Void for years?  If anything, it's more relevant in the mainstream than ever.  The only reason you don't like RT is cause some superhero movies are rated above Avatar and it makes you triggered.

Even Shrek was based on a book, only perhaps 3-4 of the sws films are original (TFA AND R1 completely unoriginal)

 

There are two ways a sequel is unoriginal,

 

1) It is based of a book/comic/tvseries

 

2) It doesn't add try anything new and mimics the first film for that easy $$$

 

Would you call T2 unoriginal, I think not. Would you call Iron Man 2 original? i think not.
