  1. Phantom Thread January 25, 2018 12:30PM 30% Full Trailers: Don't Remember. The four women directly behind me were NOT having it. Laughed at the wrong times, talked a lot. One said: "That was cuckoo-cuckoo" as the credits rolled. Shape of Water January 27, 2018 12:30PM 100% Full Trailers: New Mutants (LOL) Couple laughs and here and there. Positive murmurs on the way out. Paddington 2 January 28, 2018 7:30PM 3% Full. Trailers: Peter Rabbit There were five of us: two older women in the back, a little boy and his mother, and myself. The older women laughed once or twice. The little boy announced to everyone that the "Movie was starting, because the lights went down." He was also very concerned/talkative during some of the more emotional moments. It was adorable. Winchester February 2, 2018 7:25PM 30% Full Trailers: Truth or Dare (murmurs of "that looks stupid" from behind me), Strangers: Prey at Night (murmurs) The theater was about 40 people and 90% of us were women over 25. Scattered laughs and startled noises throughout, with a couple of "Jesus Christs" at some jump scares.
  2. 1. Black Panther 2. Avengers: Infinity War 3. A Wrinkle In Time 4. Ocean's Eight 5. Tomb Raider 6. Rampage 7. Isle of Dogs 8. Red Sparrow 9. A Quiet Place 10. Annihilation
  3. This would literally be The Dream. I read in Variety and a few other outlets that the Academy members were going nuts for the film, and going out to the screeners in droves. Oldman is so over the top it verges on hilariously bad. You're not really immersed in the movie; rather going "YAAS, EAT IT" to Oldman's total commitment to chew every frame. Kaluuya is the exact opposite. His performance is subtle and layered. He and Peele created such a sense of dread, I was holding my breath the whole film. I can't speak to Washington and Chalamet as I haven't seen those performances. Out of the live action Hollywood films nominated this year, I only haven't see: Call Me By Your Name (I just can't bring myself to suffer through it), The Florida Project (Legit was in the theater for a week and gone), Roman Israel Esq (Didn't think it was getting nominated, so didn't trek out), and Victoria and Abdul (meh), and Wonder (Grandma saw it without me!).
  4. I have had a really terrible January -- my grandmother had an extended stay in the hospital, my beloved seventeen-year-old cat died, work is work -- and for 104 minutes it felt like everything was right in the world. This movie is utterly PRECIOUS and so kind. I loved the sense of wonder throughout ( I was BEAMING at the prison break!). Every character was important and mattered; and in the end, everyone got to have their shining moment. The script was wonderful, and the editing was so well placed. And then there was Hugh, Oh My Gosh. I hope he gets the BAFTA. He was such a blast to watch. And I want to know the name of the set dresser who decided to plaster Hugh's old headshots EVERYWHERE. They deserve ALL THE AWARDS. I had a giggle fit the first time we saw inside his house.
  5. Finally finalized my ballot and sent it in. It broke down as: (15) The Shape of Water (11) I, Tonya (9) Phantom Thread (8) Coco, Get Out, Thor: Ragnorak, Wonder Woman (7) Mudbound (5) Atomic Blonde (4) The Disaster Artist (3) Baby Driver, Girls Trip, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Justice League, Professor Marston & The Wonder Women, War for Planet of the Apes (2) Blade Runner 2049, The Foreigner, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, The LEGO Batman Movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi (1) Boss Baby, Colossal, Dunkirk, Ghost in The Shell, The Greatest Showman, Hitman's Bodyguard, Kong: Skull Island, Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri TV Series: Big Little Lies, Feud: Bette & Joan, The Flash, Riverdale, Twin Peaks: The Return
  6. I was referring more to Laurents disliked Sam Mendes' 2003 Gyspy Revival so much that he staged 2009's Revival with Patty LuPone. (Which was EXCELLENT. We got to see that live and she was a stunning force.)
  7. I just hope John Boyega doesn't get blamed for this underperforming. It looks fun (who doesn't like giant Robots v giant Monsters!), but that trailer is holding NOTHING back in terms of plot or spoilers, and it clearly lacks Del Toro's mastery. Doesn't give me a lot of confidence.
  8. Yup. Film is a visual medium. The film was about 75% voice over, or at least felt it. I could have turned my back, or been at house on my phone the whole time, and still gotten the same experience as watching the film. Good story from a good writer needed a way better cinematographer.
