Webslinger
Yeah, the Eastwood trivia is definitely a technicality. Even before American Sniper's jaw-dropping opening, Eastwood hit nearly $30 million with Gran Torino's first wide weekend. Granted, Gran Torino benefited from the word-of-mouth tied to its limited run (where it had accumulated $11 million from a peak of 84 locations), but American Sniper still would have been a monster if it had gone wide right out of the gate (after all, it was only in four theatres for three weekends prior to the wide rollout). Nevertheless, it's still a great start for Sully.

Webslinger
Great start for Sully. I thought that even $30 million would be an impressive reach heading into the weekend, so to see it go so high is quite impressive. It also debuted well ahead of Hanks's last two well-reviewed wide releases, although it has the benefit of not going head-to-head with a much larger film aimed at adults (Captain Phillips faced Gravity, while Bridge of Spies was up against The Martian and a smattering of other, less successful adult-oriented offerings). When the Bough Breaks had a ho-hum opening when compared with Screen Gems's #1 openers in this slot in the previous two years. Then again, its concept didn't seem anywhere near as marketable. Don't Breathe held up okay. Blair Witch will take a big chunk out of it next weekend, but it should still be able to finish over $80 million. Suicide Squad has stabilized nicely. I hadn't even heard of The Wild Life prior to this week, so if anything, I'm surprised that it didn't fall under $1,000 per theatre. Sausage Party's odds of crossing $100 million are officially shot.
