Infinite Studios has bought a pitch for a horror movie written by Akela Cooper (M3GAN, Malignant) and Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary, the upcoming Bodies of Interest), and directed by Nia DeCosta (Heartman, Candyman) titled Wig Out. The film is said to be a fun horror satire about the relationship between black women and their hair and hair discrimination. The film is being fast tracked for a Y10 release with word has it, looking to replace Crunch Time.

Studio Groundswell has acquired the distribution rights to an independent single-location thriller titled Taco Tuesday. Directed by Real Women Have Curves filmmaker Patricia Cardoso (who today directs episodes for various television shows), the film follows an undocumented teenager (Jenna Ortega) working at a supposedly "hidden-gem" Tex-Mex restaurant; she gets more than she bargained for when her manager (Raúl Castillo) publicizes a "Taco Tuesday" special that goes viral and generates massive crowds, putting stress on her job and even threatening her exposure.

Historic night for Phoenix Fire Pictures

Phoenix Fire Pictures is thrilled and honored in the wake of the Year 9 Academy Award nominations, and would like to thank the voting members of the Academy for the 37 nominations the studio has received - a record-breaking number of nominations for a single studio in one year (the previous record holders being Blankments Productions @Blankments, Hourglass Productions @Ezen Baklattan and Numerator Pictures @4815162342, all of which had 33 nominations in one year - Blankments and Numerator for their Y8 campaigns, and Hourglass for their Y6 campaign; Studio Groundswell @SLAM!'s Y9 campaign matched the 33 nominations number as well).

Phoenix Fire was launched in Y7 with the promise of releasing thought-provoking and enchanting works of cinematic art, and since then the studio has only grown, and we aim to continue to grow and release stronger and stronger works of art. Our growth has been evident since we started: in Y7, Phoenix Fire only had two Oscar nominations - for The Gift of Life, in Best Documentary Feature; and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, in Best Cinematography. That number grew to 12 nominations in Y8 - for the films Eminem-esque, Far Cry, Floodbath, The Lost Empire, Mighty Fall, Returning from Hell and Up in the Sky - and now, the studio more than doubled that previous outing. We are extremely grateful and thankful to everyone who has ever supported us.

We would like to openly congratulate the film cast and crew of our nine films which received Oscar nominations this year. Ava DuVernay's American Spy and Alfonso Cuarón's Warmth led the studio's charge, with eight nominations for each, including Best Picture for both, in what are the studio's first Best Picture nominations. Special congratulations to DuVernay for snatching a Best Director nomination, and also to the ensemble cast of American Spy (Best Ensemble nomination), including double acting nominees Jurnee Smolett and Omar Sy (Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor nominations), as well as its film crew, for the Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing nominations.

In regard to Warmth, congratulations to Cuarón for repeating DuVernay's feat and getting a Best Director nomination; to lead actor Robert Beltran and supporting actor Lee Soon-jae for their Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nominations; to the film crew for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing nominations; and also to composer Jung Jae-il, for composing the Best Original Score-nominated music for Warmth.

No less important, we would love to congratulate the cast and crew of the following films:

  • James Mangold's Runaway Train, nominated in five categories: Best Director (Mangold), Best Ensemble, Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix), Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Song (Make You Care);
  • Christopher McQuarrie's Rocket Hero, nominated in four categories: Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects and Best Use of Action;
  • Jake Hammond's Acne, nominated in three categories: Best Actress (Annalise Basso), Best Original Screenplay and Best Makeup & Hairstyling;
  • Owen Dennis' Invader Zim, nominated in three categories: Best Animated Feature, Best Voice Actor/Actress in a Leading Role (Bill Hader) and Best Original Song (Fun, Fun, Fun);
  • Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman and Gianluigi Toccafondo's Vixen and the Castle of Doom, nominated in three categories: Best Animated Feature, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score (Lisa Gerrard and Hans Zimmer);
  • Tom McCarthy's The Next Good Day, nominated in two categories: Best Actor (Devin Druid) and Best Supporting Actress (Kirsten Dunst);
  • and Lyric Cabral's War on Drugs: America's Modern Conflict, nominated in one category: Best Documentary Feature.

Phoenix Fire would also like to congratulate the remaining studios recipient of nominations - Studio Groundswell, Numerator Pictures, Endless Entertainment @YM! and Good Movies Studio @lamamama - and wishes them the best of luck for the upcoming years.

As for special announcements during the Academy Awards cerimony, while we can't promise anything, it is likely that we'll deliver the very first look at next year's Cloud Cuckoo Land, directed by Ridley Scott, an ambitious, large-reaching project that ventures into yet unseen storytelling devices in CAYOM.

