Star Wars is operating with much bigger numbers so it is harder to look at past weekends for guidance but only Sherlock Holmes dropped above 33% on the same weekend back in 2009 and that was in its second weekend of release rather than 3rd.

Indeed, the sunday drop on Jan 3 is gonna be vicious Like in 2009 for instance: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate=2010-01-03&track=avatar.htm -40 to 50% all across the board, except Avatar of course. Anything above 40% for Star Wars would be hugely incredible, if not downright impossible. But that's Sunday though, there's still Friday and Saturday which can surprise!

That isn't really how it played out in 2009 though when the dates lined up exactly how they did this year. Two movies in the top 10 increased on this coming weekend, 4 movies (including Avatar dropped by less than 10%), another movie dropped by only 15%, Alvin and the Chipmunks in its 2nd weekend of release dropped 28% and Sherlock Holmes also in its second weekend of release was the only movie in the top 10 to drop over 30%.

This isn't 2009 & it's going to start dropping a lot worse than Avatar (which lifted SH, Alvin higher over the holidays & that can't be debated). Thanks for perspective but it's not relevant really other than dates being the same.

Jandrew
So when studios are closed for these holidays, does that mean no production is going on either? Or do just execs get off while the other peasants have to work?

But if you read behind-the-scene materail or watch it, they often mention to take a film break during X-Mas LotR beside being partly short on time via Peter Jackson ... lets say constantly new big ideas still closed down at least once for X-Mas. One of the didgital guys worked during that time on own time on the crash of the tower (I guess he got the time and money afterwards) = all in the extras (but I've read... that many many times, also for TV-series...) If time is short, I guess the people building the stuff for the movies might still work

It varies, though, if we had major deadlines we'd be working (aside from mandatory holidays).
