After years of languishing in development hell, Lager Pictures has officially canceled Attack on Titan: The Wings of Freedom, the sequel to Attack on Titan. The news comes as a surprise after earlier reports this year that the long-gestating sequel was being revived, with Academy Award winner Matt Reeves set to return to the director's chair and much of the original cast expected to reprise their roles.

However, recent developments reveal that talks between Reeves and the film's executive producers/Lager Pictures' founders Christopher and María Lager broke down after a long, tumultuous negotiation process. Although the reasons for the breakdown between parties are currently unclear, it is confirmed that Reeves' latest exit was the crux for the Lagers to officially pull the plug on the sequel, a decision that reportedly came with "shock and fiery outrage" among the distributor's upper leadership.

While Y7's Attack on Titan enjoyed immense box office success and largely positive critical reception in its theatrical run, the behind-the-scenes drama between Reeves and the Lagers practically overshadowed the entire production. According to anonymous studio insiders, Reeves' relationship with the Lagers slowly devolved in the years following the immense critical and commercial success of The Odyssey trilogy. Reeves, despite wishing to take an extended break following the awards cycle of Homecoming, was reportedly "smooth-talked" and "thrust" into the director's chair by the Lagers, who were reportedly "gun-ho" on getting the first installment of their next big prospective franchise as soon as possible.  In the end, the film was the studio's only Y7 release and final film until returning from hiatus in January Y10 with Alexandre Aja's folk horror film, Tailypo.

Initially, Reeves was given free creative control on the project, but the Lagers were reportedly displeased with the film's rough cut, mandating a final theatrical runtime under three hours, resulting in roughly thirty to forty minutes of earlier sections in the film being cut from the final picture. Reeves has gone on record multiple times voicing his displeasure with the theatrical cut. "Essentially, almost all of the first half of Act 2 was completely gutted," said Reeves, speaking with Cayommagazine in Y9. "It was a long stretch of the film where the main trio – Eren, Mikasa, Armin - basically train and, y'know, actually bond with the other recruits over a few years. You actually got to see how that all played out. But I was forced to truncate it down to just a few scenes because, of course, the suits wanted to get to the big action sequences quicker. It was not my choice, believe me. If I had it my way, it would, for sure, be much longer, but at the same time, a much, much more emotionally satisfying experience."

Discussions of releasing a director's cut ahead of The Wings of Freedom were thrown around but never solidified. And with news of the sequel's cancellation, the chances of it happening anytime soon are highly unlikely. At this time, Reeves' relationship with the distributor is unknown. Despite this, his production company, 6th & Idaho, is still attached to the Lager's upcoming Found Footage Dinosaur horror film, Troodontid, alongside JJ Abrams' studio, Bad Robot. Troodontid is set for release this June.

In the wake of Titan's cancellation, Lager Pictures has moved up the release date for Hiromasa Yonebayashi's 2D animated Fantasy Thriller, Illumination, to Titan's old date, July 31st.

More to come as new details and developments are announced.

Endless Animation is preparing a date shuffle for two of its upcoming family features. Both The Storyteller and Twenty-One are still in production and chugging along nicely. However, the film in question is actually the sequel: Inspector Gagdet in a World Gone MAD. The issue is less so story as the studio is satisfied with the narrative put together using criticisms from the first to build on the second that has more Gadget and evolves the villain Dr. Claw, who is said to have a pretty funny character arc and moreso done to advance other films in development and to allow more space between itself and the first.

The idea for Y11 that one of the projects in development which is proceeding well is the animated sci-fi comedy, Framework in which in a society of robots, the first artificial intelligence is in fact a human which has been proceeding pretty well with Pixar alumni Brian Larsen (Smash and Grab) directing with a script from him alongside fellow screenwriters in Daniel Chong and Jesse Andrews. There's also the picked-up King of the Elves adaptation which Matilda and the Night Children co-director Everett Downing Jr. is working on as well as a original superhero story from Jorge R. Gutierrez in works but Framework seems like the clear favorite to take the Thanksgiving Y11 spot.

It also a stronger Y12 for Endless Animation financial wise, as for two of the four films it wants to make - the adult-aiming and abstract titles in a romantic musical with music from Kendrick Lamar and hand-drawn sci-fi The Translation Slate slated to be directed by the Scavengers Reign team in Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner and produced by the Wachowskis (the latter are considering writing the script for the movie as well) are covered financially by the family side to follow-ups of Inspector Gadget and The Valkryies vs The Galaxy.

Dave Bautista (Can You Imagine? franchise, Dune: Part One, Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) has signed on to Endless Animation’s Framework as the main protagonist, Code - a scientist robot who creates the first artificial intelligence: a human. Charles Heaton was originally signed on as the role of Code but dropped out due to the role of the character evolving and an older actor was needed to create a better dynamic with the human character (Lakieth Stanfield). Director Brian Larsen (Smash and Grab) viewed for the story, it would fit better if Code was more worn into the system versus a young buck in the science field. Bautista also expressed excitement for this role, contrasting between the nutty sidekick and buxomly mustachioed talking fish Earl of Can You Imagine? to the more reserved, mature and driven Code who is the master of his craft at science forced to understand what he made.

Endless Animation’s Framework is slated for Thanksgiving weekend, Y11 as Inspector Gadget in a World Gone MAD heads to the Easter corridor, Y12.

The cast for Coogler’s untitled Anansi film continue to grow as a plethora of actors join the cast: Tisha Campbell (Martin, House Party), Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn, 12 Years a Slave), Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie, The Wayan Bros, White Chicks), Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Black Panther), Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back, The Best Man), Jharrell Jerome (When They See Us), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Solar Opposites), Kathryn Newton (Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Abigail), with Blue Ivy Carter (Mufasa: The Lion King), and Beyoncé (The Lion King (2019), Dreamgirls) have signed on to the film as it nears production. Endless will be once again reshuffling the slate as it aims for the project to be one of its Y11 features.

Juul Taylor (They Cloned Tyrone, Space Jam: A New Legacy) and Aphton Corbin (Matilda and the Night Children, TwentySomething) have helped Coogler pen the latest script. In other news, Promixty Media and Infinite Studios are also working together to produce a low-budget high-concept comedy from Internet comedy group RDCWorld1 staring the whole crew and Mark Phillips (RDCWorld1 founder) writing and producing.

Endless Animation adds another black-led animated feature to the list, having recently purchased an untitled project from animation legend Bruce W. Smith (Bebe Kids, The Proud Family) and LaToya Raveneau (Final Space, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder). Details are scarce but is said to be an irreverent comedy based on how fashion and style defines us with an unexpected twist. Xavier B. Irving has stated to be very proud of Matilda and the Night Children as well as the Sylvarius series for kickstarting a wave of black leads in CAYOM animation, and is hopeful the characters in this film will be as warmly received as Matilda for audiences as well as a space for black creatives in animation having a range of projects lined up from Aphton Corbin, Ian Jones-Quartery, Everett Downing Jr, and LeSean Thomas in various development stages.
