No, China need Hollywood. The theatre chains need HLW, the audience need HLW.

Of course theatre chains need Hollywood to re-finance their new digital theatres. Overall, China doesn't need those few billions they could earn with Hollywood movies. Give me a break. Your administration will watch the situation. If they come to the conclusion "enough of this Hollywood/western lifestyle influence" they will throw out foreign movies very fast and close the markets again.

That would be a big blow if big tentpoles makes 200-300 mill in 5-10 years time and that happens

Look at France. They also protect their markets. They created an own movie industry. And it works. French movies make amazing numbers. China has so much creative potential they can easily substitute Hollywood if they want.Seems the China movie industry just doesn't know there to go right now. Don't know.

To keep the thousands theatres run, the government would have to allow more HLW movies released in China. Otherwise, theatres will be closed and many people wil lost their jobs. What are you gonna do with those people ? You gotta creat new jobs for them. At this point, ensuring social stability is the most important for the government.Jobs means money and better life for people. And its much bigger deal than the so-called ideologies. Things changed.

Come on, do you actually believe those few jobs at movie theatres matter? Even if it's a few thousand jobs, it doesn't matter. China has to find solutions for hundreds of millions of people and not just for a few folks that work at a movie theatre. With something like +200 million admissions the China movie market is more or less non-existent compared to western standards. Right now, it's not even a blimp on the radar screen for your administration.

You think its only "few" / "a few thousand jobs" ? NO.

There are 1,600+ theatres now in China and the number will reach 10,000 in less than 10 years. that will directly creat Hundreds of thousands jobs. And it will be millions of you count investments, real estate, advertising, etc. behind that. Moreover, the local movie industry will also benefit from the rapidly growing box office, thanks to the stimulation of Hollywood movies. We are talking about millions of jobs. No government will see that as "non-existent".

Not even in the USA the movie industry creates "millions of jobs". And they are the worldwide market leaders.

Not even in the USA the movie industry creates "millions of jobs". And they are the worldwide market leaders.

"The industry is a major private sector employer, supporting 2.2 million jobs, and nearly $137 billion in total wages in 2009: Direct industry jobs generated $40.5 billion in wages, and an average salary 26% higher than the national average: o There were nearly 272,000 jobs in the core business of producing, marketing, manufacturing, and distributing motion pictures and television shows. These are high quality jobs, with an average salary of nearly $79,000, 73% higher than the average salary nationwide. o Additionally, there were over 430,000 jobs in related businesses that distribute motion pictures and television shows to consumers. Industry also supports indirect jobs and wages in thousands of companies with which it does business, such as caterers, dry cleaners, florists, hardware and lumber suppliers, and jobs in other companies doing business with consumers, such as video retailers, theme parks and tourist attractions."
