cookie
July 6-8: ‘Ultraman’ Wins Independence Day But ‘Moon’ Soars on Weekend In part because the Micheal Bay picture “Ultraman” launched on 4th of July (a Wednesday) as opposed to the following Friday it came second over the weekend after the Pete Docter picture “To the Moon”, but both movies ended up having solid debuts. “Moon” became the third animated feature in a row to debut to over $50 million and “Ultraman” scored nearly $80 million over five days. Helped by both films scoring positive reviews (to varying degrees) and the utter wasteland analysts expect the rest of July to be both films should have good holds relative to their genre. Audience favorites like “The Odyssey”, “Road to El Dorado”, “Bounty Hamster” and “Lord of the Flies” continued their strong runs while “Paddles” had an okay debut in 8 theaters. To the Moon - $50,693,176 Ultraman - $47,889,144 / $79,077,185 The Odyssey: The Spoils of War - $18,166,383 (-43.3%) Fab 5 - $15,110,681 (-50.0%) Lord of the Flies - $10,091,652 (-25.4%) The Simulation - $5,330,972 (-47.1%) The Road to El Dorado - $3,493,446 (-42.1%) Bounty Hamster - $2,668,194 (-48.3%) Damnation Alley - $1,557,185 (-51.8%) Rise of the Dead - $1,485,793 (-58.2%) Paddles: The Video Game Story - $311,648 Top 10: $158,043,811 (+45.3%) July 13-15 ‘Moon’ Shines On, ‘Names’ Solid in Second “To the Moon” led a second week while the action comedy “Taking Names” had a solid debut. Dropping just thirty percent, “Moon” is looking to have a very exciting run ahead of it. “Names” took advantage of the lack of comedy this summer and being much better received than “Fab 5” it should also hold fairly strong. The horror film “The Film” had a decent debut with $16 million. Horror movies in general have been fairly weak so far this summer, but with low competition on the horizon “Film” could hold better than expected. To the Moon - $34,775,084 (-31.4%) Taking Names - $27,115,679 Ultraman - $23,846,104 (-50.2%) The Film - $16,650,522 The Odyssey: The Spoils of War - $11,332,239 (-37.6%) Fab 5 - $8,710,544 (-42.4%) Lord of the Flies - $7,770,492 (-23.0%) The Simulation - $2,912,581 (-45.4%) The Road to El Dorado - $2,478,660 (-29.0%) Bounty Hamster - $1,923,681 (-27.9%) Paddles: The Video Game Story - $1,155,440 (+270.8%) Top 10 gross: $137,515,586 (-13.0%) July 20-22: ‘Mermaid’ Loses to ‘Moon’ in Weak Mid-July Bout “The Mermaid” debuted to $14 million, a not too bad result on its own but it came in third over a rather quiet mid-July frame. With the exciting blockbusters not returning before August, audiences went for “To the Moon” for a third time. “Paddles” continued expanding in the lower ranks. To the Moon - $25,301,592 (-27.2%) Taking Names - $15,118,677 (-44.2%) The Mermaid - $14,579,422 Ultraman - $13,122,062 (-45.0%) The Film - $9,346,792 (-43.9%) The Odyssey: The Spoils of War - $7,464,519 (-34.1%) Lord of the Flies - $5,267,159 (-32.2%) Fab 5 - $3,909,818 (-55.1%) Paddles: The Video Game Story - $2,355,339 (+103.8%) The Road to El Dorado - $1,702,581 (-31.3%) Top 10 gross: $98,167,961 (-28.6%) July 27-29: ‘Victorian’ Number One but Closes July on a Weak Note The Tim Burton horror romance “The Dark Victorian” took the top spot over the weekend but missed $20 million, making this the first time since all the way back in January that the top film grossed under $20 million. That should speak to the consistent strength of this year but also to just how weak the post-Independence Day July release slate has been. With terrible reviews and a “C” cinemascore, expect this one to not stay around for long. With “War of the Gods” and “Pokémon” just on the horizon the box office is expected to come roaring back at the dawn of August, but for now the summer moviegoing scene is surprisingly quiet. The Dark Victorian - $18,776,305 To the Moon - $17,544,781 (-30.7%) Taking Names - $9,682,294 (-35.9%) The Mermaid - $8,222,563 (-43.6%) Ultraman - $7,533,395 (-42.6%) The Odyssey: The Spoils of War - $5,001,239 (-33.0%) The Film - $4,977,205 (-46.7%) Paddles: The Video Game Story - $4,805,782 (+104.0%) Lord of the Flies - $3,896,155 (-24.3%) Fab 5 - $2,807,725 (-28.1%) Top 10 gross: $83,247,175 (-15.2%) Edited January 23, 2018 by cookie
YM!
Hope Crash Bandicoot does a solid run. It’s the first PG animated movie since Bounty Hamster. Also solid but expected for To The Moon and Ultraman. Edited January 23, 2018 by YourMother the Edgelord
Xillix
As expected a huge completely unrealistic run for To the Moon. Congrats to the all-consuming July Galactus.

Ezen Baklattan
The Odyssey is definitely performing just as Spark: Rising did. $350m isn't out of the cards.

Not entirely sure about that one but crazier things have happened I suppose. Spoiler I'm betting War of the Gods will definitely take away a lot of the audience for the film. A final gross around $335 mil or $340 mil wouldn't surprise me.

Rorschach
I can't see Pokemon NOT having a good opening weekend. Having a frontloaded opening and then the box office dissipating from there now I can see that. Pokemon may not be as popular as it used to be but most people still know what it is. Whether you like or not, under $50 million TOTAL is just crazy.

That said I think it's dubious whether a... *inhales deeply*... live-action adaptation of the first third of a 22-year-old game which barely had a story but that's already had a never-ending cartoon you can watch for free on TV or Netflix and a long series of animated films which burnt out their box office potential so badly in the US that they now only get Fathom Event screenings over here... can be a major blockbuster. IMO even The Last Airbender numbers would be a stretch, but hey, I'm not the one doing the actuals! And as is frequently pointed out most of the adaptations we do here haven't REALLY been done for a reason, so some leeway is expected.
