  1. Ah yes, the first Harry Potter. I followed Japanese box office back then, but I forgot if it had previews or not. It's interesting though that preview are getting rare these days.
  2. If I remember correctly, that number includes previews, which was about half of it. It's the same with the other ¥15b+ openers. For example, POTC: DMC made ¥900m+ from previews, and another ¥900m+ on its official opening weekend. Then they add them for its OW number. I think Howl's Movie Castle has the actual biggest 2-day OW (excluding previews) of all time, with ¥1.47b. But I could be wrong.
  3. Wow Kenshin! I watched the anime when I was a teenager, so I was so excited when I heard they're gonna make the live action movies. The previous one, The Great Kyoto Fire Arc, was just released here this weekend. I saw it and enjoyed it very much. Made me wanna see the next one so bad. So I thought, hey maybe in Japan the third one could do ¥1b+ for its 2-day OW, but that would be crazy. Turns out it wasn't that crazy after all. lol Btw the one I went to was a sold out show, on the biggest screen in that theater (which is one of the biggest in this country). Rurouni Kenshin (we know it as Samurai X) is very popular here in Indonesia, and I've heard a lot of talks about it since weeks ago, so this successful opening isn't that surprising. The crowd seemed to love it, so I expect the WOM will be great too.
  4. Just want to add one country. In Indonesia, Avatar was beaten by HP:DH1, MI4, Skyfall, and FF6. And one local movie I think. But It's a little bit unfair, because Indonesia has been growing as a market since 2009. In 2009, the #1 movie of the year made $6.6m. In 2013 it's $15m.
  5. Wow Doraemon! Never thought it would be this big. The CGI looks weird, but apparently people don't really mind about it. But I'm actually interested in it, especially the story. I hope it will be released here. Btw I saw Detective Conan movie today. It was just released here this week. It was a sold-out show, almost didn't get the tickets. Detective Conan is pretty popular in Indonesia and this is the first movie that got a theatrical release here, so I was not surprised by the excitement. With this result, I hope they will keep releasing future movies.
  6. I'm sorry for the very late reply. Thanks for the explanation. Yes, it will be released in Indonesia this month. Blitz Megaplex, a movie theater chain here, has been releasing Korean blockbuster movies for the last 3 years, like The Thieves, Miracle in Cell No. 7, A Werewolf Boy, Secretly Greatly, Miss Granny, Snowpiercer, etc. The last one I saw in the theater was The Suspect, which was released here 2 months ago. I think I'm gonna see Roaring Currents. I like Korean movies and it's easily gonna be the biggest movie of all time so I just have to see it.
  7. Wow at Roaring Currents! When I saw the trailer at the theater here I thought it was gonna be huge in SK, but not this huge. Will The Host's record for local movie be finally broken? Btw, is the movie itself any good? I'm very interested to see it.
  8. Because as long as it stays at the theaters, the money still comes in, hence we can still expect box office numbers however small they are. I think that's what it means with "興収記録に期待したい".
  9. I think it says that it will still be playing at the theaters throughout August, so we can expect box office numbers from it. Corpse can correct me if I'm wrong.
  10. It's still having the best drop in the top 10. I'm still thinking 60m+ and maybe a little above 70m. It will have summer weekdays and Obon holiday to help its legs. Oh and I knew Godzilla would have a good opening. People kept comparing it to Pacific Rim and nobody listened to me.
  11. It's been a while since my last visit to this thread and wow a lot of surprising news. What happened to Pokemon? It's been declining for the last few years, but everybody thought this one would increased. It declined further instead. And Marnie opened lower than I thought it would. I expected more like Arrietty than From Up on Poppy Hill, box office-wise. And wow Frozen! Already the 3rd best selling DVD of all time in its first week of release. That's crazy! Btw, Frozen and Maleficent really saved Hollywood movies in Japan this year. Around $320m for Hollywood movies from these two alone. And we still have 5 months left. I hope Godzilla breaks out. For the sake of summer box office too.
  12. But Imagine Dragons do appear in a lot of soundtracks for blockbusters. That's actually interesting.
  13. I see. I can't believe I just learned about all this, and I've been following Japan's box office for years. I only check that thread occasionally though, so apparently I've missed a lot . And thanks Ray for the explanation. Yeah, typhoon is always awful. I've experienced it myself once. But I think nobody here actually lives in Japan, so we're all okay in that matter.
  14. Ah I see. That makes sense. I'm not following Pokemon so didn't know about that.
  15. Yes. They almost always in the yearly top 10, sometimes even top 5. These are the numbers for the last 10 movies: 2013 - ¥3.17b 2012 - ¥3.61b 2011 - ¥4.33b 2010 - ¥4.16b 2009 - ¥4.67b 2008 - ¥4.80b 2007 - ¥5.02b 2006 - ¥3.40b 2005 - ¥4.30b 2004 - ¥4.38b I don't know what happened to the last 2 movies though. They usually make more than ¥4b. FYI, the 5th highest grossing film so far this year is Detective Conan with ¥4.05b.
  16. Where is this doll shop? I was looking for a Frozen doll or other Frozen related stuff for my friend's daughter's birthday. Although I'm worried her parents might already buy her one . Karaoke here does have the most random songs. I've seen unreleased songs on the list, like leaked songs that are not included in the albums. I think they got them from youtube. I'm not even sure if that's legal lol.
  17. Been busy with work lately. And world cup . The hours that I spent to visit this forum, are now used to watch the games, or to sleep early. So you're in Indonesia right now? Believe it or not, I still hear Let It Go everywhere lol.
  18. I don't think marketing is the problem. It has a potential to be huge with 240 million people. But the number of theaters and screens are still extremely low compared to that population, and piracy is a huge competition for movies here. No data for DoFP in Indonesia, but I'm guessing around what it made in Malaysia & Philippines, or slightly bigger because WOM was great here. The numbers for action/superhero movies in Indonesia are usually similar to those countries.
  19. Wow I haven't visited this forum for a looong time. Told you Maleficent would be big. I'm thinking at least $50m total. Very interested in Godzilla's OW in a couple of weeks. I hope it's a success, for the sake of Hollywood movies in Japan. That's true, but you forget that in Japan, Frozen is not just any movie. It's making $240m+. It's a rare phenomenon. You can't compare that to its performance in other countries. Also, it's not because they love Frozen, but because the Disney/princess hype from Frozen made people there interested in Maleficent. The trailers and promos were attached with Frozen. And when it's attached to something as big as Frozen, it's hard for people not to notice it. So yeah, I think Frozen's huge success really helped Maleficent, especially with its OW.
  20. That's a great number for Frozen. Noah is strong on weekdays. And 300 bombs.
  21. And I repeat for the umpteenth time: rental. And it's also having a humongous presales.
  22. It was on TV, and also Frozen has one of the highest pre-orders for DVD if I remember correctly, so obviously people in Japan know about it. What happened in Spain (or in the US) doesn't necessarily reflects what's happening in Japan. Yes that movie in Spain didn't fall because of DVD announcement (and it might not have any impact in the US), but that doesn't mean in Japan, Frozen didn't fall because of that. There are facts that lead us to the conclusion that it is likely the DVD announcement has some kind of impact to its box office in Japan.
