I watched The Conjuring 2 on opening night on a sold out screen. It was amazing and terrifying. 

 

I watched Light Out on a 1 PM show completely alone. It was also amazing and terrifying.

I still wish I had my crowd report from seeing Disturbia on opening night back in the BOF days. No joke, at one point whenever we saw the blood of a person getting killed by Evil Neighbor David Morse splattered on a window, some dude yelled "OH MY GOD DID YOU FUCKING SEE THAT?!?!?!" You had to be there.

The worst horror theatre experience I've had was with the first Conjuring. It was just me and a family with mom, dad and their two kids with their young daughter about 7-8 completely terrified and actually having to leave the movie. The son on the other hand seemed to enjoy it.

Yeah, there were multiple families present when I saw each of the Conjuring movies. Granted, they're about as light as R-rated movies can possibly get (to the point where I'd even argue that the majority of PG-13 horror movies are more violent), but taking little kids to horror movies doesn't sound like the kind of decision-making that puts someone in the running for Parent of the Year.

When I saw Lights Out two amazing things happened at once.

 

In that scene where you see an outside view of the house and all of the lights suddenly turn out, no joke, I jumped a bit and my phone just fell straight out of my pocket and made the loudest sound ever.  You could hear so many people trying to hold back their laughter because of how unexpected it was...and then to top it all off, some guy next to me just shouted out "shit's about to get FUCKING REAL."

 

Something about the way he said it made the entire theater laugh so hard.  Perfect tension breaker for what had been a very tense film.

 

And yeah my phone was okay.  Cases help

Since he is checking OC, I am guessing the differences are IMAX, 3D, PLF, Matinee prices, premium seating in 2d, premium seating in 3d, Island Cinema charges (which are downright crazy).

 

Way too many formats to watch a movie in, and a lot of reserved seating theaters charging differently for different screens (LaZ Boy seating, Stadium seating with couches etc.).

Exactly, who wants to be the guy that brings their kid to an R rated movie. If it's light enough and you think they can handle it wait for home. My parents had no problems with me watching movies like T2 but rarely would they let me see an R rated movie at the theater. I mean there was a mom that stayed all of Sausage Party with her son who was probably 10-11. I felt awkward for the both of them.

RESERVED SEATING REPORT

 

There will be a reserved seating report today.   The theaters are located in the entirety Orange County California.  There is 10 theaters to collect information from plus an additional 3 theaters that reserve seats for IMAX or RPX.  406 show times are to be recorded from 11:00am to 11:00pm.  4 shows already happened between 10:30 and 10:45am that were missed.  Also, numerous shows after 11:00pm are happening that will not be recorded.  Previously, a movie selling out Friday night lead to additional showings with the cancellation of show times for older films.  I will not mention this, just show results.  An observing note to keep in mind is that the prices for reserved seating are usually VIP or premium price in some regard.  Therefore, per screen averages will be jacked up and it will be hard to correlate between this and the actual per screen average for the other 3,000+ theaters.  Show times will be missed.  Errors will be made.  If I can get 400 out of 406 show times, that will be a win.  One last thing to keep in mind is that reserved seating does not show last minute walkups.  The information taken will be recorded anywhere between 10 minutes to 2 seconds before the actual start time.  Once the time has passed, online reserved seating is no longer available.
