Might be worth pointing out that Pixar movies often have a better track record at the box office than the movies from WDAS. Also, I feel like the fact that Moana 2 initially started off as a Disney+ series before being retooled into a film might potentially be a red flag?

Still, if Universal intends to move this, November 8th, is right there.

It doesn’t matter. Moana 2 doesn’t need to be good (look out if it is though), the same way Frozen 2 didn’t need to be good.

Could be but this would be a pretty big gamble on Universal’s part. Certainly the door has closed on Wicked smothering Moana. It seems like Universal put this here hoping to kill another WDAS original and that plan has now gone sideways. Where Wicked is set to suffer the most is losing out on the family audience. In another spot, this could do well with families, but placed here, those families will opt for Moana instead.

Wicked is one the main family options on Broadway, along with The Lion King and Aladdin. Pricing plays a factor for live shows, a difference from moviegoing, but Disney has shown a newfound willingness to play the discount game with IO2. Why wouldn't they pull out all the stops for Thanksgiving to crush any competition? Maybe Universal will do a ticket deal of their own but it would likely be a distant second. If that means Oppenheimer money I'm sure Universal would be thrilled, but that's not the easiest thing to accomplish.

FWIW no one even knew of Moana 2's existence (the Disney movie slated for Thanksgiving was an unnamed title) until early February...when this began its marketing campaign. So technically, this claimed the holiday weekend first.

Everyone is avoiding early November this year given what's at stake with this election (which will naturally overshadow everything else). That's apparently why Venom 2 moved up a few weeks.

Doctor Strsnge and Trolls did just fine the weekend before the elctions. And they were just as toxic as this year’s.. Even Arrival did well opening a couple days later. That reasoning is so silly.

It probably is silly but everyone's more anxious these days. Some of that can be attributed to social media brain rot I'm sure, but also this is the first time we've had a leading candidate with multiple criminal convictions levied against him, so this might be more of a unique situation.

That was during the “Trump can’t win…right?” period. More people realize the consequences and what’s at stake in 2024.

I think Jan 6th and a what a certain someone did in that election aftermath has everybody more on edge than either the 16 or 20 election leadups and aftermaths

Best date now is the week before Thanksgiving like what all THG sequels and near all Twilight movies had if they insist in November. 2nd week will have a soft drop with Thanksgiving.

It would go up against Gladiator, but that will be a guy movie while Wicked will be a girl movie, so impact shouldnt be much with counterprograming.

The others have already touched on why this election is entirely unprecedented and different from 8 years ago (too many people in 2016 didn't realize elections have actual consequences and aren't some fancy popularity contest that the country throws every four years until it was too late), but I suspect even sporting events are going to mostly avoid scheduling stuff around that week to avoid "distraction attempt" status.

But we're veering a little too much in political discussion so that particular topic has now been fully covered.

I have another theory: Taylor Swift starts touring North America again around that time, and people probably gonna be devoting a lot of disposable income to that, especially this movie's target demo

Agreed, but studios still are noticeably avoiding the beginning of November like the plague. Nothing on the 1st, nothing on the 8th and only the DOA Red One on the 15th. It's really weird.

She's done with the US portion before the election.

Still going to Canada afterwards, and there might be more people actively considering a move there if things don't go the right way that month
