Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Recommended Posts

There are two systems of reporting numbers in India:

1. Trade figure - By adding up all the collections reported by various distributors, multiplex owners etc.

2. Producer figure - Reported directly by the producers and considered 'official' for reporting in international media etc. They are generally 5-10% higher.

The problem with producer figure is that they are not reported regularly. Only the first couple of weeks are reported and that too only for major films. For smaller films or films that flop, producers don't bother giving any number whatsoever.

An ever bigger problem is that there is no transparency. Producers can report any number they like, and there would be no way to verify it. Trade figures are however accessible to everyone and can be easily verified.

Producers claim that Trade figures are not able to count all the numbers and the money from some theaters from some remote parts of the country get missed, that's why their numbers are higher than Trade figures. This logic would make sense, as long as the difference is small. However, sometimes there are some absurd stituations like Krrish 3, when the difference was much higher.

Therefore, for the sake of consistency, comprehensiveness and reliability, I prefer trade figures.

The Krrish 3 thing was ridiculous. No one could agree on a single figure for that movie. To add to that, the movie pretty much flat out sucked, Rakesh Roshan couldn't seem to decide whether he was making a superhero movie or a sappy family drama. Despite great production values and decent VFX, the movie is probably the one that left me really really angry when I came out of the theater, so much potential squandered away. I could have written a better movie honestly.

I have seen the film yesterday, first day 1st show.. Overall it was good..But the comedy scenes are superb and with some good emotional content.. And i never felt the movie is lengthy, they managed it perfectly.

Comedy will keep this movie alive for sure :)

There are a few well constructed comedy scenes. The "Sattar minute" speech repurposed as "Saat minute" was awesome. The scenes where Shahrukh keeps badmouthing Deepika were well done as well. Honestly though, any scene with Abhishek and Boman acting over the top were probably the best comedy scenes of the movie.

Tax rate varies from 30-35% depending on which areas are strong, as different states have different rates. But tax rates are applied on the nett value.

For example, if the tax rate is 30%, and the ticket is of Rs. 130, then nett gross would be Rs. 100.

100 + 100*30% = 130

You are doing like

130 - 130*30% = 91

which is incorrect.

Got it.  Yeah I've always just used ~35% (depending on interiors vs. metros and SS vs. Multiplex), but I've done the calculation  65 rs net / .65 = 100 rs gross.

Yeah whenever shah rukh & deepika touches there will be fire.. and the last one they show is with Boman having a drink &  it gets fired up when shah holds deepika's hand.. Yeah well constructed, perfectly timed scenes i'd say..

And Abishek is a laugh riot, he nailed it along with Boman.

One thing I did find bad from a storytelling perspective is that the movie treats hacking like magic. Every single thing with technology involved is hacked through. Just feels like a bad crutch the filmmakers relied too much on.

We are relied on technology .. Hacking everything, well that seems pretty lame.

Initially I used to do that too. :)

But a few years ago, I paid attention to my ticket and the billing was something like

Ticket : 125.00

Tax : 25.00

Total : 150.00

Delhi has 20% entertainment tax.

For all india quick calculations I use a multiplier of 0.75.

So Abhishek Bachchan now finds himself in the 2 movies with the biggest openings of all time, but I don't think his drawing power or star power is affected in the least by either of those movies. He will struggle to attract audiences without a bigger star to lean on, Bol Bachchan, Dhoom 3 and now HNY all had him playing second fiddle to a bigger drawing actor.

30 crore+ on Saturday. Producer figures will be 2-3 crore higher. This is slightly lower than Dhoom 3's Saturday.

Sunday jump would be the key for how far it can go, but 200 crore looks safe at the moment, and 250 crore out of reach.
