China's run is coming to an end. Must have legs in Australia
now that the big movies are all out in that country, meaning
no more competitions.
After that, tt all depends on Brazil & Japan to lift this beyond $400M.
With China, it can reach $750M easily.
Look at EX2 & GIJ2, so-so action movies for me
but big success in China, how did that happen?
FF6 is miles better than those junks.
I think the success of this movie is beyond the fact that it is a zombie movie, or any other specific genre.
Those swarming scenes shot in a realistic world gives the audience something edgy, contemporary and genuinely frightening. One look at the Jerusalem scene from the trailer is enough to drive curious folks out of the comfort of their PG rated TV shows. My only criticism is the lack of any real story. The movie is just one long chase. And other than the intense siege in the Middle East, the movie is lacking in other stand-out scenes. I am excited by what the makers would come up with in the sequel.
With scattershot release pattern, it's very difficult to make predictions for this one, yea?
MU opens much later in certain territories....But $300M WW after 2 weeks are very good
3. The Heat (Fox) Week 1 [Runs 3,181]Wednesday $5.2M, Thursday $6.3M, Friday $8.6M, Saturday $9.2M3-Day Weekend $24.8M, Domestic Cume $86.3M
================================================================
This should do around $140M. Don't really like it, other movies deserve more viewership,
but anything for 2013 $100M club.
Pixar has been steadily making hit after hit for 18 years.
Illumination is an upstart. They do exceptionally well
with Gru/Minions but what else they can do?
Did Pixar release a "SqueezeToy Aliens" spin-off
after the wild success of TOY STORY?
Illumination got talent but a spin-off is a sign
that they have nothing else under their sleeves.
They only have one concept with Gru/Minions. Let's see if they can prove themselves beyond the title of "another one hit wonder."
LORAX is based on a previously published work, a popular one. Pixar is all original stuff, folks. They have been an inspiration to many animation houses in Hollywood. And they have been making animations for almost 20 years. Consistency, something that Illumination needs to show.
The box office seems to be against traditional heroes. MoS, a nice guy superhero is great but underperforms. WHD, an old-fashioned DIE HARD movie flops hard. LR an even more traditional hero is flopping around.
BTW I was at a screening of MoS, and some of the audience actually cheered when Zod's army beat up the US army and went "Oh no!" (followed by a burst of Minions' giggles) when Zod dies in the hands of Supe. I mean I am not a sentimental guy but the world may be truly f-ed-up.
