Delayed again to July 20th. Maybe one of these days they'll actually go on sale. -
If Elemental had been priced similarly to Puss 2, it would definitely be looking like a success story. As of now, the holds are extremely impressive, but on a $200m production cost and assuming ~$100m in promos and advertising, it still has quite a way to go before reaching profitability. It has certainly done better than expected after the lackluster opening weekend, but I wouldn't yet be calling it an unqualified all-around hit by most means. That being said, I'm sure Disney is at least happy that some of its audiences are turning back around to seeing Pixar content in theaters, and it'll probably give them plenty of merchandising and ancillary revenue opportunities.

Pal of mine went to the movies today, and there were Proud Boys, literal Nazis, standing outside the auditorium for this movie and passing out pamphlets. Everything I've heard from employees seems to be that this movie has brought out the very worst customers imaginable, from mere inconveniences like people being unable to pull up their ticket reservations, to individuals being outright rude, then all the way down to those who are hurling conspiracy theories at the staff. Angel can say all they want about how their movie is apolitical, but it sure would be nice if they would shoot down more of this nonsense than just the "AMC is purposely breaking their A/Cs" crap. It says something when that was what they were more concerned about than QAnon and white supremacist groups backing the film, but I guess they're only concerned about pushing back against conspiracies that affect their bottom line. 😟

Still waiting on an exact date, but showtimes are populating, so it should be sometime next week. -
WGA/SAGAFTRA Strike Discussion Thread | SAG Ratifies Contract
misterpepp replied to Eric is Quiet's topic in The Speakeasy
They're all striking. The ones not making millions are the ones who need fair pay. Big actors striking helps to show solidarity. Studios wouldn't care if only smaller names were striking. -
This is something I'm kinda feeling. I saw the movie and greatly enjoyed it, but the promos did make it seem like it was "just another Mission: Impossible" in the same way that FX, TF6, and IJ5 all seemed like "same old stuff" for their respective franchises (although M:I7 was, of course, a far better made feature than those were). I think another thing people are overlooking is how important a good villain can be for action movies. Cavill was a terrific counterpart to Cruise in the previous installment and was played up heavily in the marketing, and if there's one thing I can say was a notable flaw with this otherwise-solid installment, it's that the villains are both weaker and not as big of draws to moviegoers.

This is actually on sale for most locations on Friday. Think there might've been a chain or two that put it on sale early as an error? -

Paramount posting what it made solely on Tue is odd, no? Usually they lump the early access into a full number. That seems to be what they did for D&D, 80 for Brady, and Transformers, with further breakdowns of what it made sans-EA. -

Strays new sale date is July 26. Gran Turismo on sale July 10. -
Additionally, many use that situation as a "boogeyman" of sorts to claim certain demographics (specifically, the ones they don't like) are involved. I've seen too many bigots try to validate their xenophobia by claiming huge swaths of immigrants are involved in child human trafficking, or using that as a means to ban people of specific nationalities from entering the U.S. Sure, it definitely happens and needs to be eliminated, but it's important to know that its existence is also used as a means to influence public opinion by a certain political party. ... And that's all I'll say on that!

Yes, some Dolby screens are switching back. -
I don't feel like starting long-winded arguments on this thread, so I'll say that I strongly disagree with some of the narratives presented here and leave it at this post. I've seen more evidence that things will work out OK for theaters eventually than that which points to the contrary. Overall revenue is still ticking upwards year-over-year post-reopening, the arthouse/specialty scene is showing signs of life (Past Lives is expanding nicely, Asteroid City's PTA this weekend was terrific), talent working in the industry continue to back movie theaters, the theatrical revenue stream still generates the most direct revenue for a single title out of all the windows (Yes, including PVOD/TVOD/EST, based on the numbers I've come across), and the theatrical model still gives movies more attention when they hit those later windows. I'm a firm believer that the quality and marketability are what's going downhill, along with costs that have ballooned far too high, and those are issues on the studio end, not theaters or consumers abandoning the model.
