A small set of shifts from Phoenix Fire:

The Quest for Buster's Bones has been transferred from June 8 Y10 to September 11 of the same year, and is now in the hands of Phoenix Fire Artstyles, the more alternative Phoenix Fire animation studio. Buster's Bones is directed by Steve Moore (producer and writer on Open Season and Alpha and Omega) and stars Ving Rhames and Andy Richter.

Taking the June 8 slot from PF Family Animation is Dualheart, directed by Lauren Faust (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Medusa) and Steven Clay Hunter (Out). It stars Jenna Ortega and tells the story of the seven Rainbow Guardians - specifically, Beckee, the Blue Guardian, who finds out that she can actually wield the powers of Blue and Pink as well, and struggles with the information, going on a quest to figure out what to do.

Fresh off the heels of the success of Romance Road and Revenge Ex, Infinite Studios greenlight another romantic comedy from Will Gluck, this time getting in on the anime craze with popular anime series, Don’t Mess With Me, Miss Nagatoro. Details are scarce if it is an animated movie or a live action adaptation but rumbling of the latter said it would take on a style that pays homage to the anime. Nagatoro is scheduled for sometime in the Fall for Y11.

Endless Animation reels up two big projects for the upcoming years:

  • Acclaimed director, Guillermo del Toro returns to realm of animation to direct an adaptation of Moby Dick. The film will join the line up of Endless Animation’s adult oriented feature films alongside Sleepy Hollow last year, and this year’s Rust and Twenty-One. Moby Dick is estimated to have an 100m budget and is said to be done entirely in stop motion. Moby Dick is set to sail sometime Y11.
  • Fresh off her Oscar win as first black director to win an Academy Award in animation and box office success for Matilda and the Night Children, Aphton Corbin has gotten the greenlight for her second project: The Storyteller. The Storyteller will use Worldmeander techniques and tells the story of a peculiar young girl who has the uncanny ability to bring stories to life, and is said to analyze the impact stories and myths have on the community. Storyteller is slated for a Y12 release.
  • Brian Larsen’s Framework is still alive and is heading for a Summer Y11 release date. King of the Elves based on the Phillip K. Dick story and cancelled Disney adaptation is slated to be in development too with Everett Downing Jr (Hair Love, director of Matilda and the Night Children) taking the reigns.

Production is in the process for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Hanna Barbera biopic; Yabba-Dabba-Doo!. A plot summary and full cast reveal will be shown at the end of the month when production is expected to end. The film will center around the rise and creation of the Hanna-Barbera animation studio in the 1960s-70s, as the two artists strive to both run one of the biggest brands in Hollywood animation and how that affected the industry as a whole.

James Mangold (Runaway Train, Logan) will produce the film rather than direct it as Ben Affleck (Argo, Air) has stepped up to the role of director. Yabba-Dabba-Doo! will be distributed under the Infinite Studios banner at Endless Entertainment and opens November 20th, just five days before Endless Animation’s family musical Allegra set in the 1950s but Endless Entertainment owner and head Xavier B. Irving think both will co-exist just fine due to the two different demographics. Irving thinks the combination of Green Lantern Corps: Evolution, Allegra and Yabba-Dabba-Doo! will prove fruitful for Endless’ Holiday Y10 lineup.

Who's up for another "I've become inhuman and must be human again" story? Xolo Maridueña (Blue BeetleCleopatra in Space) will star in an original animated film for Studio Groundswell titled Pinched, where the timid college-aged Hector goes on a beach trip, gets a sunburn, goes swimming to cool off, finds himself turned into a crab, and goes on an underwater adventure to defend a crab community from predators and discover how to live confidently and freely. Joel Crawford (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) will direct. The film will be fast-tracked for a Summer Y10 release.

In a surprising development, Studio Groundswell is looking to vacate its IMAX slot for The Needles of Haystack County. Groundswell invites other studios to take or trade the date. If Groundswell ends up keeping the date then it will replace Haystack County with another IMAX release. Reasons include creative conflict between the storylines and themes of Pinched and Haystack County, as well as the planned release of Endless Animation's animated western Rust—with these complications, Haystack County is currently sandwiched between two films that it's similar to, which could harm the box office of all three films. Groundswell remains committed to maintaining a cooperative relationship with other studios and believes they will find a creative solution to the predicament. Developing...

A logline has also dropped: “After the events of Green Lantern Corps: Home, ruler of Korugar and former Green Lantern, Sinestro (Joaquin Phoenix) has been building his Yellow Lantern army with the intent to rule the universe under his image. But first, he must convince his Green Lantern brethren to see the errors of their ways and destroy the Guardians, partnering with the primordial entity of fear Parallax (Tony Todd) to wage war on the Green Lantern Corps.

With their Corps diminished and in hiding, most of the Guardians wiped out, and their battery running low, veteran Green Lantern John Stewart (Sterling K. Brown) recruits a disheveled Hal Jordan (Sam Heughan), drill sergeant Kilowag (Kevin Michael Richardson), Earth scientist Carol Ferris (Alison Brie), and Arisia Rrab (Naomi Scott) on a will-testing odyssey across the cosmos to find the entity of willpower Ion to stop Parallax’s ambitions of consuming the universe. However, if they want to find Ion, the Green Lanterns must not only face their inner fears but what it means to be a Green Lantern.”

A couple of shake-ups from Phoenix Fire Pictures:

  • Soil, which was slated for a limited opening on July 17 and expanding nationwide throughout August, has now been moved to the beginning of November;
  • Thou Shall Not Commit Adultery, in the wake of Soil's release change, and due to colliding artistic aspirations with other films in the same year (namely Soil and A Walk in the London Rain), has been postponed to another year. Debra Granik is also no longer slated to direct Adultery, getting instead the reigns to the eventual Shirley Jackson adaptation The Lottery;
  • Dualheart, the Phoenix Fire Family Animation film originally slated for June, has also been postponed. It will be replaced by a TBA PFFA film.

Endless Animation is currently fast-tracking an adaptation of Milestone Media/DC’s Icon and Rocket. Endless Animation has had success with the Squirrel Girl franchise and the parent company Endless Entertainment has made strides with their DC films including Static. Irving expresses excitement for this, noting how well the mediums of animation and comic books intersect, citing the Spider-Verse series as an example and want to make something of similar scale to bring those characters to life. Who will direct the project? Kemp Powers (Soul, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) and Ian Jones-Quartery (OK KO: Let’s Be Heroes, Steven Universe, writer and co-director of Matilda and the Night Children) are both in the runnings to direct the project. As for rating? The studio aims for a hard or firm PG akin to the SpiderVerse movies but even a light PG-13 isn’t out of the question. The studio has also been kicking around the idea of a Blood Sydnicate movie which would be apart of the adult animation lineup of Rust, Twenty-One and last year’s Sleepy Hollow.