Studio Groundswell is ready to announce casting changes to James Wan’s sci-of thriller Providence. Paul Mescal and Taylor Russell, the lead actor and actress respectively, both had scheduling conflicts with the upcoming Tron: Firebrand, so Dylan O’Brien will play the lead while Kiersey Clemons replaces Russell. Jack O’Connell will then step in for the supporting role vacated by O’Brien’s promotion. Vera Farmiga is still attached.

BREAKING NEWS

Cayom Magazine has published this in error.

Paul Mescal will in fact be staying as the lead in Providence, with Dylan O’Brien playing the supporting role. Taylor Russell still won’t return however, because of a mutual decision that she’s not quite right for the role, meaning Kiersey Clemons stays as her replacement.

Studio Groundswell Release Date Shakeups

- Sources have informed the writers of The Shell, the one about zombies attacking people at an oyster roast, that oyster season is actually winter rather than Summer, so Groundswell has taken that film off of its release schedule until further notice, so that they can reproach its filming as well as where to put it on the calendar.

The Unthinkable, the one about the child kidnapping, will likely not be produced because the executives do not want to risk exploiting that real-life situation.

Taco Tuesday has been dated for September 18th in observance of Hispanic Heritage Month.

- Studio Groundswell is proud to announce Roxie, a live-action/animation hybrid film for family audiences as well as people who like action movies. Kathryn Newton stars as what the studio describes as a "punk-rock version of Tinker Bell," and the film tasks her with gathering together a hodgepodge of "freaks, geeks, and outcasts" to save the 'sacred tree' in which they call home. The film releases in IMAX on May 22nd. Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey) is attached as the director.

Cayom Magazine Release Date Shakeups

- Roxie will now release without IMAX on August 14th, Y10.

- Studio Groundswell will release an adaptation of a novel called The Shadow Glass (from Attack the Block director Joe Cornish) on May 15th, Y10. The story follows the son of a deceased filmmaker who made a puppet fantasy film (i.e. Dark Crystal) during the 80s, with the film’s adventure kickstarting after the puppets come to life. Daniel Radcliffe stars as the son while Emilia Clarke voices one of the puppets.

Endless Animation has decided to work with British stop-motion pioneers at Aardman Animation for a new feature film for Y11 as one of the studios’ two family films alongside The Gadgets in a MAD World. Nick Park (Wallace and Gromit) will write and direct the picture. Details are mum for now but word has it, Park is using one of Endless Animation’s old scripts for a murder-mystery.

RIP Lance Reddick. He was not only a CAYOM and movie superstar, but he was a father, a husband and a great human being. We at Endless Entertainment express our deepest condolences.

Lager Pictures has tapped filmmaking/screenwriting duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, 65, Haunt) to write and direct a feature film adaptation of the popular Reddit horror series, Search and Rescue Woods, written by Kerry Hammond. Hammond is also on board to co-write the script with Beck/Woods. Additionally, Sam Raimi is attached as a producer, with Academy Award nominee Alden Ehrenreich and Academy Award winners Sasha Lane and Laura Dern currently in talks to star in the project.

The original series, published in eight parts on the Reddit subforum r/NoSleep from August to December 2015, follows a young SAR officer working in a national forest who recalls strange stories of their time on the job, from supernatural occurrences and unexplained disappearances to reoccurring encounters with mysterious staircases in the middle of the woods.

Previously, a television adaptation based on ideas from the series was included in the third season of the horror anthology series Channel Zero under the title “Butcher’s Block”. However, some fans of the Reddit series were disappointed in how little the adaptation resembled the original story.

The horror feature, entitled SAR (short for Search and Rescue), is slated for release sometime in the Summer of Y11. The project joins the likes of Borrasca, Tulpa, Flower Eyes and Needle Teeth, and Little Black Bugs as another big-screen adaptation of a notable Creepypasta from Lager Pictures. Two other Creepypasta adaptations, Penpal and I Dared My Best Friend to Ruin My Life, are both slated for release in Y10.

An executive of Studio Groundswell has issued a statement regarding recent news about actor Jonathan Majors.

Spoiler

"As someone who's worked with Majors on many projects including Carver and Christie Monteiro, I won't be the first to tell you that I am extremely disappointed in Majors' behavior. Here at Studio Groundswell, we have no place for people who enjoy domestic abuse.

After some phone calls, we're now ready to confirm that Jonathan Majors will no longer be playing Richard in our Devil Bean franchise. We are filling the role of Richard with Cocaine Bear actor O'Shea Jackson Jr., who, let's be honest, acts in a lot more comedies anyway. We're looking forward to working with O'Shea Jackson Jr. on Devil Bean II: Revenge of the Bean, which releases in Y11."