  9. I totally get the no love for The Disaster Artist. I just feel the Franco Scandal was the nail in its coffin. The movie plays way too much like inside baseball. It features a sweet storyline about friendship within the soul crushing nature of LA; yet, that core is wrapped around the insanity and lore of The Room. A lot of the comedy derives from knowledge of the source material. The people in back of me were quoting The Room to the screen during our TDA showing. I have a friend who said the exact same thing happened to him. The (BRILLIANT) teaser trailer was literally just footage of them filming the iconic "Oh, Hi Mark" scene. The Disaster Artist was an idiosyncratic gem that I doubt older Academy members would appreciate.
  10. I hope Shape Of Water and Get Out run the table. LOLs: - Armie Hammer is totally the Fetch of Hollywood - Logan for Best Adapted Screenplay - Martin McDonagh Denied Best Director YASs: - Rachel Morrison for Best Cinematography - Jordan Peele for Best Director - Daniel Kaluuya for Best Actor - The Big Sick for Best Original Screenplay - An Almost Post Shut Out - Shape Of Water leading the Nominations WTFs: - I, Tonya snubbed Best Picture and Hair & Make Up - BATB for Best Costumes. Belle’s dress was a travesty
  11. Fingers crossed for I, Tonya, Shape Of Water, Get Out, The Disaster Artist, and Mudbound. Everything else kind of melds together into Meh. Insane Surprises I Would Flip For: - Dee Rees for Best Director over Nolan - The Post gets shut out - Tiffany Haddish for Best Supporting Actress - Sebastian Stan nomination - Richael Morrison for Best cinematography - Coco for Best Original Screenplay Serious Questions: - Will the Franco expose topedo The Disaster Artist in the 11th Hour? - Will the Netflix overcome “its a VOD” with Mudbound? - Will Fox Searchlight abandon Shape Of Water for Three Billboards?
  12. Sorkin is a fair superior writer than director. At times the direction felt like I was watching an old West Wing episode. All the shots were efficient but not dynamic. That was the only thing stopping me from rating it higher. C+
  13. Solid and serviceable. The best part was the guy behind me going: “Oh, Wow! Oh. WoW. Oh WOW” during the train crash.
  14. I don’t know what I hated more: the movie, or my male friend mansplaining to me that my mortality was blinding me from seeing its True Art on the way home from the theater. This just exhausted me. I found it vile; everything was about was so racist and homophobic. Denise’s storyline was terrible. It’s 2018; stop using PoC characters suffering to advance White Character Growth. The flashback between Francis and the daughter was so troubling. That line about “I hope you get raped too” was just too much. My other issue: I could absolutely NOT get past the suspension of disbelief that Rockwell and Francis’ characters wouldn’t have been arrested or in jail half way through the film. Really? He can assault someone and throw him out the window, and no one presses charges? She assaults two students and, really, their parents didn’t lose their mind and report that? Don’t believe it for a second. We only went because it’s one of the last needed to check off for Award Season Watch. I thought Francis was serviceable but flat. I can’t believe Robbie has been losing to her all season. Insane. F
  15. the biggest shame is Arthur Laurents isn’t alive to immediately direct a rebuttal.
  16. Deadline: MoviePass Launches MoviePass Ventures: Subsidiary Will Co-Acquire Films With Distributors – Sundance
  17. That is wild. Maybe they were trying to put a Get Out. Knew they wouldn’t win leading so knocked him down to Supporting.
  18. I feel like whoever wins Best Actor is gonna have baggage. It is just the crop you have this year. Just got out of Darkest Hour. I see why the critics/awards are eating it up. I found it very showy and one-note. I still think Franco gave the best performance. It was so authentic and weird and sad. And I can’t believe I am saying this, cause he is not a fave, yet I am puzzled that Sebastian Stan’s name hasn’t been thrown around for I, Tonya. It was such a flawless performance that really captured the character’s frightening, manipulative, sociopathic nature. And if we buy into “all acting is reacting” I don’t think Margot could have had a better screen partner. For me it would be: Kaluuya - Get Out Franco - Disaster Artist Stan - I, Tonya And then waiting to see Phantom Thread to fill the other spots. I know that won’t be the list, but it would be a nice to hear the gasps from the audience if it happened.
