for example, could have been a perfect mix of build in appeal (from the director or franchise) and not needing to do over 100M to be a nice success to build habit back/test the water. That said they could have speculated that horror wasn't a good idea (and many in the rest of that list could have got a disrupted post production and not ready).
  5. It does change the situation so much that you could be right (I had people doing it for UFC/Wrestling PPV in mind, but those you want them live right away and pirated feed tend to be unreliable and low quality, that not the same for a movie). Star Wars / Marvel would still have premiere party for people that do want to wait hours and to watch it right away in high Q, a lot of people watched Game of Thrones together after all on a legal HBO feed someone had/shared experience instead of pirating it couple of hours later and watching it alone.
  6. How are those previews + FSS numbers prediction and not after mondays ? Because I was really impressed to be that close to a never before event like that, I take back my impressiveness.
  7. For France they have a quite strict release windows law for SVOD: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/french-cinema-body-can-collapse-release-windows-covid-19-crisis-1285803#:~:text=On Friday%2C the French government, caused by the novel coronavirus. According to the law if the movie play in theater, it cannot play on Disney+/Netflix/etc,,, the next 3 years, maybe if a movie get a PVOD it also create some windows where SVOD is impossible that Disney want to avoid. https://variety.com/2020/digital/news/mulan-disney-plus-all-subscribers-no-extra-charge-1234757666/ According to this, they could have struct an exceptional deal with France exhibition market but theater refused. I would suspect something similar for portugal, skipping PVOD for regulation reason.
  8. Marvel-DC/Star Wars they would, Mulan during a pandemie you are probably right, but a group of young woman excited for this could disagree with that impression.
  9. A 50% from reporter drop would be a near 0% actual drop, I almost did not follow box office at all in months, but is there any indication that legs are particularly strong right now ? Daily drops and other movies do not seem to indicate that, I would expect really harsh "reported drop" even an excellent 30% drop in actual would mean a report 62% drop. Considering Sunday was boosted by an holiday monday a good 40% drop would be reported has a 66% drop. (my BO calculation are all rusty, my general point is that this weekend numbers are extremely boosted by a very week longs Canada released, many days in the US, holiday weekend), and ridiculously called OW, the drop should be extra harsh even with a really good actual hold.
  10. They can choose a location where a NHL like bubble could work (or be lucky), I would expect some crew of some movie to not get infected.
  11. Some I think are good example (Tarantino for example had a not messing around with Nazis and Brad Pitt comeback), but some of them like those considering that Seven was is second feature film and that Social Network followed a giant success, critics/box office/Oscars (Curious Case of Benjamin button), I am not sure those are good example. What was Cameron failure before True Lies ? Ridley Scott had so many success and failure over time that it is just how it goes and not in a reactionary response to any "flaw" I think, it is not like he didn't had failure before GI Jane.
  12. Trolls 2 was $19.99 for a 48 hours rental and was (at least spinned has) a success story, this is a much much bigger affair and a multiple month rental for $30, that do not sound like it should outrageous for the target audience (family), if it does that would be a big change in mentality during that time frame, a possible one but surprising. Single viewer sales will be a niche affair for sure at that price, but they are probably a niche affair for a theatrical release for a movie like that as well.
  13. Studios are own by media corporation that do not necessarily do what is best for the movie they release in mind (but the cable brand and now SVOD brand numbers) nor for the next 50 year's in mind, the first movie that would shortcut the window by surprise would have a big advantage of doing so, that does not mean that if every movie do it all the time that it would be on the long term a good thing. For example: https://etcanada.com/news/656219/the-king-of-staten-island-will-premiere-exclusively-on-demand-no-drive-in-theatres/ This is maybe the best for Universal VOD deals but not necessarily for the movie itself.
  14. I think that it is still a little bit in the air but apparently that a myth (if we do not call simple cheap surgical mask professional level mask), that show that both the spreader and receiver wearing a mask isn't superior to the spreader alone, even little surgical mask: A randomized trial found that healthcare workers wearing cloth masks were 13 times more likely to contract flu-like illnesses than those wearing surgical masks https://examine.com/topics/coronavirus-masks/#summary2 Wearing a mask is by definition not staying locked home, that said yes wearing it outside is a bit much, but if getting a virus mean a giant insurance claim for your company and your are paid millions for a job, taking extra precaution do seem reasonable to ask.
  15. That a way to spin this that is very disingenuous, because Showgirls is not the reference you use for the record of director that goes into a blockbuster SCi-fi, total Recall-RoboCop seem way more relevant, both giant success. I imagine it was perceived as a big risk, it seem to have been split in 2 with 2 studio sharing it a la Braveheart/Titanic: Sony Pictures Releasing (North America) Buena Vista International (International)
  16. If he is a fan I imagine he will not care about them.
  17. Chad deeply valued his privacy, and I wasn’t privy to the details of his illness. After his family released their statement, I realized that he was living with his illness the entire time I knew him. I am not sure he meant that he didn't knew anything about it, just not the detail.
  18. From what we know, he got diagnosticated (2016) after Civil War was shot and Boseman was already cast (2014 in the latest) by then.
