I don't think Victorian Age horror is the issue. The trailer never looked scary. As soon as those awful CG ghosts started crawling on the floor and reaching out for people, horror fans checked out. People will go see a horror movie if it looks scary, regardless of setting.

But thanks GDT for making studios think Victorian horror = flop!

What has Del Toro ever done to make anyone think that he could do big budget horror?

The biggest loser here is the poor Mia Whatchamacallit, who dropped out of Carol to do this.

Charlie Hunnam also said the reason he backed out of 50 Shades of Grey is to do this movie as well

That movie wasn't directed by Del Toro, tho.

The complete 180 they did on promoting the movie over the past couple of weeks was interesting. They went from trailers and posters designed to make it a horror movie to everyone involved going "It's not horror, it is a gothic romance". Interesting marketing tactic from Universal and the people involved.

Hot? She's kinda pretty at best, in a cold pale pasty kinda way. Excellent actress, though (loved her in Tracks and Kids Are All Right).

She's hot to Ethan because we all have different taste.

The TV spots were still selling a horror movie. It were the actors and director that said it was a gothic romance.
