Film Critics Awards 2013 (Winners in 1st post - I'm bored...)

Recommended Posts

Guys, that whole 'American' thing was mostly for fun. There are plenty of acceptable examples I can think of of why a non-American would be living in Michigan (none of which he thought worth bringing up). Hell, I was originally going to question what not being American had to do with anything. But when life hands you a contradiction like that on a silver platter, I'll be damned if I'm not going to take it.

I mentioned it in case you think I'm biased against Ghibli films for being non-American. It happened to me before. And to answer your previous question, yes, I have seen the movie without English dubbing. (I had my friend from school watch and translate it for me). The Academy snubbed every Ghibli movie since Howl's. And those movies were better than TWR and received very well by critics. Even when the year was weak for American animation, no Ghibli movie got nominated. Gee, what could have possibly changed this year for a Ghibli movie to be nominated?

And to answer your previous question, yes, I have seen the movie without English dubbing. (I had my friend from school watch and translate it for me).

Forgive me for being sceptical but I have multiple issues with your story.

Problem No1: There are only three possible ways you could've seen the film. Either you saw it at one of the screenings it had in America (where it would've had been in English sub so you would've have needed your friend), you watched during its run in Japan (an explanation I have many many issues with) or you found a low quality camera rip and your friend from school was, for some reason, perfectly willing to spend hours of his free time writing a translation of a two hour movie just for yourself and (presumably) a few other people. Either way, a low quality rip with a low quality translation (unless your friend is a professional subtitler) may not be the best indicator of the film's quality.

Problem No2: You seem rather unwilling to go into detail about exactly why it's a bad movie or at least why it's worse than other Ghiblis.

Problem No3: If you've already seen the film, then it makes some of your earlier posts seem rather odd in context. Especially this one.

Seen it or not, the movie will obviously be getting an unfair advantage given how impartial the critics are (sarcasm).

So you'll forgive me for not explicitly trusting you on this one. Now, if you can provide me the link you used to watch TWR and the translation (since I suspect your friend must've written the translation down) then I will happily admit I'm wrong, but until then I'm staying sceptical. (Note: This is in no way an ingenious ploy to get to watch TWR early, since I can't find a single copy online)

The Academy snubbed every Ghibli movie since Howl's.

So that somehow justifies them snubbing this one?

And those movies were better than TWR and received very well by critics.

Um.... TWR is very well received by critics as well.

Even when the year was weak for American animation, no Ghibli movie got nominated. Gee, what could have possibly changed this year for a Ghibli movie to be nominated?

I'm not arguing that it being Miyazaki's last film has increased its chances of being nominated/winning. I'm arguing against your rather ridiculous ideas that its been given an 'unfair advantage' or 'it shouldn't be nominated' or 'it's getting too much attention' as a result. Despite your assertions, if critics thought it was a bad film then they wouldn't have nominated it, even it was Miyazaki's last. I admit I haven't seen it but, considering Miyazaki has yet to make a poorly received film, I really don't find it much of a stretch to believe critics liked TWR because it was a good film.

well after more than a decade of awards season behind me i try not to care too much  about results if i don't have a horse in the race and so far all i've seen from list of hopefuls is rush/gravity/the butler

and frankly only rush has savign grace in my eyes out of those 3

gravity was good i won't deny that but not good enough for me to want to talk about for weeks afterward , heck i haven't given the film a thought since

when you think about it nothing really happen apart from her spinning around in space until she finds a way to get back to earth but it was well done for such a minimalist plot

same for the butler ,i haven thought about it !

last year i was so psyched over ARGO i was always defending it and talking about it and my 2nd fav was LES MISERABLES this year pretty thin...

i need to get cracking on screeners coz otherwise i won't see anything anytime soon , i might as well be living on pluto!
