  1. Yeah there's no Everything, Everywhere screenings at my local Odeon this weekend. Glad I caught the IMAX showing last week, this film was such a joy, shame to see it's not getting a proper release.
  2. That does sound very awkward lol. It's definitely more of a theme park ride for some. Tbh the fan stuff was my least favourite aspect of the film so I didn't mind the lack of response in those moments. What really gave me a kick this time around was the response to some of those surprisingly violent moments, a lot of shock in the room.
  3. I don't know how I was so tepid on this film the first time. This film ends with a zombie Doctor Strange telling America Chavez to believe in herself and her powers, followed by her clenching her fist and beating the shit out of Wanda. A moment that is played completely straight and not for yucks and freaking rules! It's everything I could ask for. And that little montage as Mordo explains dream walking, and we get all those fades and superimposing of Wanda reading the dark hold, and the music is just going hard. Bravo Raimi.
  4. This movie was more fun that I was giving it credit for. I think I just had my Raimi/horror expectations set too high the first go around (and a strangely unresponsive opening day audience). Still too light on character for Strange but it's a solid MCU outing, occasionally (especially in the third act) elevated to something more by Sam Raimi's direction. It's nice to see him back.
  5. Remember to check out Everything Everywhere All At Once if/when it releases near you! It rules.
  6. This was top notch. Radiates sheer joy and filled with propulsive energy. In the same family as an early Edgar Wright movie or a Phil Lord/Christopher Miller joint with the plot of The Matrix. It's whip smart. Fully takes advantage of it’s multiversal concept, using it to explore deeply human concepts of 'what if my life could have been more?' and 'does any of this matter when there's infinite universes?'. But also uses the multiverse to just have some good old fashioned fun gags, this film was hilarious, my audience was dying from laughter. Hands down has some of the best action of the year as well. Most importantly it wears it's sentimental heart on it's sleeve and never loses sight of the relationships at the centre of it's story. It's an incredible balancing act. Kudos to the Daniels for pulling it off.
  7. I'm looking forward to going back to Pandora but that teaser needed more of a hook. Didn't relish enough in the idea of welcoming you back, it was very melancholy.
  8. There's a destroyed universe with lots of floaty cars, bricks and building. It's one of the floating cars in this sequence, it gets a fairly prominent shot.
  9. Wow, the critics really threw out a lot of hyperbolic statements about how much of a Raimi movie and horror movie this was. While both show up intermittently (more so in the 3rd act) this is still a Marvel Studios film for better or worse. You inject a little bit of flavour and everybody loses their minds. That being said I had enough fun. It largely gave me what I needed. Some laughs, some serviceable action, cheeky character interactions; the usual. When Raimi does show up to do his thing I had a smile on my face and he elevates some sequences beyond the usual MCU standard (as well as sneaking in some surprisingly gory moments). He's never given the time to build an all encompassing atmosphere, the film is a non stop train to check off all the boxes it needs to. Wanda is served the best, given a lot of dedicated screen time and America Chavez is a delightful addition. I was left somewhat tired of some of the usual motions of these films. The fan service and the teasing of future projects feel worn out and have overstayed their welcome. The lack of finality to character journeys across the board, and the film holding it's cards to play them 5 movies down the line, it all serves as a reminder of the TV format that Marvel is so taken with. Remember when you could get proper meaty character arcs in a single film? They usually do a pretty decent job at making you feel as though you've had a satisfying meal but I was left a little empty with this one. It might be because I went in expecting something more distinct but I can feel the Marvel machine catching up to me.
  10. I second this i've nearly had a heart attack every time I see the thread title The thought of this getting delayed again
  11. Just got out of a screening for Everything Everywhere All At Once. It's a real "Now follow that!" movie. Slightly regretting the decision to see Strange tomorrow, maybe should have given it a week. Back to back multiverse stories might be an overload.
  12. God I hope these people aren't just overhyping how much of a Sam Raimi movie this is. I think I've just been sold on doing opening day IMAX if they're telling the truth.
