Finally saw this and I loved it so much. Really regret not watching it in cinemas 😔

Ready Player One is Spielberg going absolutely insane. His gamer-culture remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is moronic yet ridiculously fun. His setpiece designing is still at the top of his game, although the source material’s love of unmotivated references prevents any of them from establishing a strong identity. The cast is fine but with the exception of Pegg and Mendelssohn, none of them can overcome the horrendous script. A white male geek fantasy, the main character is designed to be generic in his disgustingness, living in a hellish VR world designed by a madman with no real understanding what living is. You get the feeling Spielberg has some level of contempt for what he’s making, but he’s unable to truly deconstruct it with Cline still penning the script. Silvestri’s score is solid and the animation works well for the type of movie. Ready Player One is an ugly mess but that doesn’t stop it from being a remarkably entertaining film. C+
