The Stingray

The Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of the 21st Century | Deadline Nov 17 (REVISED, 2 days earlier!)

Recommended Posts

Science fiction definition: Science fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginative content such as futuristic settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life.

Total recall (2012) is set in the future, has a gravity lift, robot armies, implanting artificial memories etc etc. I think it definitely qualifies.

Here is my top 25.  I know Stingray wants some of it to be a mystery, but I don't really think my list will matter all that much.  I doubt many of the films will make the over all list.  So here it is, maybe this will spark some of you into adding some of these to your list.

1) Knowing
2) Transformers
3) Unbreakable
4) The Fourth Kind
5) Rise of the Planet of the Apes
6) Revenge of the Sith
7) Inception
8) Matrix Reloaded
9) Contagion
10) Vanilla Sky
11) Transformers 3
12) Moon
13) War of the Worlds
14) The Manchurian Candidate
15) Cloud Atlas
16) Her
17) Into the Storm
18) Gravity
19) Dawn of the Dead
20) Avatar
21) The Mist
22) Minority Report
23) Terminator 3
24) The Hunger Games Catching Fire

I really wanted to only pick films that I felt were 'true' sci-fi films in the term.  So no Gravity, Superhero flicks (which I count as fantasy), I also tried to limit the blockbusters.

1.Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

2.Children of Men

3.Snowpiercer

4.Donnie Darko

5.Wall-E

6.Her

7.District 9

8.Moon

9.Looper

10.Sunshine

11.The Butterfly Effect

12.Star Trek (2009)

13.The Host (2006)

14.Rise of the Planet of the Apes

15.Source Code

16.Serenity

17.The Fountain

18.The World's End

19.Solaris

20.I Am Legend

21.Avatar

22.Contagion

23.Idiocracy

24.Chronicle

25.Equilibrum

Also how are you vetoing the films? cause I notice while Revenge of the Sith for Example isn't listed at the top of the IMDB page as Sci-Fi. below the title it says Genres:  and list a couple more and it does include Sci-Fi.

Tele we gotta make sure Europa Report gets on the list. Great little film.

Decent flick, but hardly Top 25 material, imo.

Didn't even know there was a Genres tab further down IMDb pages. You can use that for reference as well. So, Sith is in.

It wouldn't be high on my Top 25, but it's definitely a better movie than some of the inevitable appearances, plus it would encourage people beyond the 5 members who did see it to check it out.

I saw it, I liked it. I wouldn't put it on my list though, if I even do one.

Well maybe I would, since I wouldn't want to put the likes Pacific Rim either...
