  1. Movies opening this weekend (August 15-17): THE FAULT IN OUR STARS: Damn! I have been trying to get tickets for this movie to watch it tomorrow but almost all of the goddamn tickets are sold out for tomorrow. I think that is a sign that the movie will score big numbers this weekend. Not that is going to knock Guardians from its number one spot but it will be serious competition for its main audience: Teenagers and Young Adults. The book is really popular from what I am seeing on twitter but wether the movie will be frontloaded for its established fan base like in the US or actually attract other people who never knew the book even existed but still interested in the movie will be seen on its legs, witch I think is going to be pretty decent. ER CONDE SUELTO EN HOLLYWOOD: This local movie is actually a parody of movies like Beverly Hills Cop where the venezuelan comedian Benjamin Rausseo, also known as Er Conde Del Guacharo plays a venezuelan police that all of the sudden gest transferred to the US to investigate a robbery of a "Valuable Prize" using tecnics that he learned in his town mixed with really crazy situations. This comedian already made two movies like this, the first one was a parody of Indiana Jones ($3,579,383) and the second was a parody of James Bond ($2,281,387). The first one was really bad but apparently from what I saw on the web the second one was actually pretty good (I did not saw the sequel). So I have to assume that Benjamin Rausseo learned from his mistakes in his two previous movies and made a better one this time. Good will from local movies like Papita, Mani, Toston and Libertador plus the marketing with a good looking trailer might help the movie to get some decent numbers. Reception in Opening Weekend will tell if Er Conde Suelto En Hollywood will actuallt get good legs.
  2. The show is starting to get better IMO. BTW, HBO just renewed the show for season 2 http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/leftovers-renewed-second-season-at-725249
  3. Guardians Of The Galaxy opened really well this weekend at the Venezuelan Box Office. The opening weekend is higher than Thor: The Dark World ($1,397,306), Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($1,309,107) ,The Amazing Spider Man 2 ($1,524,322) and How To Train Your Dragon 2 ($1,645,988) (Not counting the sunday preview) but its a little bit below Rio 2 ($1,711,134) and X Men: Days of Future Past ($1,790,877). This is an amazing result considering that Guardians is not an established franchise like all the movies already mentioned. Given the nature of the month of August, Guardians should follow the path of X Men and pass the $10 million mark. Libertador had another excellent weekend and held really well against Guardians considering that most of its competitors where seriously hurted by the arrival of the new Marvel movie. The movie is really hot right now and it should cross the mark of Papita, Mani, Tostón as the highest grossing local movie of all time. How To Train Your Dragon 2 had a decent drop against Guardians. Its following a very similar path to X Men so a 12-13 million final gross should be no problem. And alas, Maleficent was finally knocked out of its hot luck by dropping over 40%, its hardest drop yet. Guardians probably took most of its screens and the appeal to kids and families took away a lot of its audience. So far it has earned $23,8 million, I believe it still has enough gas in the tank to reach $30 million with Summer Vacations if other movies dont hurt it much. Blended continues to have ridiculously good holds and just reached $5 million. Seriously, the local distributor of WB was really stupid by putting Blended in such a few number of screens. Speaking of ridiculously good holds, Deliver Us From Evil had really good one this weekend, something that only The Conjuring achieved last year because horror movies are ususally front loaded. Of couse the star power of Edgar Ramirez is the main draw of this movie so it is very likely that Deliver Us From Evil surpasses The Conjuring´s $3,618,768 if these kind of holds continues. And wow, what a dissapointing performance from Planes 2, dropping over 50%. That is a really harsh drop for an animated movie in a market where animated movies are THE hot ticket. Clearly Planes 2 will not get near the $4,758,012 that the first one made. And finally X Men Days Of Future Past nearly reached the $12 million mark. The 50% drop was obviously a hit from Guardians but is finishing its run with grace. The final gross should be $12,5 million.

  5. Loved it, Rocket and the Awesome mix Vol.1 where the best stuff in the movie. Quill´s mom sure had good taste in music. Also, after that end credits scene I really wanna see a Howard The Duck reboot movie made by Marvel Studio. Another Lucas mess that Disney could fix.
