  1. Write up about the advertising for the movie: LA Times: "Inside Fox's strategy to market 'Love, Simon,' the first film of its kind from a major studio" And whoever came up with these deserves a Clio:
  2. My Mom loved this. I thought it felt like a Sci-Fi — Sorry, SyFy original I would watch at 2am on Saturday’s morning. Solid third act.
  3. To piggyback off this, @YLF Also check the actual box office if you run into a "sold out" on the website. I know my theater holds tickets for walk-ups. That's how I bought tickets for the TLJ the day despite it being "sold out" for weeks on the website.
  4. This isn't terrible! It's such a relief! Pros: Alicia Effing Vikander is perfect as Lara Croft. I was gagging the whole time. She's dynamic, completely owns that screen. I so appreciate and love that the movie allows Lara have range of emotions -- she's strong, and she's weak; she's stoic one in one scene, and on the verge of a breakdown in the next. It feels honest. She isn't an invincible superhero. She is just trying to survive this insane situation by pretending everything is fine, only to break down when alone. (Which was SO RELATABLE.) . I really hope this movie does enough to warrant a sequel. I want to see more of Alicia's Lara. Meh: Daniel Wu as Lu Ren - I can't tell if he's a Pro or Con. He's totally playing The Girl. Part of me loves that, and I love that he's just following her around to look hot and be super supportive. I chuckled. Yet, I really would've liked for him to have more to do! Cons: Pacing. I don't know if I'd call it slow, but it doesn't have that relentless, heart-pounding exhaustion you felt while playing certain levels of the video game. The lighting in the tomb scenes was garbage. Just because it's a dark tomb without light doesn't mean my screen needs to be black! Why is this still a thing! Video Game Nitpicks: This is all stuff that has no barring on the actual movie, it's just elements of the adaptation, I would have preferred to see done differently: I get it's a lot cheaper to basically have four main characters than ten, I just wish they'd kept in the original Endurance crew. Lu Ren is great, but Sam and Jonah would've been amazing. This film adaptation skews masculine. It would've been refreshing if they'd used Lara's friendship with Sam instead of Richard Croft as the emotional crux of the film. WHY DID THEY REVEAL THE TRUTH ABOUT THAT CHARACTER AT THE END?!?! That revelation was SUCH A BIG DEAL in Rise of Tomb Raider (aka the Sequel). I was totally floored. What a choice. Grading on a Video Game Scale: B
  5. Avengers: Infinity War Tomb Raider Love, Simon Isle of Dogs Ocean's 8 A Quiet Place Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! Christopher Robin Mary Poppins Returns Captain Marvel
  6. I was in Hall H when they premiered the Kick-Ass footage. One of the only times in ten years I've seen that room give a standing ovation for a non-Star Wars or Marvel celeb entrance, and only time for footage. The hype was crazy hot off SDCC and it opened to 19M. Scott Pilgrim vs the World was wonderful, hella geeky, and only opened to 10M. I'm glad that the fanboys are hyped, but let's remember they premiered it to its target audience.
  7. No joke, we went to a recliner theater and I feel asleep somewhere between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 for a good 5 or 10 minutes. It felt long for 90 minutes. The girls were fine, but everything Just felt so hollow. Pity this was Anton’s last roll. It was really nothing to write home about.
  8. A Wrinkle In Time IMAX 2D AMC Loews 34th 9:45PM 20% Teasrers: A Miracle Season (no response) Sherlock Gnomes (oh god no from the crowd) Solo (scattered murmurs) Love, Simon (scattered murmurs) Hotel Transylvania (woman in front said that loved funny) Crowd laughed at all of the jokes. Very engaged. Good showing.
  9. As someone who has been trying to travel from Maine to New York all day, I want to second that the weather up here is complete garbage if you aren’t in a city. Lot of trees and power lines down. I wouldn’t expect much from the Northeast/New England today or tomorrow.
  10. Tag yourself. I am the woman yawning on the poster. (Omg that placement is amazing)
  11. I didn't mean inconsistent, I meant old. As in, I don't think Spielberg's name is enough to get youngsters into the theater to see this. To quote Janet, "What have you done for me lately?" That was a threequel with a built-in female audience. What about RPO's marketing screams: "Ladies, new fandom alert!"?
  12. Someone finally said it! Spielberg is, without question, one of the biggest influences on pop culture in the 20th Century. He shaped the childhood of millions of Western Centric children and filmmakers. You can still feel that influence in their work when you watch stuff by like the Duffer Brothers and/or JJ Abrams. But it's the 21st Century. What has he done in the past ten years that would excite a younger demo (that this movie will desperately need to succeed) to go to the theater just because it's SPIELBERG? Maybe Jurassic World? His excellent work on movies Lincoln were totally for adults. And it doesn't help that it felt like he phoned in The Post. That could still be on people's minds. This movie feels OLD, and feels like it will only excite the 25+ Male Demo. If that's the case, it's wicked doubtful is will exceed 100M DOM. I also question the movie's marketing decision to focus on the homage/nostalgia aspect of the story, instead of the very timely and interesting theme of escapism in a dystopian setting. Makes it feel like a giant game of Where's Waldo instead of a real story.

  14. Respectively, I think the FYC lists are nice as a jumping off block; and if you post then now, people have two months to watch some of the films. (Like I had totally forgot about Galaxy Quest and apparently I need to watch the Sunrise / Sunset series.)
  15. This movie wasn't even on my radar, so I didn't know the plot: I genuinely smiled let out a 'YESS' at the Christopher Robin reveal. The CGI on Pooh is great. He looks like real teddy bear. Hayley Atwell and Mark Gatiss (ugh, what a problematic fave) should be fun. Totally works for the trailer. Only complaint is (A) Really, Disney, from the Studio that Brought You... And you pick Beauty and the Beast? I laughed. (B) God, Damn it Hollywood. Stop with that fugly muted color correction.
  16. Sat down and did a stream of consciousness, FYC of 100 movies (that I then put in ABC order cause of OCD). We will see how many make my actual list.
  17. It *is* the greatest bad movie I have ever seen, so, I think that a solid pick.
  18. Do the movie need to be theatrical release only, or can they be TV/HBO/Netflix originals?
  19. Her voice at the end almost sounds like a dub of Julie Andrews. It's eerie. No lie, I got chills. I'm pumped. Lin looks AWESOME, and the teaser is just enough of wonder without giving anything away.
