Skyfall was the outlier as everyone has said over and over. SPECTRE is just the first of the "new normal" for Bond now.

Of course Skyfall was an outlier, who argues that? Doesn't change the fact that Spectre is an outlier in the complete opposite sense. Stop trying to justify the film's DOM performance as if something didn't go awry people. It would be the exact same as arguing something didn't go remarkably right for Skyfall, yet I don't see anyone arguing that.

Why should I take 10m off for IMAX? Money is money.

We reserve WWW threads for significant bombs. Somewhat disappointing domestic performances don't really qualify... especially if OS performance is robust.

Because I have not now nor ever been referring to the film as a money losing bomb. The threads are called what went WRONG. Not why did it lose money/bomb. Something went wrong domestically. Period, the end.

In which case you can talk about it in the SPECTRE thread, or which current Weekend thread is appropriate. We aren't going to make a WWW thread, that's all. The reason for this is that in recent years we've had franchises that significantly drop in terms of domestic performance but more than make up it with their OS grosses: TRANSFORMERS 4 and PIRATES 4, to name but two. SPECTRE is not going to reach the heights of those movies but it's nowhere close to being worthy of a WWW thread.

I wonder if Bond will stay a 2D franchise forever. Someone mentioned this in the weekend thread (can't remember who), but since Bond plays older in the US, 3D wouldn't work well here. Still it would be a way to inflate the gross.

It does skew older.  78% over 25 and 30% over 50 during the opening w/e

3D is really dying in Europe where Bond is strongest and it did very % wise on PLF and IMAX in the US so I don't think the lack of 3D really hurt that much in the US

Quote

it earned $8m in PLF screens as well, which means that Spectre earned $17.1m (23%) of its opening weekend total in large-format venues.

And is there a particular reason why we're combining OS and DOM? We tend to separate them for everything else on this board. Otherwise we would always just be referring to WW when we talked movie grosses. Clearly that's not the case.

In terms of WWW threads, because we felt people were running amuck and creating them at the slightest hint of under-performance. When it comes to the big blockbusters, which are very specifically aimed at a global audience (to the extent of coordinating with countries for cross-promotional purposes like Bond did with Mexico and Transformers with China), it seemed odd to create threads targeting something like domestic performance as representative of "what went wrong" when clearly the goal was to reach a mass global audience (a goal that most of these movies were successful at).

Again, if you want to talk about domestic under-performance compared to past admissions, or compared current overseas performance, or whatever, that's totally cool... but just do it in either the particular weekend thread or the movie's main thread.

I doubt SPECTRE is gonna have the same legs as the reviled QOS.

It already is. With actuals the movie just had  the same horrid Sunday drop as QoS. Not to mention QoS had virtually no major competition  in sight that year. How exactly is Spectre supposed to fend off MJ2, TGD, Peanuts, Creed, and SW and not take a hit?

Transformers 4

Pirates 4

CraigBond 4

Spider-Man 4

Shrek 4

Middle-Earth 4

In other news, Mockingjay part 2 is set to be the biggest bomb of the year. :p

But if a movie is mainly aimed at international audiences then nothing has gone "wrong" if it doesnt do amazingly domestically.
