Bang Bang was a big bore, deservedly ignored by audience, whereas War was entertaining and got the audience to become a blockbuster.

It didn't help that Knight & Day itself is a slog to sit through.

Umm BB was not ignored at all. Audience did come to watch it and it made solid money. It's just that people were expecting it crack 200 cr easily due to super hit album, action movie and HR+Kat jodi. It is just that Haider took away some of the multiplex audience. That and the remake tag of a Hollywood movie did not help it.

Well people need to watch his movies to appreciate his talents.

Which they don't, so.....

Because Indian audience was not mature enough to understand. Even the critics didn't understand no smoking movie lmao. It doesn't help that most of the mainstream movies are brainless over the top masala movies so audiences are so used to that. But times have changed now and hopefully people open up. But seeing how movie like kashmir files is sent to film festivals for award contender is hilarious and sad.

Let's compare soleley with War as both had Hrithik Roshan in lead with similar kind of movies.

War made more than just Solid Money.

War had Joker to deal with, which had much bigger impact at Multiplexes.

Bang Bang didn't work at box office simply because it didn't had good reception among people.

Always the fault of Audience.

People not coming to theaters means Audiences are at fault, ok Onve or twice maybe they ignore real good movies.

But three times, four times, five times..... Your entire filmography, maybe then you need to look beyond audience.

Bang Bang had 1.75cr ffs and War had 2.11cr. So not much difference between two, considering a bit of market growth from 2014 to 2019.

That Massive audience didn't translate to theaters na.

It's like saying we'll appreciate your stuff, but won't pay to see that in theaters.

I think the issue lies here. People didn't appreciate his movies at all (back in those days). Also he had to face issues with censor board all the time. They would almost always delay his movies and sometimes didn't even allow them to release. Another great example would be Tumbaad , which has been best horror movie which came out of India but it didn't do much business.

You know Bang Bang! is considered a solid hit when the director was handed the keys to YRF's spy universe despite BB not being from YRF. Also, BB made 180 crores in 2014 which isn't bad by any means. I don't think anyone expected it to surpass Kick that year, it was peak Salman in a mass-y action role lol.

That being said, BB is more re-watchable than War. Even War wasn't completely original as it rips-off from Bond, MI, FnF and War(2007) with Statham and Jet Li. It was just a two hero film done well in Bollywood after ages.

you will be surprised to know the dearth of good directors in Bollywood. there is a reason why Bollywood is doing so poorly compared to South. South is far far ahead Bollywood in terms of talent and skill, Bollywood was just the one that was richer.

With things getting even money wise and North opening up for watching dubbed content, they are blowing Bollywood apart.

It did 140. It was hoped to do 180, if it had done that, would have been considered a SUPER HIT.
