  1. TF3 made $12M in Italy. It is a pretty good number but TA & HOBBIT made more than $20M there. So giant robots may not be an Italian thing. re: box office data I sourced this data from mojo. They may not update their old stuff so somebody correct me if they have more updated/correct data
  2. Come on, we all know, the book contains specific reference to Patient Zero originating in China. I am telling you the Media Bureau or something like that checks everything, anything that they deem offensive to China. China may contain flaws in their system, and there are many things in their laws that I personally don't like, but they have the right to ban a work of fiction which does not portray their country in favorable light. They have the right to even ban any work of fiction just because. But having said that, the Chinese are missing quiet a good chunk of revenue by refusing WWZ playdate because I bet this is the kind of movies young Chinese moviegoers love to see on the big screen. Judging by the impressive run of STID, the Chinese is ready for thought-provoking scifi genre. I won't be surprised WWZ earning $50-60M ala MoS & STID.
  3. One of the villains played by a Chinese-Singaporean actor Chin Han, is a Chinese international criminal who holes up in Hong Kong. The movie makes specific reference to China "not extraditing" the criminal which paints a picture of a Chinese gov't that tolerates harboring criminals (which is not untrue, but so are many reputable countries around the world). Chinese authorities do not take kindly to that idea. This is THE reason why Dark Knight is banned.
  4. Vietnam will be the next big thing in South East Asia. It may dwarf Thailand even
  5. I don't know if this is intentional on the part of local distributors, you know, divide & conquer because American movies are seen as competitors
  6. I hope they are done with a Trilogy of Rebooted Bond and get back to the larger-than-life Bond that made THUNDERBALL so popular, you know, exotic gadgets, large scale battle, insane unrealistic action. The first three of Craig's Bonds were supposed to emulate the popular Bourne series with all that super-realistic shaky cam and low tech action. Enough of that, time for Bond to go crazy again
  7. PR success in Korea should be a great indicator of its success in the rest of Asian markets
  8. Wolverine should not be a factor. That character is really getting old I want this to be successful
  9. They need to build the story around an engaging human character like the way TF did. I don't quite like Shia Le Bouf, his idea of acting is to hyperventilate excessively. But GA seems to attach themselves to this kid while the giant robots do their thing. GODZILLA is a one-note force of destruction, it has no story without real human characters. Then again look at WWZ: minimal plot, audience came anyway.
  10. I like what Universal did with OBLIVION but other than the Gru/Minions and FF franchise which is coming to an end, what else they got? BOURNE LEGACY is a non-starter & JPIV seems to be in trouble with so many delays and date shuffling. How many more Minions movies they could do? On the other hand, Disney could afford to be non-creative & innovative. They are on autopilot for at least 10 years with Pixar, Lucasfilm & Marvel Studios as part of their team.
  11. I always thought WWZ has an amazing trailer. I predicted to open huge, $50M low end, $75M high end, but dropping precipitously like PROMETHEUS to less than $110M. I never thought this could do more than $150M.
  12. There is a strong possibility this one will break out in Japan, $40M is not out of reach, judging from past disaster movies. Spain will give a strong number too.
  13. The Koreans love their zombies. That's an excellent number for a non-sequel original movie
  14. MoS, MU, WWZ all end up around $20M... No standout this summer. HOBBITS & CF to the rescue
  15. The SEARS tie-in is so blatant in MoS, I almost choke. How much does WB get for that? I also heard that studios get higher, much higher, percentage during the opening weekend, something close to 80% or even 90%. That's the reason studios are pushing for earlier opening day in the week. TF2 opened on a Tuesday I think. As the week progresses, the theaters get more and more. Is this the reason why studios go in and go out quickly? (more than before in the 80s when movies play for a whole year, especially the popular ones)
  16. MATRIX is a "thoughtful" scifi but it is also a bad-ass kungfu/action movie. The action in MATRIX is what sells it. So not really comparable. I just never thought it would be so successful in China. That's all. China is a market where GIJ2, EX2 and DH5 earn their biggest share of overseas market (meaning: undemanding audience)