  19. It is common practice for director/actor playing important character on big budget affair to pass medical test and give medical info to be able for the studio to insure the movies (enough common that when someone didn't get insured it is mentioned on the movie distribution contract). A bit like Charlie Sheen having Hiv being well known by high level Hollywood but kept secret until the Sony email got leaked, those kind of things could be known by a good amount of insider, medical and insurer staff without getting public. Healthcare personal, studio, reporter with access and insurer do seem to do a good jobs to keep those personal things confidential (Emilia Clarke, Sheen, Boseman). Standard insurance contract form for actor/director engaging in a production can look like this: https://wikileaks.org/sony/docs/03_03/RISKMGMT/Production/Forms/Cast/Allianz Cast Medical Certificate & Affidavit.pdf And is signed by them and a physician than examined them. I could imagine that everyone that employed him for major role since is diagnostic knew.
  20. Is it just me (or my screens ?) that find the quality of the compression of the trailers online to be lacking ? I tried many of them.
  21. The is a movie doing over $100M quite fast in China right now that seem to be able to reach 300-350M in a single market, that alone should make possible for a movie to get close to 500M WW (if South Korea and other major market like that fully come back online), maybe 500M in China will be possible again before the end of the year in China.
  22. Because I just went to box office mojo all classed the movie by opening weekend and used the total on that page. In more general imagine if Dunkirk get against a release this year and we compare to other movies legs to see how it was received when it played in theater, that would be logic to just count the first release.
  23. If we look at all the movies opening between 41M to 69.9M in the 2010s and we remove December release, the ranking multiplier wise look like that: A Star Is Born 5.02 How to Train Your Dragon 4.98 Gravity 4.91 Inception 4.66 The Twilight Saga: Eclipse 4.64 Despicable Me 4.46 Moana 4.39 The Croods 4.29 Bohemian Rhapsody 4.24 The Amazing Spider-Man 4.23 The Martian 4.21 Coco 4.13 Tangled 4.12 Ted 4.02 Dr. Seuss' the Grinch 4.00 Big Hero 6 3.96 Interstellar 3.96 Wreck-It Ralph 3.86 Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation 3.80 A Quiet Place 3.75 The Lego Movie 3.73 Dunkirk 3.72 Mission: Impossible - Fallout 3.60 Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted 3.59 How to Train Your Dragon 2 3.58 Brave 3.58 Ralph Breaks the Internet 3.58 Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation 3.51 Hotel Transylvania 2 3.50 Hotel Transylvania 3.49 The Boss Baby 3.49 Maleficent 3.48 Kung Fu Panda 3 3.48 Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood 3.47 Kung Fu Panda 2 3.47 Ice Age: Continental Drift 3.46 The Secret Life of Pets 2 3.41 Home 3.40 Mad Max: Fury Road 3.38 Ocean's 8 3.37 22 Jump Street 3.36 The Lego Batman Movie 3.32 Trolls 3.30 Ready Player One 3.30 The Conjuring 3.28 Men in Black 3 3.28 Bad Boys for Life 3.27 Ride Along 3.25 Megamind 3.23 Rise of the Planet of the Apes 3.23 Grown Ups 2 3.22 The Meg 3.20 The Karate Kid 3.17 Ant-Man 3.15 Shutter Island 3.12 Neighbors 3.06 World War Z 3.05 The Vow 3.03 John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum 3.01 Cinderella 2.96 The Peanuts Movie 2.94 How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World 2.92 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.92 Transformers: The Last Knight 2.91 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw 2.90 Cars 2 2.89 The Great Gatsby 2.89 Lucy 2.89 Cars 3 2.85 San Andreas 2.84 Taken 2 2.82 Ghostbusters 2.79 Divergent 2.76 Snow White and the Huntsman 2.76 Thor 2.75 Kong: Skull Island 2.75 Jason Bourne 2.74 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales 2.74 Captain America: The First Avenger 2.72 The Hangover Part III 2.69 Star Trek Beyond 2.68 Straight Outta Compton 2.68 Clash of the Titans 2.67 Pitch Perfect 2 2.66 X-Men: First Class 2.66 Pokémon Detective Pikachu 2.65 Shazam! 2.62 War for the Planet of the Apes 2.61 The Fault in Our Stars 2.60 Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald 2.57 Sonic the Hedgehog 2.52 Independence Day: Resurgence 2.51 The Wolverine 2.50 Dumbo 2.50 The Divergent Series: Insurgent 2.49 Prometheus 2.48 Fifty Shades Darker 2.46 300: Rise of an Empire 2.37 X-Men: Apocalypse 2.36 Jackass 3D 2.33 Noah 2.31 Godzilla: King of the Monsters 2.31 Green Lantern 2.19 The Nun 2.18 Paranormal Activity 3 1.98 Valentine's Day 1.96 If we would remove sequel or material giant fan base affair it would not look as good obviously, but still on the solid side. I think there is a mix of audience not being as enthusiastic but also that the OW was just giant for that type of movie, 1917 being the best comparable that we can think of, did a 4.3x with a under 40M start, that more the trajectory Dunkirk would have had "normally" to reach such big high (released more with the award season versus the summer and so on).