  13. APRIL Movies Current Releases The Northman - 9/10 - Riveting, awe inspiring action sequences, this is a muscular film in every aspect and make no mistake it’s a Robert Eggers picture through and through. The Worst Person in the World - 9/10 - Also one of the best I’ve seen this year, photography was stunning, especially the colour grade. Driven by a complicated lead performance revolving around finding oneself. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent - 8/10 - Full of heart. A bromance comedy at the centre of it. I loved Pedro Pascal, he’s adorable. Apollo 10 1/2 - 7/10 - A charming exercise in nostalgia but doesn’t offer much more. Moonfall - 5/10 - Was Halle Berry de-aged for the entire film? Did anyone else see that? This was ridiculous but also kind of enjoyable. Deep Water - 2/10 - I’m gonna be honest I could not finish this. It’s technically proficient, all the actors are doing a decent job but my God it’s so dull. I was basically watching it in 10 minute increments over a week because I could not do it in one sitting. Older Releases Boyz n the Hood - 9/10 - More touching, intimate and tender than I ever could have expected. Just a well balanced film that feels honest in what it wants to say. Raising Arizona - 9/10 - Hilarious and delightfully directed. The Coen’s instil this film with a chaotic energy that keeps it lively and on it’s toes. Holly Hunter is especially a joy too watch. Casino - 9/10 - It’s Scorsese firing on all cylinders what more do you want! The 4K transfer was stunning, one of the best. A Simple Plan - 8/10 - Raimi comes in with a soft, light touch, shows his dexterity as a director. What a well written script as well, very Coen-esque premise. Billy Bob Thornton disappeared into his character. Escape From L.A. - 7/10 - Outside of some janky effects work, this film was an absolute hoot. It’s Carpenter going full Rodriguez, and I had a big smile on my face throughout. Pet Sematary (1989) - 7/10 - A surprisingly clear focus on the theme of death, lead actor is meh. Black Rain - 6/10 - Gorgeous to look at, a little too monotone. Switches from pulpy noir to 80’s action movie in the final act. Karaoke scene was A+. Daybreakers - 5/10 - Really wanted to like this, the world/plot is very interesting, but has an overuse of bad CGI and the ending cops out for sequel set up. Four Brothers - 5/10 - Some decent action and fairly watchable but it’s way too corny and unrealistic. Also Mark Wahlberg at his most Wahlberg. Cujo - 4/10 - Focuses way too much on family drama I could not care less about. The last half hour features the best stuff with Dee Wallace doing an excellent job but doesn’t capitalise on that aspect of the story. Jaws 3 - 4/10 - Basically Jurassic World with awful special effects, which kind of makes it the most watchable Jaws sequel. It went down easier than the others. Jaws 2 - 3/10 - Why do I want I want watch 2 hours of the same bloody Mayor not believing Chief Brody. We don’t even get a scene of comeuppance or realisation in this one. It’s incredibly frustrating. Jaws: The Revenge - 2/10 - Have never seen a franchise stoop this low and resort to milking so bad. TV Barry S3 - 9/10 - Great opener, was worried there would be some wheel spinning but doesn’t look to be the case. Outer Range - 8/10 - Watched the first two eps, decent mystery. Twilight Zone meets Yellowstone. Brolin always kills it. MoonKnight - 7/10 - Going well so far, pretty par for the course with these Marvel shows, Issac is having a lot of fun. Last two episodes really picked up, lets see if it sticks the landing.
  14. Avatar was also the sort of film where if you isolate certain clips and show it to someone, they're like 'yeah this is absolutely CGI'. But when you sit down to watch the film as a whole, the more unfinished scenes and the world just blend together in way you don't notice. I think the average viewer also just does not care about these things, I mean everyone's pretty content with very janky compositing and CGI that crops up in Marvel movies to the point where they keep getting nominated for Oscars as well. The last hurdle for the film for me personally is the mix of live actions elements with the CGI. The first film very smartly avoided doing that often but I'd like to see them constantly putting themselves up against real footage just to prove they can pull it off.
  15. Raimi's pretty capable of adapting to what a story (or in this case franchise) needs. Just watched a A Simple Plan for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It's directed with such a soft touch and focus on performances you wouldn't even think it's a Raimi film. I think the difference is the Marvel sandbox is one where his visual style fits perfectly with big, fun summer blockbuster so hopefully enough of that makes it's way through.
  16. I thought this was the best episode yet. Delivered on what I was looking for from the show and gave it the much needed emotional depth that's been missing. Is it Legion/Mr Robot lite? Sure, but for Marvel that's pretty decent.
  17. January Scream Parallel Mothers Nightmare Alley Belfast Licorice Pizza February Jackass Forever Death on the Nile Uncharted Belle Dog March The Godfather - 50th Anniversary The Batman - IMAX The Batman - IMAX X Ambulance The Lost City April The Worst Person in the World The Northman The Northman The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Total: 20 I did purposefully avoid seeing Fantastic Beasts and Morbius because I knew I would be filled with regret at having made the trip which always happens and I never learn my lesson.
  18. Everything Everywhere All At Once is getting IMAX screenings on the 4th May (Before Doctor Strange eats up all the screens the day after).
  19. I think this film was sold on the absurdity of it's premise and 'THE MOST NIC CAGE MOVIE TO EVER EXIST' but it actually shows a surprising amount of restraint. It's kind of an actual normal movie. It doesn't get too bogged down in references, the comedy is pretty situational rather than gags or zingers. You're just watching two bros hanging out and having a good time together with a little bit of action thrown in and some tender moments. Pedro Pascal is the MVP, he's unbelievably charming and funny in this movie. Dude can do anything. Cinematography was surprisingly decent as well, nothing flashy but all on location (only one green screen car scene which is a miracle in this day). I very much enjoyed it, there was something about it that reminded me of a type of action comedy you'd get in the 90's but I do wonder if I wanted the balls-to-the-walls version of this movie.
