4.003 THEATERS

It can go single digits. Still this year, the record for worst 4,000+ theater release opener got broken three times.

New Line's Annabelle: Creation is scaring up a strong business in its box-office debut for a projected domestic launch in the $36 million-$39 million range, according to early Friday returns.

The origin film, directed by David F. Sandberg, is the fourth installment in the studio's Conjuringhorror franchise. It's pacing to gross as much as $17 million from 3,502 theaters on Friday, including a strong $4 million in Thursday previews.

For Annabelle Creation to be around the same number as the first film give or take is impressive. WB now has three summer hits, maybe four if you include Everything Everything which has made five times its budget WW so far.

So in the same range as the last one. Pretty good all things considered and it should have no problem outgrossing it domestically.

Really happy that Annabelle is doing great numbers so far. Since 2015, the horror genre has had a rennaissance both in terms of quality and box office. After the dead zone that were the 2000s for me, thats great to see

Warner Animation needs to up their game, they may be doing better than Sony/Paramount but they need solid international and domestic footing.

They're doing solidly considering they've only released three films. I'd like to see an original film like Smallfoot break out but I suspect Scooby will be the first non Lego film to be a hit.

Think Inhumans has IMAX during its first weekend although maybe a week's run in its second weekend is possible

I'm expecting Inhumans to BOMB. In the words of Homer Simpson why pay for something you can see on TV for free (especially when it looks flat out terrible).

Venice premiere dates for some films (TIFF still hasn't released their schedule yet):

Downsizing: August 30 (opens the festival)

Shape of Water: August 31

Lean on Pete: September 1

Suburbicon: September 2

The Leisure Seeker: September 3

Victoria and Abdul: September 3

Three Billboards: September 4

mother!: September 5

mother!'s embargo will lift 10 days before release. Given WB's history, It's embargo should be lifted before then, so mother! will have room to let reviews spread.
