FRIDAY 10 PM: It’s still very early. My sources say this four-day Presidents Weekend box office is starting out very competitive with Sony Pictures’ 3D comic book adaptation sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance narrowly in first place Friday. But today’s order likely will change by Monday night with Sony Pictures/Screen Gems’ holdover The Vow battling for #1 another weekend in a row with Universal’s Safe House. What is clear already is that those strong Valentine’s Day sneak previews aren’t helping Fox’s This Means War today and it’ll fall behind Warner Bros’ holdover Journey 2: The Mysterious Island by Saturday. When Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, and Tom Hardy can’t get to $20M even over the 4-day holiday, something is wrong. I happpen to think the public is fatigued with romantic comedy, even if this one had a lot of action, and is choosing romantic drama for a change up. And Disney’s The Secret World Of Arrietty will be this long weekend’s big flop:

1. Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance 3D (Sony) NEW [3,174 Theaters]

Est Friday $7.2M, Est 4-day Holiday $24.5M

2. The Vow (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 2 [2,958 Theaters]

Est Friday $7.1M (-51%), Est 4-Day Holiday $28M

3. Safe House (Universal) Week 3 [3,121 Theaters]

Est Friday $6.2M (-53%), Est 4-Day Holiday $27M

4. This Means War (Fox) NEW [3,189 Theaters]

Est Friday $5.1M, Est 4-Day Holiday $17.5M

5. Journey 2 3D (Warner Bros) Week 2 [3,500 Theaters]

Est Friday $4.4M (-32%), Est 4-Day Holiday $24.5M

9. The Secret World Of Arrietty (Disney) NEW [1,522 Theaters]

Est Friday $1.3M, Est 4-Day Holiday $7M

FRIDAY 1 PM: Rentrak is having difficulties with hourly grosses and that put a pause on analyzing matinee numbers. But it looks like this 4-day President’s Holiday weekend will end up strong. Right now for today, Sony Pictures’ sequel Ghostrider: Spirit Of Vengeance is opening just pennies away from Universal’s holdover Safe House and Sony Pictures The Vow (in that order). Fox newcomer This Means War is ahead of Warner Bros’ holdover Journey 2. Order by weekend’s end could be same. More later.
