You'll be pleased to know that Scott's reuniting with John Mathieson for Gladiator 2, though if memory serves me right, neither that film nor their other collaborations were that much different.

Spielberg still shoots on film too for the most part, though he has gone digital for his mocap-heavy films (Tintin and The BFG were fully digital, while RPO used digital for the Oasis scenes and 35mm for the real world scenes).

A Verbinski Indy movie would've probably cost more than this one too, given the budget overruns of both his Pirates sequels and The Lone Ranger, and I've heard Lucasfilm hasn't been the best in managing their production costs either lately.
