I wonder which movie will be the one to have all the rapturously rabid Martian fans do a 180 and say, "I want this to beat The Martian...The Martian is so overrated...It owes its success to [*insert lots of factors except the movie actually connecting with audiences*]...

Are Martin Scorcese or Clint Eastwood planning to direct a space/sicence fiction-ish epic soon?

Clint Eastwood already did.

Whatever Nolan does next, I'm guessing.

Though I'm pretty comfortable saying The Martian is not the greatest sci-fi film of all time right now

The re-entry scene in Gravity got me more emotional (and still does) than anything in The Martian. And I really liked The Martian.

Definitely, the re-entry made me tear up the 5 times I watched the movie, every damn time. That sequence alone speaks volumes how we were invested in her character, how her character arc was so well done.

Nolan won't do a scifi space movie next. He loves killing off wives in new, exciting genres

Yeah, these "exclusive" one week early IMAX runs aren't really working for the studios. They should stop since the low openings are actually spreading negative publicity.

I don't think there's much "negative publicity" except for us who follow box-office.

Everest just plunged this weekend upon losing IMAX. That is a big drop for a movie which was pretty well received by all accounts. Guess the depressing ending didn't help at all (despite it being based on a true story), and the lack of any major money shots to include in the marketing campaign definitely hurt. Around a 45M finish domestic looks likely.
