GOLD CRESCENT PICTURES SEEKING BRANDED PLF ROLLOUT FOR THUNDERCATS IN LIEU OF IMAX

 

While the studio’s ThunderCats – shot on large-format film in the Ultra Panavision process – will not be released in IMAX, Gold Crescent is trying a different strategy to challenge the giant-screen dominance of Red Dead Redemption, the film which is expected to be booked on IMAX screens at the time of ThunderCats’ release. Whereas IMAX screens are generally associated with height, Ultra Panavision produces an extremely wide 2.76:1 aspect ratio. During the format’s heyday in the 50s and 60s, it was customary for Ultra Panavision films to be cropped down to the narrower 2.55:1 or 2.35:1 CinemaScope ratios for most showings. Gold Grescent will be taking a page out of that playbook; ThunderCats will be shown in the original CinemaScope widescreen ratio of 2.55:1 in the majority of theatres. That means small black letterboxing bars on the top and bottom of modern “scope” screens in order to fit the extra width, as it was felt that cropping down to 2.40:1 would be too detrimental to the image quality and composition.

 

But the studio is looking to partner directly with exhibitors by offering them the chance to show this movie at its full width only on their non-IMAX premium large format screens. Deals are being sought for showings on a variety of theatre-chain-owned PLF formats. On the list are Showcase XPlus, Regal RPX, Marcus SuperScreen and UltraScreen, Landmark Extra Experience and Xtreme, Harkins Ciné Capri, Bow Tie BTX, B&B Grand Screen, Cinemark XD, Cineplex UltraAVX, and BigD, a holdover brand from former Carmike multiplexes acquired by AMC. All together these formats account for 414 locations in the US and Canada, most with only one of these PLF screens but some with two.

 

How many of these screens Gold Crescent will actually secure is not yet clear and likely won’t be until right before opening weekend, as theatres tend to make booking decisions for their own PLF brands at the last minute. The studio is trying to entice them not only with the promise of an exclusive expanded image, but also by making ThunderCats available in Dolby Atmos but also in the lesser-used DTS:X and Auro 11.1 immersive sound formats; Auro 11.1 is the standard sound format used in Cinemark XD theatres, which represent the largest number of theater-branded PLF screens in North America. The hope is that, because Auro and DTS:X have far less support than Atmos, theatres equipped for them will elect to show ThunderCats in order to show off their sound systems.
