  1. But the thing is there are POC performances this year more deserving than some of the nominations listed. So they don’t have excuse to not have a diverse lineup. Other than having a preference for white people.
  2. Oscar nominations voting period closes today, do you think the shortened season will have an effect on how much the guilds and the BAFTA (+globes) will influence the Oscars? Oscar nominations are usually a couple of weeks after the BAFTA noms (and more later after the globes)
  3. god BAFTAs are such a mess this year Parasite missed on editing so it's not winning this (also missed on everything below the line, doesn't seem like it's getting Roma like support). 1917 misses on screenplay, Marriage Story only gets 4 noms, no POC in any of the acting categories (not even Jlo??? or any of the cast of parasite..) Irishman gets in everywhere but De Niro gets snubbed (do they like everything in the movie except the lead?? this happened with the globes and SAG too ). the good surprises were Klaus in animation and the lighthouse in cinematography. I liked seeing Portrait and For Sama in the international category as well but this seems like a mostly a meh BAFTA season. the industry love for Joker is insane
  4. I guess but WGA usually have atleast a 3/5 success rate of predicting the nominations. so 1917 could still sneak in. top 5 could be something like Hollywood Parasite Marriage Story 1917 Knives Out/The Farewell
  5. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/writers-guild-awards-unveils-film-nominations-1267113 1917 gets a WGA nomination, Oscar nomination is next! @lorddemaxus
  6. I agree with 1917 not being a true BP contender (it likely won't get anything above the line besides director). but Irishman still needs to recover with the guilds to makeup for the globes loss, otherwise OUATIH or Parasite will win picture.
  7. Spotlight won SAG ensemble. a lone WGA win won't do much.
  8. Irishman needs to make a comeback with a PGA win or a SAG ensemble to makeup for the globes loss but it still feels too optimistic to predict it would get either of those. OUATIH is the most PGA-y film ever and I think after the globes sweep it'll probably win there (ala Green Book of last year) and I think Parasite could win the SAG ensemble
  9. the fact that the HFPA (globes voters) watched Irishman in theaters and still gave it nothing shows they really didn't like it (they even snubbed de niro). while most Academy members will watch it on Netflix or screeners (if they even finish it).
  10. ye I guess but I'm still rooting for it cus 1917 has a better chance of dethroning Hollywood over Parasite (which prolly won't get director now).
  11. so now the race is between 1917, Hollywood and Parasite.
  12. @lorddemaxus if Irishman doesn't get drama now its buzz will mostly die, ASIB 2.0
  13. well when it comes to blockbusters. movies are a business product first art second. if you're a producer and you have $100M from investors to produce a movie would you go and spend their money on projects that likely won't turn out profitable? it's more reasonable to take risks on smaller films but when you're talking about 100M-200M mega productions the safer option will always make more sense from a business perspective.
  14. so they didn't go because they like Cameron? thanks for proving my point. (and I don't even dislike Avatar or Cameron as a director) Nolan made an unorthodox character light war movie gross 500M+ WW. if the same movie was made by someone else it wouldn't have made nearly as much. The same thing doesn't apply for James Cameron who only directed like 2 films since I was born.
  15. Titanic is fair but Avatar's success had nothing to do with Cameron's name as a draw, people went to see that because of the 3D gimmick.
  16. thinking casual audiences go to movies based on who directs them is more naive. (only exception is Nolan). Batman is more popular than Avatar as an IP and if whoever directs it makes something solid it'll make bank.
  17. assuming Cameron delivers (and has something in it worth watching other than visuals) I'm predicting 450M/1.2B
  18. https://variety.com/2020/scene/news/parasite-australia-aacta-international-awards-saoirse-ronan-brad-pitt-once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-1203456451/ 2020 AACTA International Awards Interesting win for Ronan, and I thought Joaquin would take this
