At a reported (California) budget of 41.5M excluding ABL salaries (and producer stuff and the other stuff CA tax credits exclude).

Amazon seemingly have acquired the rights to develop the sequel.

"Seemingly" because Amazon MGM Studios is the company name on the public tax credit application.

Wait, this isn't WB anymore? That's weird.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the sequel was being developed at WB as a potential HBO Max release, but once You Know Who took over the company and saw no value in original movies for the streaming service, and likely no potential for box office either, Affleck negotiated the rights and took it to Amazon/MGM instead of letting it get cancelled.

The move from studio to streamer took place over the course of last summer, during the actors and writers strikes, according to sources. The sequel was a priority during the heady days of the HBO Max era when the studio was developing big-name feature projects intended for its newly launched and very shiny streaming service. Once the David Zaslav era began in 2022, those projects lost their luster.

Affleck, already in business with Amazon with Air, his $90 million Nike movie, decided to give the sequel a second chance at life. Artists Equity, the artist-led production company he founded with Matt Damon, was able to license the sequel rights from Warners for one movie, with the studio ledgering an undisclosed fee. The project was on the California Film Commission list of projects that were awarded tax credits for 2024. Accountant 2 is receiving $10 million in credits.

The Accountant is such a random movie to make a sequel to almost a decade later lmao.

I wonder if they saw how creating a John Wick-like franchise could be lucrative and that influenced this decision.

It could also just be a pet project for Affleck.
