It was strongly crafted in story structure with setup and payoff, the characters were very relatable, you spaced out exposition to prevent giant dumps that stall plot movement (though there was a bunch). The action scenes were spaced out enough to avoid overload, though maybe one could be dropped. The actors were well chosen for their roles.

For a good chunk of the way it felt pretty similar to The Perfect Storm, but then things kinda went too melodramatic. Also Christoph Waltz was a bit too cartoonish in his evil.

Existing halfway between the Disney animated offering and the tone of the source novel makes the feel of the film a little bit of an odd duck, but it's a moving piece of work nonetheless.