  6. How To Train Your Dragon 2 held really well on its third weekend staying above 1 million dropping just 10.2% for a total of $6,674,000. The better hold might be explained for the nature of summer vacations in the month of August where all children, teenagers and young adults in universities are out giving the boost that Dragon 2 soarly needed to stay strong at the BO. If Guardians Of the Galaxy does not hurt it much then it should not be a problem to reach more than $10 million when all is said and done. Libertador rose on its second weekend by 5.7%. The increase can be mainly atributed to the extremly positive WOM and the strong appeal of venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez, not to mention the high production values never before seen in a local film. Like all local films with extremly good WOM like this movie, Libertador has the potential to stay in the Top 5 for a month or two like Papita, Maní, Tostón did just seven months ago. And wow, Maleficent really is unbreakable at the BO its like the movie has a life of its own and refuses to leave. Another almost $700k weekend for a total of $22,775,962 on its TENTH Weekend. Un-freaking-believable. As of now the only movie that can do serious damage to Maleficent right now is Guardians Of The Galaxy next weekend but at this point it looks like Maleficent has become some sort of a Japanese-Frozen run like phenomenon that cannot be stopped by any movie at all. $25 million should be a piece of cake with a chance of a $30 million final gross. Blended is still having a ridiculously good run at the BO due to the lack of screens and the high demand for this movie, Adam Sandler is clearly still a powerful draw to venezuelan audiences in terms of comedy movies, if the movie keeps having flat weekends like this it should get $8-9 million total. As expected, the summer vacations is helping Planes:Fire and Rescue to save some face after the pitiful opening weekend it had compared to the first one. The real question is if it can hold the punch from Guardians Of The Galaxy considering that the Marvel movie its just as appealing (if not more) to the little kids. Maybe it can match the total of the first movie, but not much more than that. Deliver Us From Evil had a really good opening weekend for a horror movie, $392k. This movie is also starred by Edgar Ramirez along with Eric Bana so releasing the movie right in the middle of the hype of the new Libertador movie also starred by Ramirez was a stroke of genius from Sony. Now the question remains if the WOM of Ramirez draw power alone will help the movie to get a little push to prevent the usual frontloadness from horror movies. And finally X Men Days Of Future Past was another movie that held really well this weekend with $362k for a total of $11,419,004. It will probably finish its run with a $12,5 million total gross.

  8. Holy Guacamole Marvel is truly on fire right now. This should have been released in July. But August is cool too.
  9. Nevermind... I just wanted so see some movie beat the shit out of TF 4 Worldwide,
  10. Actually yes, ticket prices are really expensive, its like $20+ in most of the multiplexes I go if you convert the local currency to dollars (in 2D of course). That is why many people go to Popular Monday because all monday the price for all movie theatres is 50% off. And there is also Thursday 2x1, get two tickets for the price of one. And a student special offer from Thursday to Friday where if you show your University ID the price of the movie ticket is 25% off. At least we have options
  11. Because since the film is an international colaboration between Venezuela and Spain, its gonna be released later on in Spain and many other Latin American markets, including in the United States in August in the form of a limited release. By releaseing the film in various countries its gonna be profitable.
  12. For the 1200th time this not following the renaissance era, this is following the PIXAR golden age era. Frozen is Nemo and BH6 is The Incredibles. Makes sense since Lasseter was involved both the PIXAR golden age and the current WDAS revival.
  13. Rio 2 in dollars, Papita, Mani, Tostón in admissions.
  14. Wow, Libertador´s opening weekend is the biggest in the history of Venezuela for a local movie. With the kind of reaction I have been seeing on Twitter and the typical leggy legs for local movies are any indication, Libertador will bring Papita, Mani,Tostón down. How To Train Your Dragon 2 had a similar drop like X Men on its second weekend, maybe Libertador took away some of its adult audience but it should have a stronger hold next weekend because August is usually a strong month for this type for movies so Dragon 2 is stil on pace for a $10 million dollar final gross. Impressive holds from both Maleficent and X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Angelina Jolie´s movie oficially crossed the $20 million mark and Bryan Synger´s movie officially passed Captain America 2 in Venezuela. Blended is getting near $3 million, impressive. Planes 2 opened lower than the first one, something that never happens with animated family movies in this market but expected given the competition. Should still have summer legs until Guardians premieres on August 8. The heavy drop from Rio 2 was totally because Planes took screens from the movie but Fox should not complain, $15.6 million in this market is kind of a big deal. Overall a very good weekend.
  15. 355 Dom + 675 OS : 1,030 WW A healthy increase from Inception domestically, and a bigger increase OS from Dark Knight Rises because of Nolan´s name and McConaghey recent star power.
  16. If done right, Dragonriders of Pern could be their next decade-dominating franchise like Harry Potter was for Warner Bros. I heard the books are really good.
  17. That actually made laugh a little bit. It´s not as bad as I thought it was gonna be. Might check it out.
  18. That scene where the GR lady was killed by stones was really brutal and hard to watch. Fuck, not even Game of Thrones had a death scene so fucked up as this one.
